1. D'Addario do a 6 set in flats - their Chromes series. For closer to home, try OVerwater strings. I have no first hand experience, but the Overwater people are great and would happily answer any questions about their strings I'm sure. 2. Just reading this today and it's knocked me for six. Like many, I didn't have the pleasure of meeting him face to face but I felt like he was a mate I could ask any question that popped into my head about bass or whatever. I bought a Precision off him a month or so back that has quickly become my regular bass. I'll be playing in tonight in his honour and I'm sure there'll be tears.

I loved his sense of humour. I'm sure everyone has their own stories or anecdotes they could share. Here's mine. Just scroll down to the last comment and revel in the warmth and humour and sheer mischief that comes across in Simon's post. Thanks to all who posted pictures of him - it's lovely to put a face to a name. Now I can imagine the mad hatter scheming away, finding that picture.

I'll miss him for sure. He made Basschat more than words and pictures.

  3. +1 for the Barge Concepts pedal. I have one of these (as well as their GLZ pedal) and they are top quality kit. Plus Geoff at Barge is a lovely guy. I use my VBjr for keeping some righteous low end mixed in with an overdrive pedal, or for keeping things a little sane with a BassBalls or Mini Q-Tron. Another big plus with this pedal is that the blend knob is easily adjusted on the fly with your foot. All good.

  4. Hi folks - apologies for a slight hi-jack here but I figure you guys will know the answer to this -

I have a 10 year old Fender Precision in Olympic White that has just had a bad reaction to a gig bag. It was in the case for a few days after a gig. Took it out the other day and there's some noticeable brown staining on the arm rest/belly cut. It seems to be less darker than it was now that it's been out of the case for a few days. I'll get some pictures up if that helps. So my question is - can this discolouration by buffed out, can anything be done with it?

Again, sorry for the derail - and fair play with the blueburst finish, I've been following this for a while now.

  5. I didn't get to try it with my upright - but I read that it didn't have a high enough input impedance which would limit it's compatibility with several of the piezo pickups out there. The EQ section was useful, tho I don't know what frequencies each knob was centered at. The manual was less than useful for that info. I don't imagine it to be a great DI/EQ for upright. The distortion channel (which can be used as a clean channel with the BLEND knob set fully to your clean signal) always has the COLOUR preset engaged, which has a huge mid-scoop and bass boost. Not good ingredients for most live settings (especially the ones I end up in at least 70% of the time).

Here's something that seems to have a bit of everything: http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/2093-...T_IN_TUNER.html

Certainly seems like a pretty handy pedal, and if I didn't have all of these components in separate pedals I'd be tempted to go for it.

  6. Get something with a flexible EQ - different venues pose different sound problems with the upright. If you can find one try a Fishman Dual Parametric DI.

A good tip to give the soundguy is to roll off a lot of the low end - from 100Hz down. That might sound like a high point to start cutting from but it can be very useful to letting to note be heard rather than the boom. A variable Hi-Pass filter works great for this - like the one found on Acoustic Image heads. That should be a feature common to all amps, IMO.

  7.
Your Googling is miles ahead of mine. The guy has transcribed loads of stuff, a lot of it beyond me, but others look OK. A big thanks from me, despite it not being my thread. :)
You're welcome Marvin. I was actually pretty chuffed with the karma of all this. Thought there's bound to be a scan of 'Do I Do' somewhere, and in searching for it came across that site which I know I'll benefit from greatly - so everyone's a winner, as the saying goes.

  8. In my experience eBay are asking you to wait for the seller to respond (again) as they monitor any correspondence back and forth. I think they need the seller NOT to contact you for a certain number of days before they can step in (in the case that he's ignoring you). If he responds with less than helpful suggestions that's a different issue.

Hope that helps. Just keep eBay in the loop with everything ans keep asking them for what the next step should be.

  9.
I would but you beat me to it, it's my proper name too! There seems to be a few Gareths on here, must be a bass player thing.

I've decided to use my spare cash for some decent cables and a mic but good luck with the sale.
Hey Gareth - fair play on the name. Yeah, I've noticed there's a lot of Gareth's around here too. I blame the rugby.

  10. Trying not be sarcastic here - but seriously - would anyone pick Gareth Hughes as a username??!?!?!??!!?! I wish it was a username but then my real name would have to either completely bizarre or so tediously boring that Gareth Hughes would sound like a good option.

And screw your main songwriter - use whatever pedals you want!!!
