I wasn't taking the piss when I was talking about your band, you look really professional and the songs are performed to a higher standard than most bands! Anything else though? No comment
Yeah sorry dude read that a bit fast, it is hard sometimes to pick up on what someone means from a quick one line.

See I don't know it is, I said from the start pubs gigs don't really bother me. I think most of us would see that. It's bands playing smaller venues that have to deal with the free band issue. I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion, people need to start somewhere but they also need to realise that they can't mess with others who need these gigs as heir livelihood. A few post back the quote " love thy neighbour" was used,it swings both ways

Very good at what you do, Yeah cheers .I am pretty sure I never have I am also pretty sure I never said I did.
My band's drummer is annoying me by booking us gigs without actually contacting anyone else in the band first. Then getting all stroppy when one of us says we can't make it. He's the only one without other commitments, so just ploughs ahead and confirms stuff...
Yeah I would cut him slack, it's hard enough to get gigs and if you do get one but tell the venue " I have to check with the guys first" it doesn't go down well and having to make 5 phone calls just to confirm a gig is a real pain. then again he is a drummer so not sure if you have taught him how to use a phone Google calanders is a godsend. If you haven't book the night off then your gigging !!
-
Cheers guys, it is a lot of fun. That's our old drummer he finished last year. The new guy is amazing brings a whole different level to the gig and is a really cool guy too. We are very close and spend a lot of our free time together. "Find a job you like doing and you will never work again "

Yup pain in the ass, only takes a few mins to take the knobs off and do it properly. In fairness you shouldn't have to dismantle the bass to take the plastic off. Maybe its some kind of way of saving the second, third and forth world !
Very much this. Swanbrook out of interest can you provide a link to your band? I'd like to see/listen to what you do to give me a better perspective on your PoV.
Nothing special, it's a corp/ wedding band. We put in the work and have a lot of fun doing it. This is an old clip, songs are as cheesy as hell but that's the gig ! If you can suffer till about 7:30 it gets a bit more exciting with acdc stuff. Oh and please forgive the call me al bass solo !! http://youtu.be/Cv5AroFRKmg If that link doesn't work it's also on our website Www.deja-groove.com
. . . . says the 'businessman'
What's that meant to mean ?

Only a fool would think for a second that it happened, it was written by a muppet to justify being lazy.
Excellent. It reminded me of this little story: A businessman was on holiday on a tropical island paradise and was walking along the beach when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large fish. The businessman complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman explained it took less than an hour or so. The businessman asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The fisherman said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs so why would he need anymore? The businessman then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? The fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife , stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full, busy and enjoyable life." The businessman scoffed, "Look, I'm a highly educated and experienced businessman and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat and catch more fish than you need, whcih you could sell to make money. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. As the money rolls in and Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor. Eventually you could open your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. Of course, you would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to the city in order to run your new business empire from a corporate HQ." The fisherman asked, "But how long will this all take?" To which the businessman replied, "15-20 years." "But what then?" The businessman laughed and said," That's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions? Then what?" The businessman said, "Then you would be able to retire and move to a small coastal fishing village where you could sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."
What a crock of sh*te with no relevance

He can't be ..... I am the one and only !! Sorry In Advance

Ah ya gotta love it !! "Hey can I play the drums ??" Guest "I dont know, can you "

I pay my tax, I pay public liability insurance also have the gear insured separate to van insurance ( that one I don't mind as it cover all out gear no matter where it is ). The band is not set up as a business as we all pay out tax on self assessment.

Love doing dep work,I have my mark bass 4x10, my LMT head and rack tuner in a case and a case for leads and pedals and my bass in a soft case on my back. All goes on a hand truck one trip my car to gig. In saying that I don't do many dep gigs these days. Normal load takes about 45 mins from van door opening to starting the gig.i love everything about gigging and wonder is it mad that after 20 years I still love it from start to finish set up included.
-
Some gigs we use a crew depends on the night. To be honest we have so much craic that even doing gear is fun ! Use a crew when you need to or when the gig can afford to

I thought I had given both sides of the issue, I thought I was talking to people who are also open minded I accept that this has gone to stupidity, including some of my post re fishing, I accept that the thread gave me some entertainment while I wasn't to busy. I accept than when someone puts in a quote and all they can't think of writing is "this" that there not much left to say on the matter I don't think it was the op's intention to have a go at anybody but I think it did people's back up. I think it really has gone beyond boring and finally I accept that some people will never be able to see both sides of any argument

Great night and great crowd, played on for an extra hour as it was so much fun! Place was jumpin and we got another 2 weddings from it. Big into their old school rock so we played lots of thin lizzy acdc queen Metallica. Enjoyed that one hope tonight is as much fun then I am off for a weeks holidays
I fish too, maybe for 50 odd years, I don't seem to recall killing any of them!
Then what do you do ...... Not 50 years of pulling fish out of the water only to f*** them back in again is that nor worse dude, at least catch them to eat them no. Is that not like going to the pub ordering a pint of Guinness and just looking at it " lovely eh" "Yup sure is, will we drink it ?" "Noooooo can't do that stick it back in the keg" Yes I am just kidding !
-
...... That's what I have been saying since the start, there is no fuss. You asked for an example I give you one that I know if and you picked holes in it to see only what you wanted to. That's was my point all along just see both sides not just your side
-
...... Jasus dude the post was along the lines of Btw pm me for names of venue and bands and I will happily send them Local venue when I moved here used to pay 80 quid a man to play on a sat night, some other bands set up and went in for 30 quid a man. Cheap bands have split up and f***ed off leaving the first bands still getting 30 quid a man. In fairness the venue now only does small two piece gigs I think. But if that inst real enough I don't know what is. I don't play the venue, only ever did one gig there and really diddnt like the owner so never went back.
-
I think it's clear that the people who play for free are either kids trying to get a start, guys like mushy who have played one gig this year( even you 14 year old has done more gigs than you) fly fisher is clearly too busy needlessly killing fish for sport ( shame on you sir) or guy just as a hobby having the craic. Really don't think it is a prob for me. .... But then I said that in my first post Funny enough I did a dep gig a few weeks ago in a jam band and had a blast ( yes I got paid as did we all) I couldn't do it every week as it would bug the life out of me for much the same reason that some of you said you can't do the corp scene, different people different gigs eh !
-
Using the same logic of "never play for free cos the landlord is making money and should pay you" we should never attend an open mike or a jam session without demanding payment as the main reason they run is to make money by (hopefully) drawing a crowd who put money in the till. In my day job I'm continually up against hobby woodworkers who only charge for materials and a bit of pin money and so can easily undercut me. It's the way it works, I can't change it so I just have to be better, do something that's a bit different, make myself standout. I suspect that the same may be the case in music. Steve
Pretty sure nobody has said never play for free
-
As I said from the start playing for free in the right venue is how it is done, really bored with repeating myself Redstiper ..,. I gave a real world example in a local venue. If you want to read it go back a few pages you diddnt get it first time I doubt you will now. Play for free all you want guys I am just amazed that you are that singled minded that you can't see both side of the argument.
