So what is a Jazz bass and what is the best example?
jackers replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
To me, regardless of what anyone else may say, the purest representation of a jazz bass is a fender, because I like the simplicity, and because that was the 'original'. Sure, other companies have made copies, or 'super jazzes' as some people call them, and they may suit some people's needs better than a fender jazz, but I definitely wouldn't call them the new standard for a jazz bass. Afterall, without the Fender Jazz, there may not be any other jazz basses either Also, I will happily admit to really liking having the word 'fender' on the headstock of my bass Not to show off or because I'm a fender fan-boy, but I just think it looks really cool, haha. Now I'm not saying that I don't like other companies takes on a jazz, because every Sadowsky and Sandberg I have played sounds incredible, but to me they just aren't quite a true jazz bass. /my 2p -
I'm guessing you're new to all this? Now is not the time to be getting hung up on the nuances of whether your Squier jazz bass sounds like the bass in the video with it's MM position humbucker. Get playing it and enjoy it! There is much time to faff about with tone in the future, when you are more sure of what you're after.
Yep, you have years and years ahead of you in which to waste lots of money trying to find your perfect tone haha. For now just enjoy playing

slight word of caution on the pickups in that model. There have been various reports on here and other bass sites that the chrome pickups are infact guitar pickups, rather than bass ones, (6 poles, loads of mids and nothing else), and so don't sound great. Here is a link to one site I found: http://bassoutpost.c...hp?topic=5610.0 Hope this helps.

Difference in sound change between hi and lo mids
jackers replied to jackers's topic in Amps and Cabs
cheers the eq is parametric, so there is a lot of stuff to mess around with, haha. -
Hey all, I have been playing with the eq on my Ashdown MiBass, and I've been trying to boost the mids to get a sound that cuts through in a band setting, but I've never had an amp with separated hi and lo mids before, so I was wondering what I would need to do to cut through. I currently have the hi mids boosted slightly, and the lo mids cut slightly. Any suggestions, or have I got the right idea? Cheers
It's not "fancy maths", just basic arithmetic. I've also made some big assumptions hence my question mark at the end of my final sentence. IANAE but I have at least tried to compare apples with apples (even if they are still different varieties ). Just complaining that they have gone up in price is meaningless; everything else has gone up too.
You make a sensible point, but you are making the massive assumption that everyone's salary increases at the same rate as prices on goods rise, which in most cases simply isn't true. The salary I get now is the same figure I would have gotten 5 years ago, but now my living expenses are significantly more than what they would have been at that time.

hey there if you are happy to go used, there are some great cabs on here. I recently picked up an epifani 212 for 500 and it's fantastic. There is also alot of praise for the new GK MBE cabs, and you can pick up 2 210 cabs new for about 500. There are also quite a few threads around on what cabs are a good match for the gb 9.0.

I have owned both hartke and ashdown rigs. I have just sold my LH1000 (which is an incredible amp, such a monstrous noise ), for an Ashdown MiBass for ease of moving stuff around. (As a side note, for me, the MiBass blows anything else ashdown have ever made away. It's amazing.) For value for money, you just can't beat Hartke, especially the LH500. It is really nice sounding and ridiculously loud IMO, that would or the HA would be your best bet.

the squier will be a great starting bass and don't worry too much about trying to sound like a youtube video, as the sound on them often comes from eq and compression after recording anyway. My best advice is to get playing and develop a technique that works for you, because this will be one of the main things that gives you 'your' tone. As far as jazz bass sounds go, it is very versatile. If you want a warmer sound, try rolling back the bridge pickup a bit, and if you want a more biting sound roll the neck pickup back a bit. I have also found that having both pickups on full acts kind of like a mid-scoop (i'm not sure why, as I'm not one for understanding electronics ). Enjoy the bass
Or 2 Ritters, or maybe a Fodera?...
haha, yea if I had that kinda money I would probably just go to the fender custom shop and keep the change, lol.

I love this man mind if i post it on my facebook?

cool idea My first amp was a Peavey 15W combo, (I think it was the old version of the Max 158). I literally played that thing to death (The volume pot eventually gave out so it only had 2 volumes, loud and 'ohmygodmyearsarebleeding' haha, which killed the speaker.) After that I went to an Ashdown Electric Blue 180 Combo, which was good for what I needed at the time. I then added a mag410T to it, which made for a nice (but cripplingly heavy) rig. Next I had my Hartke LH1000 and Hydrive 410, which is the first time I was genuinely happy with the sound of my rig. I have had this for 18 months and have just sold it to get my current setup, which is: -Ashdown MiBass 550 with an Epifani UL2 212. This setup is perfect, lightweight with a monstrous tone, I love it.

also, would the instrument cable cause a lower output volume? because my rig seems very quiet.
-
ok, cool. don't worry, I won't be, I just wanted to test the cab. I'm getting a speakon delivered tomorrow so I shall be able to check if everything is ok then.
-
could it have damaged the cab at all? (sorry I worry too much haha)
-
Cheers man that's what I wanted to hear.
-
Hey all, I know that instrument cables should not be used as speaker cables due to the likelihood of overloading the output power of the amp, but I recently got a new cab, and wanted to briefly test it but didn't have a speaker cable. I used an instrument cable for 5 mins, and wanted to know whether this could have done any serious damage to the amp, or whether 5 mins of an instrument cable is ok?

Rate 'em! 1x12s: Aguilar vs Purple Chili vs Mesa Walkabout
jackers replied to 1970's topic in Amps and Cabs
Having just got an epifani 212 from someone on here, I would definitely add the 112 version of it to your list. It is an amazing cab, and I think someone is selling one in the for sale section at the moment for about 285. I have heard good things about the purple chili and the aguilar, but the aguilar is much heavier than the others. -
I live right next to PMT Oxford, and they are all very friendly helpful guys. I bought my Ashdown MiBass and audio interface there, and they have been great at helping me with any questions I have (especially Fi, their bass guy). They have a pretty decent selection of bass stuff, and I have never had a problem with asking to try stuff out, even the 1600 quid MMs, lol. My only issue with them is that for some odd reason they don't keep a regular stock of short (i.e. under 10m) speakon cables, which is quite annoying sometimes. I can't comment on the online service, as I have never had to use it, but I have ordered stuff into the store before, which has always arrived quickly.
