I guess it depends on your bass, strings and technique, but I can achieve the "old school thump" that sits well in my rock and roll band, although I have to tame the highs a bit with the eq on my amp. Thats on my DB with Presto strings btw...

ACG 01 pre-amp. 2 x ACG Custom hum buckers with coil taps, Hipshot hardware, Schaller Straplocks, Neutric locking Jack. Hiscox case included. Currently strung with SIT Nickles Fantastic range of tones and the best B string I'e ever played!
