I had one in my SC Harlot and, yes, they can be a nightmare to master (not saying that I did). I fiddled with it till I found a tone that I liked then left it alone. You're absolutely right about "best neck" - love the asymmetric design Alan uses... Definitely persist with it...

I prefer 35s but as @JohnR says it is harder to get the ones I want. Not a fan of Rotosounds. You can still get 35-95s from Status for around £15, and you can get the same gauge from Alice (Chinese) on eBay. Inexpensive rather than cheap - they do last, keeping their tone and feel. -

I have a Sire V3 and a MM Sterling SUB - both within your budget - no reservations about recommending either. There are going to be loads which do the job within your budget - I'd look to see what you can borrow short term or try till the shops open.
