Preface: This is mainly a rant to vent my frustration, but it is something I'm starting to consider. I have been in Oxford for 18 months doing my PhD (mostly), and in that time I have only met two people who I would consider doing any proper band stuff with (one of whom is my girlfriend). I have even tried looking for bands/musicians out towards Reading and Slough, with no luck. The music scene in Oxford is completely dead unless you are a thrash metal band or are considered 'alternative' (read that as teenage indie), which is fine if you like that, but I don't. I do get some emails from people who seem interested, but they either lose interest or flake out when I try to sort anything out that doesn't involve getting smashed in a pub... I am getting increasingly despondent about it and starting to wonder whether I should just give up on it for the moment. I don't even think I'm being that picky about genres...the only things I don't want to play are metal (been there done that), indie (hate it) and punk (not a fan). TL;DR version - People suck rant over, thanks for listening.

Hey all, I have a 4U rack case (not sure on make, possibly DAP, stock pic below) and I'm looking to downsize to a 2U case, to save space and weight when storing my Landmark 300. The case looks just like this (just with a tiny bit of wear). Apologies for the stock photo, but I'm not in the same location as the case to take a pic of it at the moment. I can also throw in my behringer rack tuner along with the case, cos it is now surplus to requirements. I will be back at my mum's (where the case is) on friday, so I can get pics and measurements if people need Thanks

4 or 8 Ohms...WIll I be able to hear the difference?
jackers replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
cheers guys some very helpful stuff here. The main reason for the question about the 410/210 option is because my car won't fit 2 410s in it without some serious tetris-ing I am currently tempted by an ampeg 410he and 210av pair, or maybe the tech 21 B410 in the for sale section to go with my Landmark head. Anyone got experience with the 410he paired with a 210av? -
"Rock of Ages": Genius or Cheesy Rubbish
jackers replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
rock of ages is cheese, plain and simple, but it is enjoyable. I've heard quite a few people I know say that Les Mis is a fantastic film, and that Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are brilliant in it. Musicals in film form aren't my cup of tea really (other than The Muppets ones haha), but I can appreciate that some are very well done. -

4 or 8 Ohms...WIll I be able to hear the difference?
jackers replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ok, so if I go for an 8 Ohm cab I would like it to be a 410 or 210 I reckon. If I get a 410, would adding a 210 from the same manufacturer as a second cab be a good idea? or should I just go with 2 of the same cab. -

isn't that a blatant breaking of ebay rules? surely you aren't allowed to post an auction then openly ask people to PM you offers for a cash on collection sale? -
Bass Direct cant be too far from Oxford
It's not too far, but without a car it's a pain to get to and I have been into the music box a couple of times, nice place. I shall have a visit at some point soon to see what is around. -
I really like the Sennheiser in ear headphones but they do break all the time. I just bought some of these off of Groupon. They're pretty nice, ot my ear don't sound quite as good but there's not a lot in it and much more robust.
I did some research and found prices for these online of between 4 and 10 quid, so the groupon deal seems a bit off. But if they sounds good then that's the important thing
That's a common problem unfortunately...
Yea, I've noticed My gf is very supportive of my bass playing addiction, but she nearly had a heart attack when I showed her how much the BF and Berg stuff cost and tbh, I can see where see is coming from. When I have to pay rent, bills, council tax and buy food, having somewhere in the region of £1k of bass cab sat around getting 1 use a week seems a bit silly :S (a bit OT, but oh well ) EDIT: cheers Liam, I always forget about the GK MBE stuff. I've heard mixed things about it but for £200 it could be a good entry solution. -
The Ampegs are around 50kg too... and twice the price! Take your point about the weight though.
the HLF is 38.5kg and the HE is 41kg, which are a bit lighter, but still weighty you are right. The problem I am having is that the stuff I know sounds nice and can afford (second hand) is pretty heavy, but the lighter stuff is alot more expensive, and it is very difficult for me to get anywhere to try it out. -
is it me, or does the E-string almost completely miss the fingerboard??

4 or 8 Ohms...WIll I be able to hear the difference?
jackers replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
thanks for the replies so far. I knew alot of it would depend on the specific cabs etc, but I don't really know much about these things I was just worried that 200W at 8 Ohms might be a bad starting point for a gigging rig, that's all. and conan, I would love one of those, but I have problems with my elbows and knees, (dislocated all 4 at various points in my life), so anything over about 40-45kg is way out of what I can comfortably lift. I have had my eye on either the Ampeg 410HLF or 410HE for a while now, but I'm not entirely sure what the difference is (other than impedance). -
Hey all, I've been without a bass cab for about 6 months now (haven't had a need for one), but I'm starting to get some band auditions, so I've been thinking about my options for cabs. I would ideally like a single cab solution, (410 or maybe 212), as the smaller modular rigs I have had so far have not impressed me. I have a Tech 21 Landmark 300 head, which I absolutely love. It has a great tone and is everything I need in one box. It is rated at 300W at 4 Ohms and 200W and 8 Ohms. (From what I have read, it is a loud 300W.) Obviously, my first thought was to get a 4 Ohm cab, but my choices seem to be quite limited. The Ampeg SVT410HLF is the main contender I have found (or maybe the berg 610/Barefaced S12 if I really save up). Then I started wondering about just how much the perceived volume would change if I just hooked up a single 8 Ohm 410 to my Landmark. I know almost nothing about this kind of thing, so I was wondering if anyone here could help/advise me. Cheers

precisions. simple. jazzes and stingrays get an honourable mention too

I position my basses (P and J) so that the top of the top horn is between 1/2 and 1 inch below my belly button. This gives me a very comfortable wrist angle on both my wrists (I play fingerstyle exclusively now, when I played with a pick the bass was lower).
Dragonforce's latest album. There's a few really nice fills and solo sections from Fred on there, they've finally learnt that the bass channel fader goes up as well as down... 2:56ish, nothing too difficult, but it just works. I used to hate all of their singles, but they've really hit it out of the ballpark with The Power Within. If you watch Episode 3 of their making of videos, it shows how insane Vadim is on the keys as well. Liam
I liked that. Very tasteful compared to their previous offerings. I will have to give the whole album a listen.

Hey all, My brother is also selling his Yamaha Pacifica along with a Peavey Rage 158 practice amp. The Pacifica is about 10 years old and has a few marks, (pictured below), but is in good condition and plays well. The amp works perfectly and sounds very nice. He would like £75 for the pair, but is open to offers. The guitar and amp are located in Faringdon for collection only, as there is no hard case for the guitar. Feel free to PM me with any questions

Hey all, My brother is selling his Epiphone Explorer and has asked me to list it on here. It is about 6 years old and he has owned it from new and taken very good care of it. There are no marks and scratches, and it plays really nicely. He would like £200 for the guitar, but is open to offers. He also has a hard case that he bought for the guitar that can be provided with it for an extra £25. The guitar and case are located in Faringdon, and if the guitar and case are bought together, they can be shipped at an additional cost (around £10-15 I imagine). Any questions, feel free to PM me
