THE worst (bass related) feeling in the world
Legion replied to warwickhunt's topic in General Discussion
I once hoisted my lovely "chocolate thunder" Aguilar DB cabs a little bit too casually into the car and tweaked my back, then on unloading at the venue I promptly pushed it one step too far and totally did my back in. I played the gig sitting down as I couldnt stand, and had to leave the load out to the rest of the band as I needed to make a fast escape to bed/painkillers. Got my stuff back the next day and they had managed to break the catch on my rackcase and then drag the afforementioned broken catch across the top of my cab ripping the tolex in the process. Happy, I wasn't. I moved the cabs on quite quickly as everytime I looked at the damage I relived the horror. I never managed to repair the catch either and had to chuck a very expensive rack case. -
Earthing/Hiss problem with RH450 & RS210's
Legion replied to Legion's topic in Repairs and Technical
I reckon it's the power supply where you are using it. I had a similar experience in my parents front room on a socket we barely use with a LM 3 and Berg HS410.
I forgot to mention that the wiring in this house is pretty awful and the first thing on my list of to-do's in a couple of weeks. So I'm inclined to assume that the more "sensitive" Fenders are just picking up rubbish that was not present in my previous house. Testament to the quality of shielding on the Sadowsky if it does turn out to be the problem. I'll try a different area of the house if I get time tonight, see if it helps. -
I'm just looking for a few second opinions on this one and a bit of sanity checking... Last night I put my RH450 back into the RS210C cab making a combo, and stacked it on top of the RS210 giving me a 4x10 vertical stack. I plugged in my Pino and got a pretty awful level of hiss with the volume up. Turning the tweeters down helped, as did the treble control on the EQ but it is clearly an earthing/shielding issue as touching the bridge or strings reduced the noise massively. Then I plugged in the Tony Franklin and got a similar, albeit slightly lower level of hiss. I tried different intrument cables to no effect. I then switched to the Sadowsky...dead quiet. So this clearly seems to be an issue of poor sheilding of cavities etc? I've no doubt that the 2 fenders are as badly shielded as the day I bought them and nothing has changed there. The thing is I never noticed this before so either: My GS112's didn't do it, or made it sound a lot less (but I don't recall it happening before with the TC cabs either so seems unlikely) My RH450 has developed a problem, which seems unlikely as the Sadowsky is nice and quiet Having just moved house, maybe it's an environmental effect - bad wiring etc Any thoughts? I'm thinking of moving the whole rig to a different room to see if it has an effect. It's frustrating as I almost get the impression that the Fenders always had crappy sheilding but it never caused an issue until now...(oh and I just sold my GS cabs so can't A/B them) J
Again? Good luck with the sale. Everyone knows these cabs are a good set-up. I hope your new house is as nice as the last one!
Thanks mate, I'll be dropping these with Dave tomorrow so he can give them a try. The new house is bigger, much bigger!
Brand new set of unused La Bella's which I'd like to trade/swap for a set of chrome or nickel flat wound strings; Pyramid Golds would be good and pref in 40-100 gauge... long shot but worth a try.
Hiya, I've got some pyramid gold flats I'm not using - I'm up for a swap if you fancy. Not sure I have a use for the la bella's immediately but maybe more long term I will. Jas

Well, I guess it's time to make a commitment and I've decided to give the TC electronics cabs a good trial meaning I'd like to reluctantly move on this pair of Aggy cabs. I've been holding onto them as I was unsure if I could part with them, but I figure I can always get some more (like I did last time!) Pictures will follow when I'm able, but having just moved house I've only just got broadband at home as of today (assuming it works when I get home) and I only have a vague idea which box my camera is hiding in. They are in great condition and both have the proper padded Aguilar covers which are about £50 each. Collection is obviously preferred due to size/weight or a meet up might be possible depending on the timing. RRP on this lot would be about £960, so I'm looking for... £285 for the GS112+cover £260 for the GS112NT+cover or £525 for the pair

I owned one of those GK MB150 combos for a while and thought it had a beautiful rounded tone - loved it. It couldnt handle any serious volume though so it had to go. Might be worth a listen Chris, assuming you haven't already owned 3?
Well 'good' or 'bad' sound is a very subjective thing. I don't particularly like the P bass tone when played solo but think they sound amazing in many band situations as an example. All I am really saying is that after gigging and recording with a Sadowsky a lot the tone I got in the mix was magnificent. Just for the record I haven't got a Sadowksy at the moment but was just trying to explain one possibility as to why they are popular with a lot of people. There are other basses that do the same things just as well its all down to what you want personally.
Not that I want to get dragged into the whole debate but I've felt this way about my NYC...noodling at home it sounds nice enough, but live and loud it has always sounded amazing. I'm not purporting to know why, just relating my experience.

