Hope that you don't mind me jumping in here. I have a Kania contrabass....small bodied acoustic upright. I use a realistic piezo pup but want to record both pizz and slap. Should I use a large or small diaphragm condenser. Have AKG 714BULS and a small AKG pencil (can't remember model...silver colour). Have a few others but these are my most used. Room is bright but I use traps (framed duvet covers). So far been disappointed with the sound of the bass..muddy...tried close and distant miking

Would you pay a small fee - to try out a bass/guitar?
lowlandtrees replied to Big_Stu's topic in General Discussion
I play a bit sax. One of the problems down the years hasn't been the instrument itself but the mouthpieces. I would be prepared to pay a fee to bugger about with different mouthpieces and I think that there would be a (small ) market for this. I must have spent literally hundreds of pounds looking for the perfect m/pc. I think there is a similar parallel with bass strings. I recently discovered flatties and love them but I must have gone through a few bucks worth of sets to get there. Don't think you could charge though. I understand music shop dilemma but on the other hand a busy shop looks better than an empty one.......just got it.....why don't they sell coffee or go the whole hog and have a bar....christ......think I'm on to something here.. -
Now maybe I am just a s--t drummer (play a bit djembe) and gettin a bit oldn slow but it seems to me that my wavedrum is becoming a bit latensonically...well late. Did a factory reset today and not sure how that went but was wondering if anyone else uses this machine and has experienced this? I normally connect directly into my Focusrite Saffire.

Bassists who don't play in bands - what do you do?
lowlandtrees replied to Greggo's topic in General Discussion
I would love to join an old gitz band but not really interested in gigging every w/e and don't want to travel very far to practice and......this is the biggy....would like to ..like..the people that I play with. Was in a rock band 20 odd year ago...when you get older you are amazed at the s.i.e that you put up with when you were younger. I have a home recording studio and do most of the stuff. What happens is that it becomes all about the music..all the politics and fightin an sweatin an lugging cabs up 3 flights goes...but so does some of the fun... -
Thanx for the replies. Yes the E seems flappy and feel I could use a higher tension string. Since they are so damned expensive, however, I will persist for a while. Thanx again....very useful advice Jimmy

Only been playing DB 9 months. Teaching myself to slap using Youtube stuff (no teachers nearby). Have Innov Silver Slaps on a Kania contra (small bodied similar to Emminence EUB). I have a problem with slapping open E and to a lesser extent the A. Don't have a problem with fingered notes My question is ... 1. Does everyone have this problem....maybe open strings are not slapped? 2. Is it my technique....will it come with more practice 3 Is it the G string that is too slack and needs changing? 4 EUBs are crap to slap Jimmy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcRKZkk79-w I love these guys. Not sure what soul music is but these people touch mine -
Dave Vader. You are the only human to post on this thread so far. I would not dare post a foto of my shed. Some member would call in environmental protection. My studio is a nightmare of cables and filth.

I think that this is a great thread. Have experienced this first hand and at hundreds of gigs. Guitar bullies are endemic to live music throughout the country. I have strangely never heard a bass too loud although loud drums are common. It is all down to professionalism. In a live set you are there first and foremost to deliver a musical experience to an audience. If you want to just enjoy performing..go jam in a basement. Saw an interview with a bass player with Stings band who remarked how quiet the band was. Geetah bullies are not interested in what they are delivering...they can't see that far. I personally walk out of gigs that are too loud....not cos I am an old fart but because I love music.

The first "modern" sounding recording by today's standards?
lowlandtrees replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
I think that over the years there has been a slow drive to compress everything to the max and remove headroom. Current pop is not only compressed to death in the recording but the use of dynamics. space and silence in the mix has all but disappeared. Don't get me wrong I love that up front compressed vocal in its place but it is only part of a whole canvass. I can also appreciate a good pop song but I think the mistake that is being made is that they all use the same (probably) digital tools and ......all sound very similar......do I sound like ma da? -
Been playing guitar 40 years and bass 6 or 7 and just found out that I know virtually nothing about about strings....ie different materials, tensions, lengths blah blah. How could something so basic to playing escape me? Anyway I have a 78 rick 4001 strung with medium flats that is a dream to play but the Rick sound is not for me so I am letting it go but love the strings and thinking of putting heavy flats on my MM SUB. I love the sound of the MM but I keep it strung with heavy high tension wound strings (don't ask). Thinking of putting heavy flats on the MM. Would I still get the same sound and action from the flats on the MM? I am pretty skint at the moment so can' t afford to go experimenting with different bass strings.

Show some love for...Fender valve amps, lets see what you have.

Got a 1964 Champ guitar amp which I love. Only problem is that I wanted a line out put in but my tech refused to mess with it. -

My god, you are all so neat n clean n organised. No way that I am putting my studio in this thread, someone would contact environmental health.

First time that I have heard a NIN groove that I quite liked. I think the song however is just unfinished. Seems like they run out of ideas for a complete song. I can see other artists taking the groove in an interesting direction. It is a long time since I played in a band but I do remember a 'that's enough...it's finished' attitude. If I were them I would re visit the song and develop it. Of course, for those of you who failed to notice, I am not them, just a fat old critical git sitting at a PC.

Seen worse. A well known artist here in Scotland asked her fans directly to contribute cash to fund her next record. Michelle Shocked recently asked for her fans to advertise on her behalf. I see this as a wee bit cheeky but not malicious. Sales of recordings have plummeted so a return on this is unlikely.

The strings above have been IDed as Thomastik Superfexible by someone on the forum. They have been on the instrument for at least 6 months (when I bought the inst from another forum member...). What would be a fair price to put on them. Not interested in making a profit from this.

Not sure if I have attached the file correctly but was wondering if anyone recognised these strings. They appear pretty high tension to me.

Just changed the strings on my EUB (to Silver Slaps...what a difference). I don't know what the other strings are. Is there a way of IDing them? They have blue threads. They are steel and have very high tension(IMO). Thinking of punting them (or giving them away if they are of no value.

Best way to tell the wife..... ' I've just bought a new bass !'
lowlandtrees replied to Tullfan's topic in General Discussion
Just remember that truth should always be served in very small portions. I try to avoid it personally when it comes to music stuff. -
Damned expensive them there TI flats
-
Which gauge TI flats should I go for? This is a subject that I know bugger all about. I had always assumed that string gauge and tension were directly related. How do you know which strings are high tension and which ones lower (probably a tigga nooby question) ?
