  1. A tip that may help with longer pieces : start from the end. That's to say : learn the last section, then, when that's going well, learn the preceding section, and follow through to the end. Rinse and repeat. As you move towards the beginning, you're playing more and more into familiar territory. Hope this helps.
  2. I wouldn't want that much bass in the mix (general pop/rock: Bowie, Radiohead, Noir Désir...). Our main bass cab is an HH 2x15 folded horn (weighs as much as a small moon...), driven by a Hiwatt 200w head, with no EQ (tone at 12 o'clock...). We don't play stupidly loud, either (PA is a pair of 15" tops from a mixer/amp head, no subs, for vox, acoustic guitar and keys...). Excess 'low' adds nothing but mush for what we play.
  3. I've no expertise on this, but I'd say that the first hit is setting the level for compression/limiting, which cuts it all down. Given a respite, another 'first hit' would probably do the same thing. I doubt that there's an easy solution, except more sophisticated software, perhaps, but expectations of how it all works over t'web should be low, in any case. Good luck with it, just the same.
  4. There you go; I knew it..! It's Autumn, and Fingers proves it by taking photos from his front door with his Triumph..! Yah..! Boo..! Sucks to you, you false Lurks, you..! Shame on you for trying to fool an old man that he's overslept (or under-slept; I'm not really sure any more...). Where's that nice lady with the pink pills..? Should I put my pyjama trousers back on..? Why is that light always on..? (shuffles off in worn slippers, bumps into armchair and looks with puzzled frown at his shins...)
  5. Who are you..? What have you done with Lurksalot..? If it's a ransom you're after, be aware that I have little of value. I'm calling @fleabag, he'll get this sorted out, double time..! (And if we don't hear from Lurks himself in the next 24 hours, you'll be hearing from @Teebs, so be afraid; be very afraid. )
  6. Good Stuff, Nick, and 'Well Done' for taking this initiative. I've no intention (nor the ability...) of starting a virtual band, but I can see the advantages of sharing stuff well enough (I might have been tempted if our Singer wasn't quite so technophobe, though...). I'll just make one, slightly derogatory, remark concerning Cakewalk. I'll not deny its usefulness nor fitness for purpose for Mortals, but (and now I have to reveal the naked truth and heart of the problem...) I'm old. I followed the link, and 'installed' it. Silly me, thinking it'd install summit on my PC, which I looked for, but couldn't find (obviously; there's nowt...). To get that far, even, I had to 'log in', which wrought more confusion, as the System has better memory than I, and I learned that I had already set this process off in 2018, and have had it available since. Much good it did me at the time, and little more today, as I still don't know how it works. 'Back then', I had apparently managed to 'save' a Project, with a couple of lines of Brass, but when I look a bit closer at it, it fell very far short of features that I currently use through my present DAW on my PC. I'll not go into the pro's and con's of each DAW, but have serious doubts concerning any possibility of me composing through Cakewalk. I'm certain that others manage to do fine work with it, but it seems to need a specific 'mind-set' to be able to do stuff along those lines. Have I any better suggestion..? As a DAW, absolutely, but how effective it would be for this collaborative methodology is outside of my experience, so... Just to say, then, that if this works for you, and others, that's fine, but it may not suite everyone; it's rather 'odd' in its organisation. I may well be alone in this, and perhaps too harsh, so I'll be well pleased if others chip in to totally contradict me, and will humbly accept the heaps of 'that old duffer' I'd rightly deserve in that case. I'll be following along, to see how this goes forward; meanwhile... Keep well, stay safe
  7. What..? Are you trying to tell me that it's no longer Autumn..? What happened..? Where are we now, then..? Have I slept so soundly ..? Serves me right for not owning a watch, of course. What's that..? Watches don't tell the seasons..? Of what possible other use could I have for one, then..? Anyway, the important thing is... Is it safe to come out yet..? Have the waters receded..? What about the Strontium 90 levels..? We were told they'd stay high for ... Well, even longer than that, and that Mother's Milk was already so contaminated as to addle the brains of the next generation or two. Did that happen, then..? Confused, of Norwich.
  8. Here is my contribution to the April 2020 Basschat Composition Challenge, inspired by a picture chosen by the previous winner: Fingers211..! Something a bit jaunty for blowing away the cobwebs of current affairs, with a sort of Gaelic/Celtic bent in there somewhere. Good for dancing to, too, if the fancy takes you. Go on, there's no-one looking. All Kontakt instruments, save the fine Ruby bass. Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.
  9. Would be better posted in GuitarChat, no..?
  10. And the winner is... Fingers211 ..! Here, then, is your Winner's Certificate (download and save as pdf file, then proudly print and frame...) ... BC_Chal_Cert_2020_03.pdf ... which looks like this (but bigger, of course..!)...
  11. Good gear means nowt without good playing to set it off. I thought that all bass players knew that..!
  12. @MoonBassAlpha Some details as to the execution and production of your track, please..? What drums are they..? Who played each part..? Where can I obtain such talent, within my budget, and legally, if possible..? (NB I have no soul to sell, and my kidneys are almost worthless, even to myself, but I'm willing to discuss...) I couldn't change my vote; serves me right for diving in too early, but I would have, honest..!
  13. They're free to take their chances, as long as they sign up..! They probably won't, though, while we have Lenny in there stealing their thunder.
  14. Jack Casady (Hot Tuna..?) ... Why..? A solid grounding in the genre, and great complicity with Jorma, after all the years they've played together. A very versatile player.
  15. Have a look here, maybe..? Vst Bass Amps ... I use Amplitube Custom Shop (the free one...), and Ignite. YMMV
  16. Thanks for that ^^; really refreshing after all these years. Talent..? The fellow had it in spades. RIP. (The video can't be embedded, but the link ^^ works, and it's well worth the watch..!)
  17. Excellent, so thanks for the gesture. To reciprocate, I've ordered it as a hardcopy (I don't have 'Kindles' and such, being old, you see...). Keep well, stay safe
  18. At least..! (Although I have doubts about the 'decent' bit. )
  19. Freudien slip..? No, just a bad case of reading back with 'senior' eyes..! Apologies; it won't hapen again. ...
  20. A big 'thumbs up' on this, and 'Well Done' on at least trying to get a handle on all of it. One is not required to be a working muso to want to get to grips with this, much as one doesn't have to be a pilot to make model 'planes. It's a never-ending subject, with the promise that there'll always be another page to turn. It does become fascinating, I found, once one or two of the pennies 'drop'. For my part, I entertain no hope whatever of ever being able to play even 1% of what I've learnt over the decades, but I still continue to read through stuff well above my pay-grade, and enjoy mentally fitting it all together. Be warned: it's a slippery slope which, if you're not very careful, may, eventually, lead you down that most dangerous of rabbit holes: jazz..!
