I have invested plenty but would still expect to be told not to use my full rig for gigs where it's not required, if someone is using the wrong gear for the gig when they have other options ie their smaller amp I see no problem in telling them?
This is exactly what I would expect too. I have 2 cabs, but I would never just assume I could turn up at the venue and announce that I am going to be using both.

How has your day been as a bassist?
jackers replied to charliethornton's topic in General Discussion
it has been a great day played for 3 hours and taught myself several Coheed and Cambria songs, they are so much fun to play -
haha, that thought did cross my mind would have broken my back though, lol. They did tell me they had been through 5 bass players in 6 months, saying they were all crap and tried to control them too much, though I'm now getting a slightly different picture. and thanks bassintheface, that is a great article I may have just emailed it to one of the guitarists....

I would have loved to have taken the drummer and vocalist with me, but unfortunately the drummer has been playing with them for 5 years and won't leave, and the singer seems to look up to the guitarists and is really eager to please them.

thanks guys all the replies here confirm what I was thinking. I think I'm going to steer clear of 'classic rock n roll' type bands, as they seem to have the highest concentration of moron guitarists

wow, that is alot of replies haha. I will do my best to answer everything. I have considered my options and have decided to call time on this band, I just can't get past the way they acted last night, and it's only going to get worse IMO. The problem didn't come up in rehearsals, as they only use 1 4x12 each and the drummer hits hard. While I would have loved to have been able to have things like dress rehearsals etc there just wasn't time. The first gig was 11 days after me and the singer joined (it was pre-arranged obviously), and we had to spend our time getting the songs tight. I definitely agree with the nice tones coming from smaller amps. The best guitar sound (to my ears) I've ever heard at a gig came from a miced fender hot rod combo that the guitarist in my last band had. I have spoken to them this morning and politely but firmly explained to them what I think about their attitude and rigs, and that it is not going to be worth my time, effort and petrol to keep playing with them. They said some rude things back to me, and that was that. Definitely made the right choice Time to form my own band I think.

Mr. Drums is very passive and doesn't really like to get involved he says. and Mr. Vox joined around the same time as me (about 2 weeks ago), so he doesn't want to make a fuss incase they kick him out :S
Heya, thanks for the response . I get the tonal options thing, it's just, I don't know, it seems an awfully complicated line. I guess I just don't understand, if the pre of an amp wasn't doing what I wanted tonally I wouldn't buy it, y'know?
Usually I would agree, but for people like Justin Chancellor (and Tool in general) it's a bit different, cos he uses alot of sounds that you just won't get out of a simple bass -> board -> amp set-up. I did quite alot of experimenting to try and get close to his sound when I first got some good recording stuff, and it is very difficult, there is just so much going on.

So, I played the first gig with my new band tonight. I get to the venue with my bass, Landmark head and 1x15 Ampeg cab, really excited to be gigging again. I then see the two guitarists loading in with full marshall stacks, (100W vintage modern heads, 2 4x12 cabs each), and my heart sinks.... I try to dismiss it, but I know exactly what is going to happen. We all start setting up, I D.I. into the PA and get a really nice SVT sound within 30 seconds that both me and the sound engineer love. The guitarists then set their rigs up and do a level check. They are both way too loud and the engineer asks them to turn down, to which they reply, (I bet you can guess), "No way, I need the master volume on at least 6 or 7 to get my tone! Can't you just get rid of these stupid mics on the cabs, they are useless anyway." The sound engineer then tries to explain to them that the mics are very useful for dispersion and EQing for the room to remove unwanted frequencies, but they have none of it and insist that they must have their volume high or they won't play. After about 15 minutes of arguing, the engineer shakes his head, throws his hands up and says, "Fine, go for it." The guitarists smile and quietly say to me, "We get this at every gig." (I can't imagine why.... ). I gritted my teeth and we got on with the gig, (which was actually ok once you got used to the ear-splitting guitar volume). Afterwards we were outside talking, and I suggest maybe downsizing their rigs to one 4x12 and a lower wattage (possibly switchable) head. Ofcourse this was met with cries of "Everything below 100W sounds cr*p" and "Big rigs and rock and roll" etc etc. They were slightly more receptive when I told them that a less powerful amp meant they could drive the power stage harder, but they still wouldn't agree to it. So here I am back at home feeling very annoyed at the guitarists, and ashamed that I had to play a gig infront of people who had seen the guitarists acting like such spoilt brats. It may sound silly, but this experience upset me. I have been band-less for so long...I finally find a really talented band who write great music and love band practices, only to find out they turn into total twunts when they are asked to turn down. I'm not being unreasonable right? rant over, haha.

