Just bought a bass from Mike, clearly been well looked after, (the bass that is ), sold for a fair price with a nice cuppa and a good ole chat about bass stuff thrown in for good measure! Be happy to trade with him again in the future

Can you recommend a drum machine to practise with?
andyonbass replied to stefBclef's topic in Theory and Technique
The Korg Pandora has a load of drum patterns, as well as many other useful features for a practice anywhere solution. I had the older PX3B but I'm sure the current models have the same if not more features. -

Funny things you've heard at a gig/soundcheck?
andyonbass replied to krispn's topic in General Discussion
I depped for a band where the singer said she couldn't do a certain song because she hadn't learned the ad-libs yet -
Heh, was hoping someone would mention him (Colin Hodgkinson), I couldn't think of his name. Virtuoso indeed! Would love to see him play.
Sorry to hijack, but how do you fretless guys monitor your playing in a live situation? Often as not I struggle to hear myself playing fretted bass in the band where intonation isn't an issue (as long as you hit the correct fret )
It's not a planet waves cable by anychance is it? Some of these can have a little "spring" type area on the jack which I suspect is meant to make it grip better. Doesn't always work in reality though
If the previous owner used Planet Waves cables it may have opened out the contacts a touch, making non PW cables a sloppy fit. Wouldn't be the first time I've heard that. -
Go and see a few bands around your local pub circuit, and if you hear what sounds good to you, go and pick the brains of the bass player and check out his gear. It took me a long time to learn that what you hear on stage can be totally different to what the punters hear out front.
I might just give it a shot, it's not huge money, and hopefully it's up to the job. I won't be asking too much of it!
I'd be interested in your findings, it could be that I had a duff one
I all fairness ACG's do kick out a fair amount of bass
Good point but it was the same with my mim passive jazz. All sound fine through headphones though.

I have a Vox amplug and its fine with headphones, but when I tried it with the matching cab, it would fart out even at accoustic guitar volumes, and yes it was the bass version!
If you want a good fingerboard replacement or just defretted The guys at Sei basses/ Bass Gallery do a sterling job.

Status Electros are just amazing as fretless basses. I have an Electro 2. When it has halfwounds on it it sings like nothing else. Flats on it give a lovely thumpy sound. Doubt Rob Green would be able to make a new wooden neck as he doesn't make wooden necks any longer. That would have to be done by a luthier. Again much money. I thibnk a defret would bring this alive.
Thanks guys, a trip to the gallery is looking increasingly likely -
My daughter has a sixty quid Westfield P bass. Its a brilliant piece of kit and I'd be happy to gig it anytime if it wasn't PINK!

Dunno if this is still available, but BFM cabs sound great with MB heads. Great price too.

Help with finding a hollow body/semi acoustic bass *Sorted*
andyonbass replied to Valhalalf's topic in Bass Guitars
Hey guys I've started doing some acoustic trio sets in pubs and at weddings using my jazz bass which is fine but not in the vibe of the acoustic thing. I really want to bring something a little different to these gigs than my usual gigging bass. After lots of um-ing and ah-ing over whether I shoud buy another acoustic or an EUB or a Ukele I think I'm now set on getting a fretless semi acoustic bass in the Godin A5 style. I really like the idea of the thinner electric body for comfort but with the piezo acoustic bridge. I know there's a lot of expensive options (Godin, Renaissance, Rob Allen) but after tralling the interwebs I was hoping some people on here could point me in a different direction.I really liked the look of the Fender a/e pbass with it's semi body, f hole and acoustic bridge plus the option of blending in the lace sensors for a touch of electric bass. But perhaps a bit out of my price range atm and kinda hard to come by. Any suggestions will be most appreciated
I was in a similar situation myself, considering the defret route, but I would prefer an unlined board. Check out this link and drop me a pm if it is of interest to you. There doesn't seem to be too much around at the moment in terms of fretless five string basses.
That's a fine looking bass, get a new fretless neck....string it with flats....you don't like ...you got a neck to sell....you get it de-fretted...you don't like it........stuffed
I take your point, but allow me to refer you to my "disposable income" comment above!! If a bit more work comes in thats exactly what I'll be doing if I still have it. -
Oohh I'm quite surprised how much I love this bass as I'm not keen on the status look (fantastic sound though) I'm imagining this fretless and tuned e-c. I would love to hear how it sounds! Bump for a fantastic bass
Thanks Lee, yeah, I reckon it would make a great fretless, its quite a bright sounding bass, but can be persuaded into an old school thump using the versatile tone control, especially with the halfrounds on it. I'll give it a week or so and then look into the cost of a defret or replacement board -
