1. Had to cancel last minute this year but I have just stuck it in my diary for next year. I have a gig on the Friday but the rest of the weekend is clear ! Going to keep it that way and finally make it over to the show.
2.
I was drinking it, not reading it
Lol love that reply
3. 5 gigs in 4 days and still one to go tonight, plus doing a wedding fayre in a few hours Our singer is on maternity leave and the new girl is on fire !! Really great feed back from the weddings lately Spent an age learning "party rock" did it at the last few gigs and it has cleared the floor really thought it was going to go down well.,,,,, should stick with summer of 69 Up note got asked to play highway to hell as a first dance, turns out I sing it really well and it's in the wedding set now and is a huge end of night song ! Happy gigging !!
4.
This Saturday's gig was an odd one, we were at a place that had begged us to return, only to be stared at, virtually NO applause, a real negative vibe, I was ready to knock gigging on the head by the end. Came off stage and everyone was raving about us?!?!? Huh!? some audiences are just weird!
It's always strange when that happens. Thurs early set from 6-8 was the very same (Arthur's day ) playing to sober people in the afternoon is messed up. Came off stage and got 2 new weddings from it a corp function and more dates in the bar ...... Always gets me D
5. Line 6 g30, just try it you won't ever use a lead again
6. When it comes to spending money I will never see the light!!! Sorry, that was bad real bad I bit the bullet and got them, when I have the stage set up this weekend I will post a few pics. Cost me under €800, ithink I will prob end up getting another one for bigger gigs but I am hoping 2 will do the job for me on most of the venues.
7. This is the type of thing I am looking for They are using two of the smaller units I was talking about. I might take a punt on them
8. They look pretty cool, how many do you use and any chance you have a picture of them in use. Cheers dude
9. The idea would be to have them on stands either side of the stage, as I had the cans before. I just find the led par cans a bit weak and the centre of the stage is too dark I will post a picture of the effect I am going for. I know it's achievable with 2 of these units ( mind you a cheaper version) each side. Some nights we get 45 mins to get a 5 k rig and full back line in and checked before the first dance so if one of these each side will do the job it will save a bit of time. I am just wondering what everybody else is using
10. Hi guys Just looking for recommendation on light. So I play/ run a five piece wedding/ corp band. We have a big set up that can go from small 80 people gigs to venues up to 750. Anything bigger I alway hire in a pa and lights. I am using some led par cans and njd spectors but hate them, I and looking at getting a few ledj q Colour http://www.djanddiscostuff.com/lighting-c1/band-stage-and-uplighting-c9/led-stage-wash-c86/ledj-ledj-q-colour-led-lighting-effect-p337 My idea is to buy 2 and maybe a third for bigger gigs It's the effect I want. A stage wash where everything is lit up no dark spots or par cans in the way. What do you guys use ? Cheers D
11. Get it right at the start and the rest is small adjustments, I have only 2-3 times in a 2 hour show that I can make changes. Unless it something really urgent it's gonna wait until I have a break. Over the years you get to know your sound and venues you play so it's much easier than it sounds.
12. Yeah I enjoyed that, love your choice for videos on the home page show some really great chops and cool groove. All looks smart and clean and professional.
13.
There is a magazine for bass players?????????
Yup but it just has pictures and a paint by number section 😂
14. Print is dead .... Or so they say, me I still love to get a copy every now and then. I do find the reviews are the worst as you get the feeling they are afraid to say anything bad about the item being reviewed, just in case they decide to pull their adds from the mag.
15. Wow I have always loves this bass ! Best of luck
16. Ah drummers, they are all a bit mental ! I had to get rid of a guy who had been playing with us for 5 years because I just couldn't take any more bull from him. Took a while but found a guy who is unreal, has toured the world played with some amazing bands and is a really really nice guy. It has changed the whole band around everyone is so happy the gigs are just like going out with your mates for a night and we have never been tighter Bliss
17. Check out the version he does live with the James brown bit in it, the second I heard it we put it in our set
18. It's a pity more shops don't do it, it's just like saving in reverse Mind you maybe it's better for our marriages that more shops don't offer it !
