  1. Whilst it's true that my needs are rather more modest, and music is not the sole use I put my PC to, I don't really understand all this 'administering' stuff. I just use my PC (a lowly HP8200, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, 12Gb, SSD boot drive, several Tb of USB drives plugged in...). Every few weeks or so, as I'm shutting down, I'll be asked to wait while the System updates, usually a few minutes. That's it. I do nothing else to it. I turn it on of a morning, do what I want to do, including composition, using Reaper. I'm typing this on the same machine; I have no issues, no viruses nor malware, I record my instruments (guitar, bass, keys, mics...) through my Tascam interface with no problems... While it's not the most powerful of processors (i5, 3Ghz or so...), it certainly isn't a sluggard, and copes with as many tracks and Vst's as I need to use, depending on the compo. No, really; no complaints here. The UC cost around £200, refurbished, a few years ago now. Our Youngest has just bought a new i7 tower, fully 'speced', for just under 500€, delivered, which works fine, too. Disclaimer: I spent the last couple of decades of my long career in electronics as Project Manager for several companies in France, specifying and setting up IT systems for their needs, including office and ERP software. I have some inklings of how to set up a System from a security point of view, and what traps and pitfalls to avoid. I may therefore be slightly more 'savvy' than some, but still, I wonder what this 'administration' involves that is so onerous and feared. Maybe I've just always been lucky..?
  2. Wait and see; trust us.
  3. I'll rip it and pop it into Reaper, to see what I can come up with. An exercise; it may work, it may not. Don't wait up... Edit: 7/4 at 150 bpm for the verse. I'll look at the 'chorus' later...
  4. For the main verses, I hear '1 & 2 & 3 & ', and for the refrain, '1 2 3 ', so, except for the intro and odd breaks here and there, I'd say it's basically a waltz, if one was to dance to it.
  5. +1 ^^. I will often take many passes, and even combine bits of each, depending on how the blend fits what I want to hear. That's one of the big advantages of solo recording at home: no 'live' constraints, and one can take the time needed to get the result.
  6. You were soled duds, I expect.
  7. Yeah, sure..!
  8. Living examples of the very real dangers that await those attending Basschat Bass Bashes..!

  10. When all done here (but take your time; the pieces are worth it...), you may be interested in voting for the Basschat Photo Competition, to be found here ... Basschat 2018 Photo Competition Voting, July ... The theme, chosen by xgsjx, was 'Water.' Give 'em all a good look; choose the three that best represent the theme, in your view. Thanks in advance
  11. That was what I was afraid of.
  12. Is this another example of the necessity of correct punctuation..? Hmm...
  13. Foderas have crap in them..?
  14. Does this come close to fitting the bill..? Yamaha MM8 ... There's also, in similar fashion, the ... Novation X-station ... They won't have the DAW control stuff, like transport keys, but can pilot any Vst's for recording, and have on-board sounds, too.
  15. It's 'only' a MIDI controller, so no on-board sounds, nor headphone out. Connection to 'anything' is required to hear anything more than the keys being pressed (and they're quiet...).
  16. T'wasn't the booze so much (my tipple is Earl Grey tea, with a twist of lemon...), it was the regular, quality gigs I was appreciating..! Cheers, though; here's to you and yours.
  17. [Peals of laughter all round...]
  18. As mentioned above, an easy enough starting point would be to download Reaper for Windows (free to evaluate, with no restrictions, and inexpensive if you decide to adopt it permanently...). It's easy enough to get Reaper to recognise that keyboard as a MIDI source. To hear anything, you'll want a Vst 'plug-in', which will be easily set up in Reaper. There are literally hundreds out there to choose from; to get at least a piano sound, I'd recommend one called '4 Front Piano', which is free, and ultra-simple to use. One big advantage to a set-up of the sort is that there are many on this forum able to assist with any niggles that crop up, to get it up and running smoothly and quickly. Hope this helps.
  19. ... and you're worth it.
  20. Offers and trade propositions posted in 'For Sale' ads are systematically deleted. They are to be made by Private Message (PM...) only. Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
  21. This is somewhat harsh; there have been, over the decades, thousands of records sold having been recorded on tape, and not a few recorded on cassette tape. All is relative; there is 'noise' involved in pretty well every medium. Is it discernable..? Does it detract..? Does it add something..? Is 'hi-fi' even the goal..? Those questions and others may be relevant.
