  1. The 'Master volume max'd' approach does have the inherent risk of a fault or error somewhere getting through at full volume. We've all heard those nasty thumps and blips (or worse...) from PA systems, where the FOH amps are often set up 'full tilt', and someone unplugs a mic without muting. A small risk, maybe, but risk just the same. Just sayin'.
  2. Fundamentally it's the assumption that's false. There's nothing a bass can put out that can damage the amp before one's ears warn of the potential danger. A meter or clipping indicator is fine, but redundant, which is why most amps don't have one. Some do, of course, and it's a good selling point, but I doubt that many musicians watch their amps just in case the light flickers on, or the meter goes into the red. Signal is not 'wasted', either, if the volume goes down. Some players use this to add dynamic content to their playing. Less signal is not a Bad Thing. Not enough signal is different, but, again, one's ears are usually sufficient to detect such a case. Hope this helps.
  3. Schubert, especially the Ninth, more especially still, the trombones... Oh, and Jack Casady, of course.
  4. Hofner Verithin = MG TF
  5. +1. He's right, you know. Good Stuff; well done. Thanks for sharing.
  6. Never heard of her, so I looked up a few videos. I wish I hadn't.
  7. In listening to some so-called 'mainstream/chart' music (as I do, but as little as possible...), I often get the impression that most of the players are 'fifth wheels', as there is little real virtuoso in there, what with a drone of a bass, a 'disco'-style 'One-One-One-One' thud from a synthetic bass drum, a cheesy 'hook' line from a keyboard of some kind (or even an arpeggiateur..!) and a robotised, auto-tuned vocoder vocal track (usually heavily harmonised to overbrimming...). Yes, I'm exaggerating slightly, but there's an awful lot of over-produced sludge out there, and a well-played cowbell is often the high-spot of the whole piece. Mozart has been dead a long time; most modern 'pop' music hammers this home to us on a regular basis. Sad..? Yes, it is. Old..? Yes, I am.
  8. Or a gong..?
  9. Are there virtuoso players..? Of course, as with just about every instrument. Here's just one, performing a well-known piece... I can't comment too much on her style, as I can't hear those frequencies; to me she could be just as well miming.
  10. I would humbly suggest that listening for distortion would be about the best way possible, 'clipping lights' or not.
  11. The same was said of Wagner. ...
  12. Just to be clear... One is allowed to not like one, two or indeed all of the entries; voting is not (yet...) mandatory, so listening, then voting for only one, or two, or none at all is fine. Jut sayin'.
  13. My memory being as it is, I'll have to read it again to find out..! ...
  14. A shame; you're missing some delicious grub ... Suggested cheese and jam pairings ...
  15. Curtains, then, for Canned Heat, Poppa Chubby and Little Bob Story then, eh..? One could go on; the list is long...
  16. That's not a stick of bread. ...
  17. Precocious, huh..? There's pills for that, or thinking of John Major. Hope this helps.
  18. My Mum was Scottish; incomprehensible more than half the time in my case.
  19. Offers and trade propositions posted in 'For Sale' ads are systematically deleted. They are to be made by Private Message (PM...) only. Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
  20. I've all but given up on getting stuff from the US of A, exactly because of shipping costs to France. To be fair, I've completely given up on getting stuff from the UK, for the same reason. Shipping within the EU is OK (always too expensive, whatever, of course..!), but acceptable. Shipping from the Far East is ludicrously cheap (but slow...). I bought a 'box' from the US in November; it finally arrived beginning of April, after much hassle for all parties concerned, and still had to pay import duties on top. I sometimes think that there's a tramp steamer still operating the Atlantic route, using dollar bills as fuel. Shipping..? It's a lottery.
  21. Does that make me a jazz drummer, then..?
  22. Good evening, Smudge, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share.
  23. Buddy who..? ... ...
