Here's my 55-01 with switched out electronics. My first serious venture into 5ers. Previously any time I tried getting into 5ers I'd be drawn to my 4s..most of them are locked away. These are not only aesthetically pleasing but play fantastic. Great balance, super nice, flat necks and the replacement preamp and pick ups provide a fantastic tonal range. The Skyline models are another of the entry model ranges that deserve more respect. More than happy to recommend them to anyone considering thinking of getting one.

Grave Yard stomp - The Meteors (though I thought it was The Cramps)

We see many, many threads starting with "what's the best..." which then leads to us recommending what WE think is the best item fitting the description. I've often done it. Thankfully today there are very few poor examples of basses, amps, electronics - certainly less than when I started playing back in the 80s. However I'm sure there are brands which continue to churn out less than good equipment - I'd like to hear from the experience of others what I should avoid. Good "for instance" - the Fender Infinity range - they sell for bird seed - yet they bear the Fender name. Why would F allow this if they are "bad" basses? What about the "entry models" for big brands - the real Warwicks are held with great esteem (despite the company's poor CS) yet the Rockbasses seem to be view with disdain. I need more information. Share your experiences?

Had two of these. Misguidedly sold the first when I bought the SB2 (you don't need 2 G&Ls do you) then replaced it after realising you do. Sold the second one when I ventured into the world of 5ers. As I've said many times - you're getting a lot of bass for not many pennies with a G&L. Just need to find a nice 5er tribute.

I bought a Hohner B2 fretless in the 80s which had the first dot on the fourth fret.....apparently there were more than one marked like this. -

I was going to bid - my first ever bass...

I can recommend both the SB2 and the M2000 - I've owned examples of both and are excellent basses for not a lot of pennies. These are NOT £300 basses yet that's what they can be bought for.

Even though everybody knows the name I still think people underestimate the quality of the brand. I recently acquired a BBG5S which sounds amazing - I think that most of these Yamahas should have at least a 1 on the front of the price tags. The entry models sell for less than £100, the top of the range, which I'm sure many would agree are world beaters, are less than most of the mid range of their competitors. Re-enforces my belief that many basses are overpriced for what you get, yet others are seemingly too cheap.

The 'little things' that make bass life better!

At the first Herts Bash Andy from D'Addario brought several down to use - no idea what happened to them though. -
Yeah but you'll never see any famous players using one. Oh, hang on a minute..

Just browsing through the basses for sale thread and there have been at least 3 sold here in the past 2 months. I really need to pay more attention.

This seems to be another serial bodger with several self builds. We're all used to the Hohner Cricket bat style bass - this takes it one further. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154401709430?hash=item23f30f1d76:g:xxYAAOSwpHxgaW~0

I don't claim to know too much about these so, going along with the theme of " I don't believe this Fender"... Seller claims it's an active Fender Jazz - with Humbucker pup. He doesn't sound very convincing though. Is this for real? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284242414424?hash=item422e2b0b58:g:SiYAAOSwJLtgYtO0
