[b]Price Drop. £4500[/b] Due to recent house move--lack of space--selling my German Double Bass. Two piece flat back of Maple. Spruce top. Circa from 1880's. Written valuation. Bought from a classical player approx. 30 years ago. Set up for me by Roger Dawson many years ago. The bass has had repairs before I bought it. Have you bowed Innovation Silver Slaps?

My '2 cents' worth Lazurus. I have tried bowing Innovation strings--they didn't do it for me. [b]But [/b]what I did like about Innovation was that I liked that 'old school' sound I was after--and good for slap. I changed to a used set of Evah Weich's and they are great for bowing / pizz / and slap. Infact I have a 2nd DB and I am thinking of putting on another set of Evah Weichs. -
Ist class transaction with Shonks. 100% recommendation.

I have an 1880's all wood--no laminate--heavy construction DB. Would I be doing the bass an injustice--volume/tone wise--by putting on light weight strings? (Weichs). Heavy DB's more suitable for heaver strings? Any views on the question?

I am looking for a used set of DB strings for my practice bass, suitable for pizz & arco. Strings must be in fairly good condition and have not been cut at the tuning keys. No synthetic strings please. How much playing time have they had?--and price please. PM me with details. Many thanks.

Thanks for the input guys. The bridge? Never thought about that. Just checked the bridge on my Eminence--hollow body--and the bridge has a good curve. So being a hollow body and a curved bridge things looking good for arco.

Does bowing on the EUB get as good as it gets on the DB ? What are your experiences have you had on bowing on the EUB? If so, for bowing & pizz on the EUB, what strings work for you?

Great advice from fellow Basschatter's. As mentioned check out Geoff Chalmers: 'Discover Double Bass' site. Absolutely awesome site for us DB players--11 out of 10 for Geoff. Great to hear you are into 'Gypsy Jazz'--I cannot understand why it is not a more popular in the genre of musical styles. There are some awesome gypsy jazz musicians out there--just go on Youtube and search on 'Gypsy Jazz'. Wow!--mind blowing stuff--a mixture of gypsy style standards and jazz--ranging from swing to be-bop--not to mention the waltz. My '2 cents' worth--listen to as much jazz as you can--from early jazz (1920's) all the way up the jazz spectrum to today jazz styles---listen to how the bass styles have evolved.

I have an Aria copy of the 335 fitted with a whammy bar. How good is the Aria in comparison to the Gibson 335? Being a jazzer would a change of pickups to good quality humbuckers make a difference? Could you recommend a good make of humbuckers? I am looking for a more warmer sound. Being new to having a whammy bar what gauge of string would you go up to--.056 to heavy?

I play finger style electric guitar. Experiencing a slight problem of finger nail noise coming through with the note. I am currently using nickel wound strings. [b]Do you use a different type of string to eliminate nail noise?[/b] Just to mention my nails are cut right down to the finger tip.

When buying a carbon bow--cheap'ish or expensive--how do to know what is the quality of the hair used?--would the seller mention the quality of the hair? From what I have read do not go for synthetic hair. Do you prefer black hair for it's grab on the strings? Anyone a French carbon bow to sell? If so PM me with details. Many thanks.

Is there a string out there that is good for pizz / arco and slap? Have you come across a make that is suitable for all three styles?--- a bit like trying to find 'a needle in a haystack'?

My expertise of bows is[attachment=233011:French Bow (4).JPG][attachment=233012:French Bow (2).JPG] nil. Who is knowledgeable about the bow in the UK?--Specialist shop? The colour of the wood appears to be mahogany--could be stained? Is there a publication about the bow?
