  1. Good evening, Moe, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. (... but you knew that anyway, didn't you..? )
  2. Good morning, Arjan, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  3. Good evening, Carlos, and welcome to the Forum... Firstly, there is nothing wrong with your bass; changing it for another will do nothing but empty your purse, so forget that, for now. Secondly, please give your location; it helps to know what resources you may have not far from you. Are you playing through an amp..? Is there any chance of spending just a little of your budget on a couple of lessons with a bass tutor (a real one, not a guitar/bass tutor, preferably...)..? What style of music are you wanting to play (any bands or players you are influenced by..?...). Have you any bass method books..? The 'standard' 'best buy' recommendation is ... ...the Ultimate Bass Method for beginners, at an unbeatable price. Spiral-bound, so lays flat, and three (yes, three..!) methods in one, to take any player to the level they want to achieve. Highly recommended. Go on; spoil yourself. You know it makes sense... Amazon.co.uk : Hal Leonards Bass Method... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hal-Leonard-Bass-Method-Complete/dp/0793563836/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Hal+Leonard+Bass+Method&qid=1620574154&sr=8-1 Worth a look..?
  4. It's for fun, and a dumb example of ambiguity. What 'real' information does a headstock label convey..? In this case, is it to indicate that it's my bass..? Or did I make it..? Or is the maker's name Douglas..? Is it just a commercial label..? Is that 'Douglas', under any guise, playing in that photo..? Anyone drawing conclusions from what is written on any headstock is solely responsable for their conclusions. 'Real'..? 'Fake'..? It's for the onlooker to make anything of it, or nothing at all. For my part, it's 'Nothing at all'; it has no bearing on the qualities, good or bad, of the instrument. It adds, nor detracts, 'value' except that accorded by the onlooker. "A rose, by any other name..."
  5. This is my sixer fretless. It says 'Douglas' on the headstock... Disclaimer : I didn't make this bass. Should I scrub the name off..?
  6. What's in a name..? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet...
  7. Caveat emptor applies concerning the buying of second-hand basses, as with second-hand anything, and, to me (a drummer...) a fine bass is a fine bass, whatever it says on the headstock. I'd want to pay for its intrinsic qualities, and not for a label (for me, that's 'Hofner'; I'd buy a fake if it played and sounded good, but wouldn't pay more for original provenance...). Marketing a 'knock-off' industrially is a different issue, whereby there is a cold effort made to actually cheat the customer. This applies to all counterfeit, but I've never understood the appeal of Gucci handbags or Rolex watches, and wouldn't want either, at any price, real or fake. When folk pay well below the 'real' price, they know it's a fake, and, as far as I'm concerned, wouldn't have bought a 'real' one anyway, so there's no loss of sales to the 'real' producer. If folk want to act 'bling' in that way, I don't really care; it's just sad. Folk paying top dollar for what turns out to be a fake are not being careful enough in their research or checks. How many 'real' paintings have turned out to be fakes, even in art galleries..? To me, this simply shows up the ridiculous 'investment' prices policy, and I seldom shed a tear. A fake Fender..? To me, a bass is a bass, and its value is how it plays and sounds, but it's not 'right' to palm one off for what it's not. If it fools some folk, it's hard cheese, I'd say.
  8. Thanks. The backing track makes all the difference; sock it to 'em..!
  9. Good evening, Pablo, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. (... but please read the Terms & Conditions, linked below in my Signature...)
  10. Hmm... Disturbing, and some doubts. Upon consulting the Wiki pages, I see the date of the UK release in the cinemas as late '76. I was already in France by then, and could not have seen the film in the UK after that date. I was, however, living in Shepperton up till then, and extra scenes were filmed at the studios, where I worked for a time ('74...). How did I get to see the film, certainly in the UK, and at which cinema..? There's a thin veil over such details, but I'm very surprised by these dates. WHAT IS GOING ON..?
  11. Understood, and I'm sure it'll be fine, but it seemed a bit tame as a bass part, played solo without the band around it. Ignore if inappropriate, of course.
  12. Is this 'performance piece' to be played solo, or with a backing track..? Unknown to me, and quite respectable in the RATM context, upon listening it through it didn't strike me as a great piece for solo bass. I could be wrong (it happened before, in 1957, I think...), but could you reassure me that this is, in fact, the type of number they're expecting from you for the audition..?
  13. The reading of these two posts, in quick succession, gave me a start. Luckily, I read on, and all was revealed, but still...
  14. Most humble apologies, O Great master..! Senior Moment of Madness; it won't happen again. (although it's just as far from Bristol..! At least I got the country right..! )
  15. One of our experts in this field is @KiOgon, based (I believe...) in Cambridge. See if he can help you..? Good luck with the project.
  16. Good evening, Bruce, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. A tale of woe indeed; commiserations. It won't help you much to know that I'm in a similar state (minus the head injury...), and still play bass, drums, keys and guitar, mostly for my own pleasure, but occasionally when our group is invited to perform for a local event. I'm drifting towards 71 next birthday, and it's very unlikely that all the gear collected over more than half a century get used in public in earnest. The increasing deafness, and associated increasing tinnitus is being partially compensated for by becoming more blasé about it all. I still remember my favourite music (Schubert, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, Bruckner, Bowie etc...), so I've had a good run. My gear is 'old school', so will be worth more in another century or so as collector stuff, being very much out of fashion, but as I never acquired any of it with a view to invest, I care not a jot. I have the space to keep it all, and a room to play it when I want, so... Gardening is very much over-rated as a retirement occupation, too, I've found. Keen, for decades, but unable now to dig more than a metre or two, obliged to do weeding lying down, relying on a (very excellent...) chum for mowing etc... I keep it to the most simple expression (see the 'Gardening' section here; there are several others doing their best...). What else can you do..? Exactly that : do your best, as do we all..! Life gives you lemons..? Make lemonade..! Set low targets and goals and you'll not disappoint yourself; in fact you'll be surprised how often you exceed them..! Chin up and soldier on. Douglas
  17. I gave it 1:15; I really don't see the interest at all. (Disclaimer, I'm an old grump, and could never dance for toffee even when young ...).
  18. The Standard Basschat Remedy is called for, here; please accept a Bouquet (but get studying, even though it's all easy, really...).
  19. He could be playing my Hofner Verithin, and maybe even with his toes, he'd still sound splendid. Top Fellow, in my book, and with, apparently, very little 'side'.
