I know you've probably thought long and hard about this, but would it be possible to construct some sort of forearm brace with a pick attached at the end? Something that would let you attack the strings without putting strain on your thumb?
Tried it Wil.... even spent £40 on a physio brace designed for the particular injury. Helped a little but still f-ing painful.
Any chance of taking up another instrument, TB? Guitar (lighter grip). Trumpet? It would break my heart not to play something. Even just songwriting/arranging/composing (ie not playing gigs but noddling around with Cubase/Sibelius etc).
I'm keeping a 6 string and my old Westone for noodling with recording. Also, going to do some recording for other bands, so definately keeping a foot in the door so to speak.
Ouch. That's awful. You have my sympathies. A friend of mine also gave up bass due to arthritis in her 20s. Nice rig. I hope you get lots of interest.
Thanks mate. Injury happened over 15 years ago. CNS rupture to my right ulnar co-lateral ligament or 'Goalkeeper's thumb' as it is known. Basically, if I pick play or anchor my thumb for finger style the whole hand swells up and goes numb. I was told that surgery to correct it wouldn't make any difference, due to the age of the injury... indded, it might be worse afterwards.

Due to a chronic hand injury I have to face up to the fact that I cannot continue to play without suffering pain and extreme discomfort. Darkest day of my life so far!! Therefore, everything is up for grabs. In this thread: My beloved Sandberg California PM4 Custom Union Jack Bass - 'Dear Old Blighty' I had this custom ordered and made in November 2008 by Sandberg through Darren at The Bass Merchant in Colchester. This honestly looks like it has been through 20 years of stadium tours but all the relic-ing is top quality. The finish is sublime, with a 'flag ripple' running through the colour. Very light... about 8.5 - 9lbs. Sold with a Gewa (Sandberg stock) gig bag. The pictures do not do this bass justice!! Fans of the 'heavy relic' look will fall in love with this. Cost was £1750 rrp with a little knocked off by Darren for goodwill. Henrik at Sandberg told me that this is a one off.... there is another custom model which is similar, but with different specs and that went to a collector in Sweden Basschat offer £900.00 plus delivery I have moved the Markbass rig to the proper section in order to give it more exposure.

Absolutely speechless! Although this place is essentially an online community you get the feeling that everyone has lost a true friend. This news really puts things into perspective and personally shows me what is truly important. RIP Si.... My thoughts go out to your firends and family.

Yep.... nitrose finish with some lovely crackling coming through as well. The specials were a run that Fender did between '79 and '82 which featured all gold hardware, high class nitrose finish and an active pre-amp. The bass also featured an upgraded bridge with is much more substantial that the traditional Fender bridge.

My new band do a lot of songs that require a 5 string bass so I need one pretty sharpish... Up for trade is my 1981 Fender Precision Special finished in Metallic Candy Apple Red (almost burgundy). Lots of natural mojo in this. Beedster was the previous owner and replaced the pup with an active Basslines one and put on a black scratchplate. Plays beautifully, with a huge P sound. Gold hardware.... I also have the original pup cover and brass thumbrest, which I will include. Comes with a Fender gigbag. Saleprice is £800.00 + courier. Trade wise, I'm looking for a 'traditional' looking 5 string, ie: Precision, Jazz, 'Ray etc. Nothing pointy or hair metal please as I have none!! Please PM me with what you have. Based in Brandon, Suffolk.

You should really go through the point of purchase. If that's not possible (second hand for example) then contact your nearest MB dealer. Area sales manager's details are available on the Proel website, but they mainly deal with dealers and retail outlets directly. Pete Ward is the man you need to speak to if nothing else can be done as he is the manager for your area. All contact details are in the link.

Martin recently bought my HK Audio PA system from me. Drove all the way from Brizzle to Suffolk to pick it up. I think it helps being a university lecturer when faced with the immense task of fitting the whole system into a car the size of a shoe box, but between us we figured it out!! Lovely guy who told me to move to the west country before I sell him anything else!! Thanks again mate.

Top trade the other week. Really pleasant guy to deal with and hopefully both parties extremely happy with their new toys. Good luck with all them knobs!!!
