1. Long story short and all that... I'll be going to the USA for a business trip in November with the destination of Pittsburgh PA - however I can fly via New York/Chicago/Boston/Washington ( which is nice! ) I seriously want to take advantage of this little trip to purchase something really nice, but as I'm in bass-crisis-mode right now and am not sure what it is I'm looking for I really want to find somewhere where I can sit and try out a large range of basses. Maybe I should just do this in the UK before I go and order something online whilst in the US? Otherwise I'm struggling with information overload on actually locating somewhere in the US that holds a large stock of basses to check out ( gbase.com throws up so much stuff it's silly ) Anybody else been in a similar situation or have any good advice on large stores like Guitar Centre etc? Thanks J
  2. EDIT/UPDATE: not just a feeler anymore I've had a think about this and decided that I really want to make an effort to control my impulses and thin my basses down to a Stingray, a Precision and a Jazz of some sort. Seeing as I have 3 stingrays right now that means 2 will have to leave my grubby mitts. So this lovely fretless will end up going to ebay if nobody here thinks they like the price. The DOB info confirmed by E.B is "32855 - June 14, 1991 Honeyburst, ash body, shipped to Germany". I picked this up in an impulsive whirl and just cant really justify buying another bass until I move this on, it's in amazing condition with no issues whatsoever - just a little bit of fingerboard wear due to some rounds ( not me I hasten to add ) and the colour is very very nice imo, especially as they all seem to come out a little bit different. Offers around £750 would be ideal, but it seems the market for guitars is pretty low at the moment...so lets see. A couple of BC'ers have made me some very reasonable offers to trade but maybe they just didnt have the right bait J
  3. Gavs site is good for information and approximate dating but if you want to research a specific serial number you can also post on this thread: http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-...r-database.html And the very helpful Dan (5stringer) will dig out the exact information detailing how the bass was when it left the factory and where it went. Good luck with the hunt I just got a call from my girlfriend that my newly aquired stingray has been delivered to her office (cant resist the urge to post a picture later, got the most amazing birdseye maple neck I've seen) J
  4. Just dropped it off at the shop and having had another listen in the peace and quiet there I suddenly realised that maybe I've done exactly what I was expecting - maybe the core to the E string has broken having been strung thru-body. Will have to see what he finds when I pick up in a week or two.
Yes I tightened the truss rod, although it felt rather resistant to being tightened even with the strings loose which was a little worrying.
5. Yes I tightened the truss rod, although it felt rather resistant to being tightened even with the strings loose which was a little worrying.
Did you just adjust the action at the bridge? The reason the action went higher is because there was more tension pulling on the neck, so you should have tighened the truss rod first to set the relief correctly, then made any nesessary height adjustments at the bridge and nut if necessary.
6. Interesting link thanks. Pretty much the same gauge as I have fitted so maybe this will wreck the strings in time - only one way to find out
I use TI flats and have no trouble with thru stringing even on the low "B" of a 5 string, however LaBella recommend not to with their strings. here: http://www.juststrings.com/lab-0760m.html However, despite that I have used a medium guage short scale set of LaBella Deep Talkin' flats on a thru-strung with no problems.
7. That same thought was in my mind - I decided to go for it and fitted the strings to see how they coped. All seems OK for now, the ribbon on the E string looks a little stressed out where it runs over the saddle but hasnt actually split or anything so I'll see how they stand up to some extended use. Unfortunately with them being monster strings it pulled the neck a bit and put the action rather high, so I tried to correct it but seem to have been left with a buzz on only the open E string. Was going to drop it off with a local guitar chap to fit the new pot so I get a V/T & V/T instead of the V/T & Pan that I have now so I think I'll get him to take a look while I'm on holiday. Will update this if the string starts to fall apart. J
Considering that the original 1951 P-Bass was designed for through-body-stringing and only flats were available at the time, I´d say go for it.
8. What are peoples thoughts and experiences of putting flatwounds on a bass thats string through body design? I've got some meaty ones ( personally I just can't get on with TI's ) so I like cables, but I don't know if it will cause damage to the strings to tension them up with that massive angle where they exit the body to the saddle. J
  9. Just couldnt resist a nice price, itching for the P-bass to arrive now, lovely looking thing Pity I'm on holiday for a week just after it gets here - hmm maybe I can play it by the pool... Cheers Chris ( and don't forgot to let me know what the postage amounts to ) J
