Good evening, Julian, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.

Fan to musician - The significance of genre.
Dad3353 replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
I got 'hooked' on the beauty and richness of the music I was listening to (Surrealistic Pillow, Anthem Of The Sun, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Da Capo, Fairport Convention ...), and it was just the right moment to catch the rising crest of the hippy movement. It's remained with me ever since, and is very unlikely to ebb, now. No longer 'fashionable', but then again, I never was, so... -

You mean with ... [Gasp..! ] ... oil wheels, as well..?

A good start, but lacks a lot (triplets, dotted notes, 'skipped' notes, ties...). The full list would be quite horrific, I think..!

Is that you, Mr Trump..? Oh, sorry; I just thought for a moment... ... No, no; let it pass.

How about Marshall amps..? They have a lot of fans, I'm told. ...

Can you get to Manchester and back somehow..? Ashdown rig for sale ... Just sayin'. -
Never mind the blathering, you know the score. Get a good picture sent off to Skol Towers for the next Challenge. In your own time, of course. ... ... ... Are you still here..?

And the winner is... Bleat..! Here, then, is your Winner's Certificate (download and save as pdf file, then proudly print and frame...) ... BC_Chal_Cert_2018_07.pdf ... which looks like this (but bigger, of course..!)...

Dunno what happened there. I've re-opened the Poll, so try again..?

Would going back to Ireland on the ferry not be an option..? I don't think there'd be any problems carrying a bass in a gig bag, along with any other luggage. Just sayin'; may not be relevant.

I've taken on a short-term project which involves actualising a load of 'funk' topics, so I thought I should dress appropriately. It's my 'Bootsy' persona. I may not retain the look once the project is over.

These puns are boring; the're just going rind and rind.

Attempting to make a replacement bridge for my EUB
Dad3353 replied to dazza14's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Oh dear..! That's a shame, after all that hard effort. It's all experience, of course, but still... I'm not an expert in these matters (far from it..!), but I would recommend, if you want to change the bridge, forking out the £70-100 for a bought one, and modifying it to suit. A second-hand one would be even better, from a cost point of view. If you're really set on a DIY version (good on yer..!), try to find a suitable piece of close-grained maple as a blank. It has to be a hard wood (maple is hard, usually...), but also with close fibres, for the reasons illustrated by the break you've now got. It's not an easy task, especially with only modest hand tools; it's not for nothing that these things cost so much..! Good luck, in any case, and thanks for the updates, they're very interesting and instructive. -
Whilst it's true that my needs are rather more modest, and music is not the sole use I put my PC to, I don't really understand all this 'administering' stuff. I just use my PC (a lowly HP8200, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, 12Gb, SSD boot drive, several Tb of USB drives plugged in...). Every few weeks or so, as I'm shutting down, I'll be asked to wait while the System updates, usually a few minutes. That's it. I do nothing else to it. I turn it on of a morning, do what I want to do, including composition, using Reaper. I'm typing this on the same machine; I have no issues, no viruses nor malware, I record my instruments (guitar, bass, keys, mics...) through my Tascam interface with no problems... While it's not the most powerful of processors (i5, 3Ghz or so...), it certainly isn't a sluggard, and copes with as many tracks and Vst's as I need to use, depending on the compo. No, really; no complaints here. The UC cost around £200, refurbished, a few years ago now. Our Youngest has just bought a new i7 tower, fully 'speced', for just under 500€, delivered, which works fine, too. Disclaimer: I spent the last couple of decades of my long career in electronics as Project Manager for several companies in France, specifying and setting up IT systems for their needs, including office and ERP software. I have some inklings of how to set up a System from a security point of view, and what traps and pitfalls to avoid. I may therefore be slightly more 'savvy' than some, but still, I wonder what this 'administration' involves that is so onerous and feared. Maybe I've just always been lucky..?

Wait and see; trust us.

I'll rip it and pop it into Reaper, to see what I can come up with. An exercise; it may work, it may not. Don't wait up... Edit: 7/4 at 150 bpm for the verse. I'll look at the 'chorus' later...

For the main verses, I hear '1 & 2 & 3 & ', and for the refrain, '1 2 3 ', so, except for the intro and odd breaks here and there, I'd say it's basically a waltz, if one was to dance to it.

+1 ^^. I will often take many passes, and even combine bits of each, depending on how the blend fits what I want to hear. That's one of the big advantages of solo recording at home: no 'live' constraints, and one can take the time needed to get the result.