19. It's easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission 😱
20. Mad ! I did the same last weekend, 22 years of playing it was a first time for me too, they where Dingwall and no weren't 22years old
21. Full time wedding band, we use Kme speakers 2 x Kme prestige tops and 2xmatching bins but I have another set of the exact same agin for big venues. Kme 2400 amp for the bins and a 1600 amp for the tops and a Kme cross over A&h desk too and out mons are 4x Ev sx300 with two 1600 amps. Mos weddings the pa is at about half but man it's sweet sounding ! I do believe in keeping everything matching it for sound so much as its less likely to cause and damage. I am very interested in the new line 6 powered pa, it seems quite Well Priced, but I would love to play with it first !!
22.
True, but you also need to know when to not spread the chops on thick. I have no chops (blazing solos, triplet slapping/tapping etc) to speak of (even less than I ever had) but in my experience of session work, what MDs want is a solid bass line to build everything else on. I have depped work out in the past and gone in for the next session with the same guys and been welcomed back because I did not have an opinion about everything that was happening and did not want to share my ideas all the time. Rest assured, I have an opinion about everything that happens in a session and could save a lot of time by pointing out why something is not working etc etc, but that is not what I am being paid for. That is the MD's gig and I want him/her to hire me for the next session cos I made the project sound good with my playing not never phone me again cos I made him look like an incompotent eejit. Some of them are, but they are still the ones who do the phoning. In 25 years of doing studio work I have never been called upon to spend time up where the guitarist's register is. That is what MDs use guitarists for. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Reading? I have yet to meet an actor who is cast for a part and just says "I don't need the script, I will just pick it up from the DVD". Obv there are monster players who do not read but never stop working. Pino is the obvious one. But in the bread and butter world of studio work why would anyone pay for half an hour studio time + half an hour of 8 other player's time to teach anyone a song when they could plonk a part in front of someone else and just say "wait for the red light and then play after 1 bar of click'? Opinioinated? Moi?
Yup Bang on If the md asks you to play less notes it's already too late you have p1ssed him off
23. Back when I started out there was no Internet forums ( Jasus I feel old now ) the only way to meet other musicians was at clubs and gigs and hope somewhere you might get a spot to play. Open mic nights where great My first gig came from a friend of mine, his dad played in a wedding band and I sat in for the bass player, I was 14 and was pretty sh1t. But word got around and by 16 I was gigging by 19 I was touring and by 23 I was driving a new car and living in my first new house. If its what you want you will find a way or it will find you. A lot is luck a lot is on that list and a lot is hard work. I don't do religion but I am thankful that I get to go work and have as much fun as I do.
24.
Firstly point 6 kind of suggests you think you were born a bass player, and didn't have to practice.... If thats the case you are a miracle and there is no one else like you. Secondly, these points tell you how to maintain getting sessions once you have already had a session. How did you get your first session? Did someone contact you, did you know them? Thats the information thats really useful and 9/10 it's either, "yeh I knew him from school" or "I met him at a party." Do you see what I mean, and then from the guys I know that are doing it, it's the same guy that keeps calling, or it's one of his friends, or someone they did a session with in the past ect.
Work gets you work, getting one gig might lead on to another and then might lead to some recording and so on. I don't think anybody has ever picked up a bass today and became a pro session head tomorrow. But before any of that happens it helps, well helped me to have these "rules". I don't think I am a great bass player by any means but I have made a good life from music playing bass. Am I ever going to get a dep gig for jamiroquai no but I do provide a good life for my family from music.
25. I have done a fair bit of session work, would have done more if I could read ! This for me gets me work 1. Be prepared 2. Be respectful of yourself and others 3. Be punctual 4. Play what's required 5. Have a good attitude 6. Acknowledge that we were given a "gift" and be thankful for it 7. Excercise good people skills
