Hi bassace--yes-your probably right about not having 'friendly' strings '58. Anybody know what strings were on offer in those days?--probably gut? What a sound! But as I have read a no. of times: 'It's all in the hands.' A friend who knew him said Ray Brown would sound like Ray Brown on any bass. I read an interview in a jazz magazine given by Ray Brown and he mentions that when he was learning his 'craft' in the 1940's bass players then were brought up to play acoustically--even in big bands---to project and be heard--no amps etc.then. I'm all for that advice.

Hi Fran I use the Ehurland pick up with the Ehurland pre-amp. Moving the Ehrlund to different positions on the top will give you a different tone and sound. Mine is placed not far from bottom of the 'f' hole on the E string side which seems to be my 'sweet' spot. Using the pre-amp gives the pick-up a big boost. My bass is a mid-late 19th century German bass--quite heavy--very solid. My amp is a GK MB150S combo. I love the deep solid sound both the bass and the amp gives. I currently use Innovation 'Silver Slap' strings. The combination I like giving more of that 'old schoo'l sound. Do bear in mind that every bass is different--what works with one will not be the same on another bass--one has to experiment. Hope my little bit of information helps.

Here is my '2 cents' (But over the years have cost me much more than '2 cents'!) worth on the subject of strings. Spiro Weichs I like---Innovation 'Honeys' I like. For that old school sound I have Innovation 'Super Silvers' on my old German DB. 'Super Silvers' I have found seem to have more tension than 'Silver Slaps'. Bear in mind that what is good for one bass does not suit another. I have a box full--approx 80--of used DB & BG stings (mostly DB)-all in fairy good order that I have acquired over the years. Not in sets-all singles. If anybody interested make me an offer as a 'job lot.'

I have used Schatten pickups on both my DB & 'Gypsy' style guitars. Good pickups. Bear in mind that every instrument is built differently & every make of string is different-and everyone hears different things. Finding the right combination can be a long journey--------------- and above all it is the player.

Just a line to say thanks for the organisers for putting on a splendid 'do' today. Nice to see / hear a good range of DB's & EUB's and players all in one place. A great atmosphere--very friendly---very informative. If on next year those of you who can make it put the date in your diary.
