Pete Wentz Squier for £1800 anyone?
Dad3353 replied to Richard Jinman's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
[Mod's hat on] Please refrain from posting ads from other selling sites; they do not reciprocate in posting links to the Basschat Marketplace. Please keep to the narrow spirit of truly 'weird and wonderful' when posting in this topic, not simply any 'interesting' bass for sale. Thanks in advance for your comprehension and cooperation. [/Mod's hat on] -
When approaching a venue (pub, festival, whatever...) the first sounds you'll hear are the bass, almost without exception. Being heard is one thing, being overly prominent is quite another. I wouldn't like to assist at a Schubert concert in which the trombones took over the phonic spectrum. They're there, all right, but in their place, as bass.

We play quite a varied repertoire of pop/rock covers; Our Youngest on bass uses the same tone throughout, and it fits well. He adjusts slightly (fingers only, fretless sixer...), but that's all, plugged straight into our Hiwatt 200w valve PA head. Quite different from studio stuff, recording; for 'live' work any attack from a bass is only really present in its immediate vicinity. Once moved to the back of the hall, or off-axis, it's the bass tone that is present. Personally I'm of the opinion that there is much 'precious' about one's tone. Does the drummer tune snare and toms differently for each number..? Not really, although in the studio, it may take a day to decide which snare best fits the role. We all have different ears, tastes and experience, but, to me, bass is bass is bass, really. Disclaimer : I'm a drummer (and no, I don't swap snares between numbers. Drums is drums is drums...)

I suppose, following this 'logic', synth players should be replaced by string and brass sections, maybe choirs, too..? A very high percentage of what I compose is done using virtual instruments, including bass. It's well beyond my skills to actually play the bass lines I write. I'm a drummer; I use drum software more than I play acoustic or e-drums. Welcome to the twenty-first century. Bach, Mozart and Schubert would have loved it..!

Fretless Yamaha action. Livingston area.
Dad3353 replied to weepaul's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Sorry, Spock, but you don't see what gets deleted, and 'discussions' have been had with members who repeatedly post links of the sort. We're not stoopid about it, and some get posted, but it's not a habit that the Admins want perpetuated. The idea behind the BC Marketplace is to have members buying and selling here. It's not really any more complicated than that. It's not wanted, having members hived off. Yes, the best deals, both buying and selling, are here, obviously, but it would be better if those wishing to buy or sell come here to do so. That's in the interests of the BC 'community', and that's what is promoted. One doesn't see adverts for Kentucky Whatsits in the MacDo shops. It's simple really. -

It's really quite simple, and relatively obvious : it doesn't help the Basschat Marketplace to have 'business' driven away or guided to other Marketplace sites. They don't have links to Basschat; why should Basschat help them shift stuff..? Not quite the same for the 'weird and wonderful' posts allowed, as they are, in principle, by their nature, not the sort of thing you'd find for sale here. That's about it, really; bring attention to what's in the Marketplace, and not to the 'competitor' sites. You know it makes sense. -
The very reason for this 'returns' policy being a legal right is that you've not had the opportunity to try the item for yourself before purchase, as one would in a 'bricks'n'mortar' shop. It's at the heart of on-line purchasing, and its cost is factored into the business model of outlets with a web presence. No need to explain why it's unsuitable, and no 'fault' is needed; it just doesn't fit your needs once you've had the item in your hands. The principle applies to all web shops; some are better at respecting it than others, so a reputable outlet would be a safer option. You don't have this option from a visit to a 'real' shop; once purchased there, it's yours, unless faulty. Hope this helps.

Musicman stingray 5 neck relief / higher action
Dad3353 replied to Delamitri79's topic in General Discussion
And there's all theses luthiers, engineers and experts working their socks off to get good-sounding, reliable musical instruments, only for it all to be reduced to 'clank', 'mush' and distortion..! S'a funny ol' world..! ... -

Foxholes have existed in France ever since foxes, and still abound to this day. Just sayin'. ...

So we agree, then, essentially; it's all Good, whether heavy this or classic that, or even Variety (the Spice of Life, after all, no..?)

Musicman stingray 5 neck relief / higher action
Dad3353 replied to Delamitri79's topic in General Discussion
The benefits of a low action are speed and muscle efficiency; if such performance is not a criteria, a pure tone with no interference from the neck is easier to obtain with higher action. Taken to the extreme, of course, the instrument becomes difficult to play, but 'as low as possible' does not suit everyone's purposes. I play a Hofner Verithin, with 'Trubass' black nylon-coated strings. No slapping or popping (I wouldn't know how...), and melodic playing, or blues- or jazz-style walking bass lines are more my cup of tea (Mmm... Tea..!). I always want a clear tone, no 'dirt', no Fx, just straight into a Hiwatt 200w valve PA amp, that's all. Too low an action would hamper what little ability I have, and speed is certainly not of the essence for me. I'm not a 'pro' player, being asked to play the latest hits; I play whatever I feel inspired to play, and the set-up of the bass gives me that 'inspiration'. -
How about Magma, then..? Are they metal..? Or Einstürzende Neubauten, perhaps..? It's the idolatry that I find odd, trying to 'defend' a very niche part of a world-wide and multi-century universe of Music. It just seems, to me, to be so daft, just listening through such a narrow letter-box when there is soooooo much more out there. OK, there's some maybe slightly less good, but still... There's Great Music in all genres, some more than others, but only slightly so.

Well, if we're allowed to talk music, there's always him (and a few others...), naturally. Is Tchaikovsky 'heavy'..? (Answer : sometimes..!)

No idea who this is/was, so looked it up. Not sure how/where/why to classify it/them, but I'd prefer a concert like this over any of the heavy metal riff-raff I've seen posted so far. YMMV, of course, but musically speaking, there's just no match. The fellow can sing, which is a plus.

... and such wonderful drumming.

@Monarch : I've Reported your post ^^; we'll see if the Mods/Admins can help at all. Patience, please..?

I can just imagine the dance steps behind the toms. He/she has little else to do.

Really glad to not be the drummer for that lot. ...

Well, there's a relief..! For a while I thought I was needing to prevent WWIII.

Ahem... I'm pretty sure that the reply given was in the spirit of humorous sarcasm, but lacked the necessary Smiley to that effect. Peace. ... and breath ...
