I think they're copying the EBMM Model....charge far too much so when you reduce by £500 people think they're getting a bargain.

What we don't necessarily appreciate is how good "budget" gear is today compared to what was around when we started playing. I started playing in the early/mid 80s and TBH a lot of the used gear that was available was garbage. Nowadays, I keep finding budget gear that is surprisingly good. Like many here I am financially stable with disposable income so, for me, spending it on myself and my hobbies is completely justifiable. Whenever I've had high end gear I've been too precious with it so had trouble justifying having it sitting in a case rather than using it. I believe that there is a psychological benefit from using high end gear - having nice gear makes me want to play more and I get more satisfaction from playing. I'm glad that young people have access to resources that weren't available when I started playing. Anything that highlights the Bass guitar (over geeetars) is a good thing in my mind.

There are lots of "solid" basses in your budget. Very few bad basses about now. Squier Standard - you get the benefit of PJ pick ups, nice neck and traditional design. Mine is currently with @Lozz196, I'm sure that he'll confirm they're VFM. If you want something a bit different a Bass Collection SGC Nanyo - 301 is passive, 310 is active. Great necks and beautifully weighted/balanced.

@BCH has a Quilter Bassliner for sale for not a lot, for what you get. You could do much, much worse....(see if he'll lend it to you for a while).
-
@BCH's Quilter Bassliner is a monster - used to be mine - can't understand why it hasn't sold already. It's a steal at any price, never mind what he's selling it for. If I was gigging and didn't already have an alternative, I'd buy it back.

Interesting comments...Even though I think Prince was an absolute "genius" and that there were few as prolific, original and pushed the boundaries of music as he did - I don't believe anybody, not anybody, is the greatest ever. There are, have been and will be many great musicians. What I prefer may not be what you do, who I think was great you may not. What we can all agree on, hopefully, is that there are musicians who made massive contributions to the field of Music and comparison is meaningless. Music has benefitted from so many great musicians and long may it continue!!

Looks like an ideal project for @Andyjr1515 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324583393290?hash=item4b92ad880a:g:OYsAAOSwPxNgf~ud Unfortunately, the truss rod nut has failed out of warranty, having either come unthreaded or broken, and just spins freely in its collar. The hex socket isn’t stripped and the nut is captive, so can’t be repaired or replaced by itself. Yamaha say they don’t supply replacement necks and that to replace the truss rod will need the fingerboard to be removed, a job that’s beyond my skill level and my pocket. Although technically “playable”, the neck relief can’t be altered as the rod cannot be tensioned, so I’m selling it for spares or repair only, it might suit someone as a project or to cannibalise for spares. Everything apart from the truss rod is in full working order and had only light, home use. A reserve has been added since I posted this.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/294126193480?hash=item447b498b48:g:AtEAAOSwdU5geaiQ Vintage late 1970’s / early 1980’s - genuine WAL mk1 Bass Guitar hard shell case. This is from the early days of WAL - Ian Waller and Pete Stevens in High Wycombe. Condition is: Rough, but not rubbish. Bad bits: 3 of the 4 catches are broken / parts missing. There is one significant perforation by the logo. There are scratches all over it. There is gaffer tape residue on some of it. There are fine specs of white paint on it, (usual story - someone decides to paint their kitchen ceiling, but leaves the case in there! Happens a lot to Marshall amps too!). All metal parts have slight rust / tarnish on them. See pics.... Good bits: apart from the dent in the front, there’s no other damage to the shell. The interior is complete, no damage just well used. The leather handle, although tatty is complete. The two single hinges and the one long bottom hinge are all complete. Although slightly loose are fully functional. See pics.... You wouldn’t want to take your vintage WAL on tour with it! But if you have a very rare mk1 without a case, it would compliment it nicely. Auction only, no buy it now. It is listed with ebay global shipping. If your country is not listed, it’s not going there. Thanks for looking

One for sale on Gumtree - used. Before looking have a guesstimate what a used sparkly 2020 MM (special edition apparently) might sell for. https://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/music-man-ltd-edition-06-of-85-bfr-stingray-4-hh-bass-guitar-in-pink-champagne-sparkle/1403203782
