I'll contact Howard and get him to get the bass back off Pino - then I can sign the headstock for him
-
Well, I can confirm that I never wanted a reliced bass, and certainly not one that was practically pink - but after a couple of notes unplugged I was sold. Maybe the factors that make a bass "special" vary for each person though, maybe my Pino wouldn't do it for you. I suppose experience can't be bought and the only way to know what you like is to try lots of things until something stands out above the rest. Thats where I consider myself to have been very lucky in that I had that bass, stupidly sold it, and was actually able to get it back again. Maybe my Jedi bass is not the [s]droid[/s] bass you are looking for?
I've looked at that and it's beautiful looking apart from I really don't like the headstock You're keeping the lesser quality bass that you much prefer to play as it has an undefinable quality to it yes?
To be honest once you've played the Lull and felt how light and perfectly balanced it is you will forget all about that headstock shape (I don't mind it myself). Basically you're correct, the lesser bass has sentimental value and I have always been at my most inspired when playing it. I was SO close to selling the Fender in favour of the Lull though, which considering how highly rated the Fender is, should tell you a lot about how good that Lull is.

Seeing as I'm no longer selling the Pino I would certainly recommend its better quality sibling: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/214732-mike-lull-p4-7lbs-5oz-of-p/page__fromsearch__1

Thanks for all the kind words, it is indeed an amazing precision bass.
Ah Jas, are you sure?
Not really, but my credit card doesn't care
Are you *sure* about this?
Ditto!
Couple of questions if I may. Did the new tuners mean more holes or did they match the existing? What made you change them and are the originals still available? I can't quite see what strap buttons you have on it. Originals or locks? Where are you based? I can't see that information on my iPad. Thanks.
Tuners were a straight swap over, no modifications made. I did swap the bushes over, again no changes required. Originals are still with it, I just wanted to lose a little more weight and improve balance. It was already very good, but the Fender design has always been a little neck heavy to me. Strap buttons are Jim Dunlops, Original reliced fender buttons included. I'm near Ipswich in Suffolk. J -
*Withdrawn* This has been a very hard decision to make but I have done some impulsive buying lately and am suffering for it, as I can't seem to move on the other 2 basses I own at the moment. You all know the score on this one - its a very early one (certificate dates it at 1st Dec 2005) and I think the relicing is excellent compared to the later ones which have a very "template relic" look to them in my opinion. The neck was replaced with a brand new one from Fender Custom Shop not long ago as the old one was confirmed to have a faulty truss rod. It has been stamped with the same serial number as the bass, although the date is now much more recent. I don't have the old neck, understandably they kept it. The new neck is nicer than the old one was anyway so it was a win-win situation! I have changed the tuners to Gotoh Res-O-Lites from Madison Music (reliced lightly). These are nicer than the originals and lighter so the entire bass is now just over 8lbs. Originals included of course. No mods required to swap back. I've also shielded the bass cavities so its now noise immune and I was impressed how much difference it made. I had to replace some of the wiring when I did it as the original stuff was the "waxed cloth" type and the cores had work hardened and some only had a strand still connected so I figured I would rather make it reliable whilst I had it apart. A few BC'ers have played this bass and have heaped praise on it. Rightly so. I can't really see any way out other than selling this or my Lull so here goes nothing.... Collection/meet up much preferred as I'm out of giant boxes to post it in at the moment. Ouch! Could be worse mate, I bailed out of mine 3 months before the exams To be honest I'm starting to think I can justify 2 P basses anyway because this is just too nice to get rid of so I might withdraw it anytime soon. In fact, here it is now (I've been playing it tonight)

No trades, need the £[s]1750[/s] back. Now £[s]1700[/s] [s]£1650[/s] £1600 This came up for sale only last week and I knew it would be a first to respond sale and I couldn't resist finding out so I bought it as it was an easy drive to collect. http://basschat.co.u...ull-p4-on-hold/ Amazingly nice bass, stupendously light (it literally feels like a toy), it will take a setup so low it highlights my utter lack of technique and the quality all round is just spot on. I've oiled the fingerboard with quite a lot of fret doctor as it was very dry and its now back to a lovely dark chocolatey brown. Other than that its exactly as it was a couple of days ago, which is to say excellent condition. I've realised there is only a need for one fretted P bass in my life and my Pino is not easy to beat. I'm quite thankful really as I was going to sell all sorts of stuff to recover my Sadowsky NYC but the same thing applies - I know if I got it back I'd still prefer the Pino for P bass-ness. So I've learned something by the process for a change Collection preferred but I can courier at buyers expense. I certainly felt sorry for the OP over on Talkbass - having handed over 5k and got that I would be disappointed to say the least. In that sort of price bracket my expectation is that I am paying for the skill of a craftsman, someone who cares about what they do and takes great pride in their work. I think buying an ex-demo or even worse, made (in a massive rush) for NAMM bass unseen is very unwise but he clearly did it based on his trust in Jimmys reputation. Either way, it is perfectly fair to say we all have our off days and mistakes can go unseen under pressure etc. This is where customer service shines. Personally I am disgusted with Jimmys response. I am a person who could afford to buy an AC and have often considered it. I'm very lucky to have had the chance of trialling an AC and based on that I was considerably put off. Nice bass, but not built with the quality and attention to detail I would expect in order to justify me spending that much of MY money. I can't imagine me ever being tempted by one again. I don't think I'm the only one though, and its foolish to assume that everyone who feels this way must all be trolls who are not rich enough to join this luxury club.

Ditto all the sentiments above, Pete was a pleasure to deal with and I would happily do so again.

Facebook page was updated 4 hours ago so I doubt the walking dead have afflicted Brighton in the meantime - might be worth being more patient

No trades please. Great condition, couple of little dings and buckle rash on the back, but nothing through to the wood. As these are finished in nitro they are quite susceptible to scratches and the like anyway. I've replaced the tuners with hipshot ultralites as the bass was a little neck heavy (and I've never played many fenders that aren't) and that made the balance spot on, which combined with a very low weight of 8lbs 3 oz makes it a joy to play. Original tuners are included, along with all case candy as I received the bass. Original tuners can go straight back on, but I see no decent reason to do that now. I bought this for a recent project that has not come to fruition and also an opportunity to recover an old friend means last-in, first-out applies so this has to go to raise funds Hard case in very good condition. Collection preferred (meet up somewhere is possible, depending on distance from Ipswich) but I'll ship it if needed. Must go, so now £950 I seem to have deleted the pics, will ulpoad in a bit: something for now....

Sometimes used to happen with mine as well. I just used to move it about and it would usually stop. Maybe put some tape over the exposed metal bits or some foam as you suggest?

Fender PB70 Precision on ebay Japan, opinions?
Legion replied to tedmanzie's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I used to own one and this looks kosher to me - the "xx-US" models have the USA pickups in. -
Recommended luthier for sheilding job? - SORTED

I didn't use a graphite spray - I found an internet vid showing the stuff and and it was registering 150 ohms, great for dissipative electrostatic stuff, but the copper foil comes in at 0 ohms so I used the foil I had instead, rather than apply multiple layers of graphite based paints. -

Nevermind - found someone but thought "sod it, I should be more than capable of this". So I stripped out the pickups and foil lined the whole thing, including the little channel between cavities. Fitted new wires to the pickups as well as the stupid old school waxed cloth had work hardened significantly and were almost totally knackered. Now silent as a mouse (well, apart from the intended notes) -
Anybody able to suggest someone who can do a nice professional job of sheilding a bass for me please? Thanks
