    Mixing

This is a good source of information concerning mixing ... Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio - Additional Resources ... Personally, I'm not so concerned with the room acoustic aspect, as it's very difficult to get decent results, especially for cloth ears such as mine. Instead, I bank on 'comparative' acoustics, whereby I listen to stuff I like in the room I have (or with my headset...), and compare my mixes to that. Any major flaws will be common to both sessions, so should cancel out, hopefully. Not perfect, but I'm not disposed to set up a 'pro' studio with my budget and modest needs. On the site linked above there are scores of stem tracks to have a go at, and test one's skills and inspiration, all for free. Recommended to get a feel for what works and what works less well. I wouldn't use Audacity for long for mixing, although it's very good, and I use it a lot for other stuff. A full-fat DAW is what is required (I use Reaper; there are plenty of others, from free to very expensive...). Enough space on your hard-drive, and a means of easily and regularly making back-ups is essential if you're doing stuff for others. 'Losing' that masterpiece is a Bad Idea. Again, doesn't have to be expensive, but must become part of the routine, preferably before the inevitable crash, rather than later. Hope this helps.
  4. By 'width', I meant the width between the frets; some capos would be too wide to fit between the frets above the octave, maybe earlier, just by the fret spacing reducing as one goes up the neck. Of course, I do realise that many bass players are unaware of this, having never dared to go past the fifth fret. ...
  5. Elixir nanoweb strings for me, too, for bass and guitar (except for the Vreithin bass, with Trubass black nylons...). If anyone can feel the Elixir nanoweb coating, they have very, very delicate fingers, in my experience.
  6. Drap a cloth over the bass (cheesecloth or similar works well...)..?
  7. The width of some capos would preclude this on many guitars; probably less of an issue with a 34" bass neck.
  8. Late '60s I attended a buddy's wedding reception where green cakes were served. I don't remember anything about capos, though. Happy daze.
  9. Good evening, Patrick, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  10. Insisting. That's the third time I've fixed the link..! No, I don't know what you're doing (are you using one of these newfangled ipoddyphones or summit..?). I just take the 'Share' link from Youtube and paste it in and it works, so what would I know..?
  11. Good afternoon, GJ, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  12. Not least for the memory required to keep all that on track..! Sublime technique. Disclaimer : I'm not a fan of 'showman' technique in general, but that ^^ really is excellent.

  15. Sorry, but this is not for me. It contains almost every ingredient I abhor in Big Beat disco stuff. I didn't make it to three minutes. Never mind, others will surely appreciate it.
  16. None of these things are an issue if all participants are free of the virus, Shirley..? Are there not tests, now, to indicate if one is infected or not..? Then there's the hand-washing, alcohol gel, face mask stuff; don't these protect folks that have to work together..? How many of the situations mentioned keep people close for 15 minutes or more..? Not such a big deal, I'd say, although sensible precautions would be in order. Just sayin'.
  17. We've never gone in for this 'Whatever'-Day stuff, and nor did my parents. We do mark birthdays, though, and Christmas (because it's Our Daughter's birthday..! ). I'm too old to bother now with any of it, and don't miss what we never had.
  18. I've been using Reaper for many years now, on rather light-weight hardware (Intel i5-2500 PC, Windows 10 Pro, 12 Gb ram...), and have stuffed it pretty full of orchestral instruments, or several (read 'many'...) Kontakt instances, up to 32 treated drum tracks and much more, and wouldn't use it if it crashed. If Reaper is crashing, maybe another DAW would, too..? Post your issues here, or on the Cockos 'Reaper' forum and get them aired, at least. Solutions may well be not far away... Just sayin'; hope this helps.
  19. Remember..? Remember what..? And speak up, man; at my age, hearing's not what it was..! Where's my slippers..? ...
  20. Good evening, BB, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. 70th year, eh..? Snap..!
  21. Look up 'Jimmy Smith', maybe..? Or Brian Auger, for a bit more modern approach..? Georgie Fame wasn't off-topic, either. Rhoda Scott is Quality. There are more, many more...
  22. To me, insurance is a form of betting. It's laying odds on the transaction going badly, at whatever to one. Sometimes the bet pays off, sometimes the bet is welshed. For my part, I never take out insurance, and have not lost out as a consequence. I'd say that, in general, if the item is of such high value, it's worth a personal delivery. Just my tuppence-worth.