Aguilar heads and cabs would be great

A lightweight backup head to go with a barefaced super 12
jackers replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
thanks for all the awesome replies guys! this place is amazing. I have been doing some reading up on the PF series and it doesn't sound like they will offer what I'm after. The SVT-7 looks interesting, although the size is a little confusing. Ideally I would like something to give my the SVT ish sound I like without having to carry around extra cables or boxes. -
A lightweight backup head to go with a barefaced super 12
jackers replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm in an old school rock band, so grindy ampeg is definitely my main stomping ground. Might have to try and pick up a PF or OTB and see how it goes, another attraction of those 2 is that they are quite cheap secondhand, which is useful for a backup. Thanks for the other suggestions too -
Hey all, I have decided to get a BF super 12, and am toying with the idea of picking up a backup, lightweight head for when I can't get my landmark 300 to gigs. I have a few ideas in my head, and was wondering what people thought, and if there are any more they would suggest. 1) Orange Terror Bass 2) Ampeg PF-500 3) TC RH450 I would ideally like something that would sound similar to the SVT-ishness of my landmark. It doesn't have to sound the same, but it does need to have that aggressive driven edge. Cheers

cheers for the replies I think PMT Oxford has some SR5s in, so a trip down to them might be on the cards. and I shall keep a look out for a tony levin OLP, as well as a secondhand sterling 5

Hey all, time for another silly question I'm looking to get a nice 5 string, and I'm seriously tempted by either a StingRay5 or a Dingwall Super P 5 (very different I know, they are just so beautiful and I love the fanned fret system). I have never played a stingray before, so I was wondering how close to an SR sound and feel an OLP would get me, so I could have an idea of whether an SR is for me, without a huge outlay of cash. Cheers

I have been having the same problem recently for either a Super P5 or an ABII5 GW, they are some beautiful Dingwalls, whereabouts in London are you?

Yep, that is indeed a non-export model, which IMO are much nicer as they have a proper jack socket, none of that start input rubbish In my experience their value varies a little. I have owned and sold 2 in the last 2 years, the first I bought for 450 and sold for 500, and the other I bought for 525 and sold for 420. I would say 450-500 being a good starting point.
-
yea, it's basically money vs weight the more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards spending more and getting a barefaced. It is lighter and will give better dispersion etc, and I should be able to get all the colour I need from the Landmark.
-
ah ok, I didn't know that. Is the HE closer to the half-sized idea of an 8x10? the main reason I didn't consider that as an option was the fact that it is 8 ohms, and my landmark is only 300W, so I want as much power from it as possible.
-
Cheers guys, probably should have mentioned that the head I'm using is a Tech 21 Landmark, which I have set to their 'SVT' setting, giving a very nice driven ampeg tone. Having tried other SVT cabs I know it will sound really nice, but thinking about lifting 40kg makes me cry

Hey all, To mark my return to the forum, here is a stupid question I've been without a bass cab for the last few months, and I'm getting the desire to get a new one. I've narrowed down my options to the Ampeg SVT410-HLF and the Barefaced S12. I am aware that each has their pros and cons; the ampeg is cheaper, but weighs almost as much as my house (which won't help my dodgy arms or bad back), and the barefaced is nice and light, very highly recommended on here, but is more expensive. I'm after an ampeg-esque kind of sound, so the ampeg would be a safe choice, but the weight of the barefaced and the glowing reviews on this site also make me think the barefaced would be good. I'm after some opinions from people on here Cheers guys!

I definitely agree about the pickups in the J, they were very aggressive sounding to my ears, which I loved. I've never found that sound from another bass.