TC Electronics : 450 combo , RH450 +112 or 210 or BG500
Legion replied to Bassdude BE's topic in Amps and Cabs
so after reading this i might conclude the RS 210 is the best option?? i can buy only one cab at first ,but after a few months i will probably be able to buy a second one to get that nice & compact stack verybody seems to be so positive about... (The 112's do have the new upgraded finish though so a cover is not as important anymore as it would be with the older cabs)
If you are going to aim for 2 cabs eventually then you have all the options available. Personally though I think you should consider RS210+RS212 or RS210+RS210. I'm leaving the RS112 out as although it's very nice I really like that vertical stack thing and the RS112 is not really high enough to get you there. The new finish is better as you say, but I'd still strongly recommend a cover. -
TC Electronics : 450 combo , RH450 +112 or 210 or BG500
Legion replied to Bassdude BE's topic in Amps and Cabs
Love the head. Wasn't sure about the cabs for a while though. I've always thought I prefered 12's but having tried the RS212 which I liked, I realised it wasn't quite giving me the headroom I needed and I would need another cab to release the full wattage. That would have probably meant getting an RS112 brand new, which is pricey and they still don't seem to make a cover for them (essential IMO for the finish on these cabs). I tried the RS212+RS112 rig in the shop for a bit and it was very nice, but I know I would often struggle to position that rig without being up against a wall and that slightly shallower RS210 makes a fair difference. So fast forward a few weeks...I sold the RS212 and ended up with the RS210C and an RS210. So far I really like it, the RS210 on its own sounds nice and the pair stacked vertically almost sounds unreal as I can hear myself so well. I think the combo450 is just a luxury really, having the RH450 and an RS210 is pretty much as good as it gets. The little niggles on the combo450 are easily sorted though, I've fitted some rubber feet and fixed the little rubber stops for the trolley so it can't rub the cab finish anymore. I guess if I could only have one cab the RS212 would have been my choice...but being able to get 2 cabs I think I prefer 2xRS210's, and having 2 of the full size cabs is what you need to really get that vertical stack that you can hear so clearly. -
Oh, sorry, mate. I think I misunderstood you, then. Didn't mean to be rude, BTW. I hope you didn't take it that way
None taken AC are lovely basses, I'm just saying that like all basses - there are good ones, and there are great ones!
-
I wouldn't necessarily conclude that you have tried an 'off-day' bass. Different players like different basses. Personally, I have had just about all the high-end 'jazz-on-steroids' you could think of: AC, Celinder, Sadowsky (NYC, Tokyo, Metro), Atelier Z, Fender Marcus Miller V, etc. In my book, both AC and Celinder outperforms any Sadowsky or Atelier Z I have ever tried. But that is just MY opinion - not the truth
I'm commenting on my opinion thats all. I expected better, I can conclude that on quality of construction (not tone, or feel) that it is not good enough, thats what I meant about an "off-day". I don't expect tone or feel to be universal.
The AC shocked me today, i was very impressed with it and can confirm the Hype makes sense.
I was kindly loaned a very expensive AC to trial and I've decided I won't be buying it, it doesn't meet my expectations. It's a shame because although it's certainly a very nice bass it's just not good enough for the price. $ for $ my used but immaculate Sadowsky NYC is better. It is "slightly" better than my Pino, but that cost less than half the AC and difference is only that the neck profile is a tiny bit nicer on the AC. That's not the conclusion I wanted to come to, but thats how it worked out. I guess even Jimmy has off days.

I think the concept is great, and it's an honourable goal but don't railroad yourself into only AC basses. The hype can be hard to live up to if you set expectations too high.

Maybe if you want to get both sounds in one package (and with a slim neck) something like this would fit the bill? Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass

Bass players who play both "guitar" and keyboard bass
Legion replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
I started playing a synth bass keyboard some time ago - I found it gave a really refreshing approach to my input into songs. I use both in a live situation and wouldnt go back to just the bass guitar. I had, and still have zero keyboard skills really but I get by and love the extra layer it can add to songs. Just bought a Microkorg XL actually, might retire my Novation Bass Station. -
I've just bought a TC RS210C cab from AJ. All went very smoothly and was a pleasure to deal with, nicely packed item with a free T-Shirt! J
That's very kind of you! - Predator Country, good ole Naaaarfulk! - See, as a Predator, the pickings are easy up here ;o) nomm nommm! - Might be a bit far away at the moment. However, if the local Bass Bash happens, then mebbe we'll have an opportunity to give it a whirl!
Dood, if you get bored and fancy a trek southwards to "Mongland" as my cockney friend Dennis used to call it (or Suffolk to the rest of us) your're welcome to pop round and have a blast.
