Although I have little time to practice on my double bass lately I'd love to put some decent strings on it, so count me as interested Have a price in mind? J

Personally I had always used flats on my fretless stingray as I preferred the tone. But having spent a lot of time with Precision type basses lately I'm moving towards rounds as just winding the tone off on a P bass pretty much gives you a reasonable imitation. That said though, like a lot of people I have flats on my fretted P bass and rounds on my fretless (I figure its got an ebony board for a reason so I might as well make the most of it). As WoT says there will be some superficial scuffing if you have rounds on for even a small amount of time, but I wholeheartedly suggest trying both flats and rounds to see which you prefer...and then keep the other strings because I bet you'll change your mind sometime down the line like we all do J

Thanks, having turned totally sad I could just sit about looking at it all day... Bought it on ebay from Japan, got to heathrow in 2 days then sat with customs for ages *pfft* Hmm Yoshie is a good one, girlfriend is nodding about that one - guess it goes on the shortlist
Wow Fab looking bass. Where did you get it? Names; How about Yoshie or Akiko after the bass players in the 5678's ?
...you know the song Well I succumbed to another moment of impulse whilst at work on a weekend ( erm..looking at the internet during lunch of course! ) and bought myself a CIJ 70's reissue precision bass. I just can't bring myself to take my '74 precision to regular rehearsals and gigs so I found a bass that looked pretty much exactly the same and weighed in at a decidedly light 8lbs! Although this sort of goes against my principles, but I'm testing out a moment of being sensible. I'm very impressed with the bass so far, great quality and and lovely to play - the only things I can't seem to decide are if I should keep the TI flats on it or pop some rounds on and whether or not to try a pickup change. Decisions decisions eh. I guess sticking to tradition I ought to name it... hmm...some sort of Japanese womens name - any thoughts?

You can use parcelforce to Norway no problem (I've done it myself) - but you need to be aware that there is a sort of customs declaration form to fill in as it's outside the EU and the poor recipient is likely to get hit with a 25% tax bill. J

I've always loved the look of Warwicks but as soon as I pick one up I hate the neck - just can't seem to get on with them...the Warwick experts here all seem to suggest that the necks on the older ones are much better though. Whereabouts in the country are you? this would have to be one I'd like to try before buying J

I've had a recent experience myself recently. I was taking the precision to rehearsals and all was going fine, but then the other day I had a sort of revelation with my old stingray and decided to take it to rehearal instead. There were all sorts of subtleties about it that I was excited about... Needless to say at full volume against a drummer they all dissapeared and I really missed that thumping sound. Back to the P
ohhh....if you ever want to sell the white one then PLEASE contact me first....I miss her so!
Don't worry mate, you will always be first in line if Kylie goes to the chopping block. She seems to be turning into my main gigging bass as I dare not take the '74 out at the moment so don't think she will go anywhere very soon though :/

I recently bought 2 basses back via international flights and had both brought on the plane as hand luggage, one by myself on an American Airlines flight - the other by a colleague on a British Airways flight. They were both in hard cases as well, not gig bags. Neither of those flights were first class or anything and in both cases it was a breeze, no problems at all. Be nice and courteous to the boarding staff and cabin crew and all seems to go well. This was in Dec 2007 by the way so not long ago or anything. I know that contradicts the experience others have related here. maybe I was lucky? But that would be my suggestion. J

I used to take just one of my two GS112 cabs to practice and it performs surprisingly well - especially considering that the drummer is the hard rock 4/4 type who doesnt know the meaning of "soft". In fact he was the one who remarked how good it sounded. Most of the time I think the tweeter isnt needed for the sound that I want, but considering its very little extra money and you can turn it down if you want I'd say get one with it so you have the option. I dont use distortion other than messing about at home, but the Aguilars seem to handle a Zoom Ultra Fuzz at moderate volume without a problem. Only difference is I'm using mine with a Markbass LMK (so 300W into 8ohm) which does feel like a good match - no idea how well the Hartke would drive it. Bit of food for thought... J

Thanks - Yea I did see your posts about the Tony Franklin you had, and to be honest it was an influencing factor in me seeking one out to try for myself. So even though you no longer have one, you did keep the idea alive ...bearing in mind GAS seems to get the better of us all around here, you never know you might have a chance at replacing it (then it can be my turn to be the idiot!)

Well spotted What would normally be the tone knob is the blend, the tone is stacked with the volume. I had bought another stacked pot with the intention of setting it up as vol/tone vol/tone but then realised I have no idea how to do that and haven't got around to looking into it...

It's a nice sunny day and I'm not at work so I've been tinkering with my basses doing a little setting up and cleaning (not so much playing mind you). Thought I would take a couple of photos to record my bass-stable. First up is a very very clean 1974 Precision I picked up from the states, was supposed to be a 1973 which I had my doubts about but on taking the neck off it confirmed it as 1974, even though its got the long G intonation screw and 73 pots. Seems to be par for the course for Fender back then (big thanks to Jim "99ster" for his knowledgeable input). It sounds great and is a very balanced sort of weight, at 8.4lbs. Not exactly sure what I'm intending for this bass yet - I love it to bits but not sure I dare take it out just noticed a little picture of me in the ashtray, classic photo error! Next was something I just couldn't resist when my boss went to the USA recently - I tried one in Mannys at NYC and regreted not bringing it home with me. Has been a bit weird to get used to, but I am seriously enjoying this thing now. Theres just something special about it, it seems to sing out those notes - lightest bass I've got at 8.2lbs. Next one you might well have seen before. It belonged to our very own Beedster here on Basschat, and Carlosfandango before that. I had a bit of a struggle getting her setup to suit me, but in the end the original bridge went back on along with some TI jazz flats and it all fell into place. Hugely versatile bass, so easy to just pick up and play. Bit fatter than the others at 9.4lbs Hope you all enjoy a little peek. I only wish I could play these things well enough to do them justice...I tell myself it's a lifelong path, so no hurry Jas
has the '89 in the pics got piezo's in the bridge or sumthin'? What're the small round 'knobs' on the front of the bridge?
They are the string mutes, an old and now long abandoned mechanism that died a death for Health & Safety reasons because some people managed to cut their fingers on them. You can buy aftermarket mute mechanisms to fit to all basses and the older precisions had a lump of foam under the bridge cover that gave a similair effect. To be honest I rarely use them myself, but hey its nice to have them all the same
