  1. Good afternoon, BB, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  2. Any drummer getting bored with 'four on the floor' could do worse than having a look at Zappa's 'Black Page' (1 & 2...). Ably demonstrated here, it's all written, to be played as written. The title 'Black Page' comes from the graphic appearance of the drum score...
  3. How about Genesys 'Watcher Of The Skies'..? The time signature jumps about a fair bit; one would have trouble nailing it down to any 'simple' signature... (The stick twirling is optional ...)
  4. Maybe listen to other stuff, and work out what's going on..? Try searching for MIDI bass parts, and see how they're constructed..? I have some ToonTrack stuff, such as EZPlayer, which has a ton of parts to look at, study or just filch..! Look at some classical music, too; how are the bass instruments fitting into the composition..? Need any more..?
  5. To me (a drummer...), 9/8 doesn't impose any grouping per se, but it could well be written that way, and often is. It could also be simply un-accented 9 beats, with no inherent grouping at all and would still be 9/8. It is often more 'readable' to write each part in its own time signature, though, and have alternating bars of 3/4 and 3/8 in the example you give. Some would write as 4/4-5/4, too, instead of 9/4; the difference really is in the intention of the composer rather than any strict 'theory' or 'rules'. I'll have a lait-fraise if you're buying...
  6. Good afternoon, Larko, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  7. There's a fair bit of Frank Zappa's long catalogue that has all sorts of oddness grafted in. As an opening sampler, a listen to 'Sheik Yerbouti' should awaken any drummer's interest, I'd say.
  8. Sound Garden : The Day I Tried To Live Muse : Hysteria System Of A Down : Toxicity These are non-prog rock songs good for keeping drummers (and singers...) interested, maybe..? They go down very well to discerning audiences, too; they're part of our repertoire.
  9. He's forcing a slower 2/4 against the 'normal' 4/4 beat, creating a polyrhythm. A similar effect can be heard in the last few bars of SOAD's 'Toxicity', where the bass drum punches out a cross-rhythm in the same way.
  10. Good evening, WB, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  11. The video is perfectly visible, and plays fine, on my humble PC, Windows 10. I have an ad blocker; it doesn't bother this video. I don't have a Facebook account, so can't log into that (and wouldn't if I had one...). Must be another reason if it's not there.
  12. Yes; if it's unexpected it can disturb, until one gets the hang of it. Reggae beats are often away from the one (the 'One Drop' being perhaps the most evident...). It's only really in recent times, musically, that the 'Two-Four' downbeat has become so ingrained. I blame Mr. Presley and Co.
  13. It's the old Ginger Baker 'Sunshine Of Your Love' trick, playing snare on the 'One'.
  14. Whilst it's sadly true that I have absolutely no 'taste' when it comes to design, aesthetics et al, if I had to vote on an 'Ugliest Bass Of The Year' award, the one linked to in the OP would be a hot contender. I don't think that I could be classed as a 'purist', or especially conservative, but that thing, even just as a photo, looks bad; under home or (heaven forbid..!) stage lights, I just can't imagine anyone being serious or keeping a straight face. Best kept in its custom case, I say, lid firmly closed, maybe soundly sealed and padlocked, to prevent accidents.
  15. Danny Thompson, 'Live at Crawley', with Richard Thompson.
  16. Jack Casady on 'Bless Its Pointed Little Head'...
  17. Good evening, Alfie, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. (But you knew all that anyway, didn't you..? )
  18. Very nice. The dark green one, please.
  19. Just as soon as that Bentley I'm still waiting for arrives, Boss.
  20. Good evening, Johnny, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
