Time for new spectacles..? I use each month's Challenge picture as screen 'wallpaper'; this allows me to cogitate on the theme whenever I turn the PC on (which is often...). This morning (and for the second time..!), I tried to get rid of the fly that had landed on the screen, only to realise that it was not a fly, nor speck of dust, but a lone traveller crossing the scene on his camel..! D'oh..!

My 'phones are too cheap to be worth listing; I've taken a screenshot of the curve of the closest relative (Superlux 681...) which I'll try to emulate, and see if it sounds better to me. Too expensive for me, of course, but if I can get an approximation, it may improve things a little for me. The comparison from the 'on-line' sample was pretty effective.

[/quote] No, you're not wrong at all; that's exactly right. It is, however, equally possible to turn the telescope the other way around, play bass lines (one's own or other folk's creations...) and derive scales and chords and melodies from them. It's also perfectly possible to play along to a disk and never know what the notes are called, or their relations to each other. Not that this is the 'best' way, nor the quickest, but it's the way very many folks start out, and often enough turn later on to the more formal, or technical side (so much the better...). Starting out in one's bedroom, or a garage with one's buddies, and jamming away, making a racket, getting blisters, maybe even breaking a string or two... This is a perfectly legitimate activity for a budding musician. Some study alongside is good; some 'letting one's hair down' and enjoying the simplest of riffs for twenty minutes solid is good, too. Look at scales, certainly, but don't imagine that one [i]has [/i]to remember any of that to play the bass (or any other instrument, of course...) Just sayin'.

[/quote] Maybe a rather pedantic point, but I'd suggest that it's the opposite: scales came about because of music folks were playing. It's perfectly legitimate, for some, to completely forego all formal knowledge of these mechanical constructions and still become virtuoso performers and skilled musicians. I wouldn't suggest for a moment that scales etc should [i]not [/i]be looked at and/or studied, but I consider it a blinkered view to say that they're the crux of the matter. Different folks have differing perspectives; one size does not fit all.

For the anecdote... Several years ago now we played a gig for a friend's village fête, in their modern village hall. Our sound man had set up recording from the console to a stereo disk; we were very pleased. The gig went off very well; we played our usual pretty good standard, so we were more than keen to listen back to the disk. Horror..! A mistake in the setting up had produced a very mushy (a technical term...), buried rendering; difficult for us to even recognise what song was what..! Darn it, a good opportunity wasted, or so we thought. Back home, our thinking was along the lines of 'we've nothing to lose'; we transferred to our DAW and gave the whole sorry track a dose of Ozone. Goodness knows how that stuff works, but the result was as good a take as we could have hoped for initially; we could even hear (all too clearly..!) the flubs (another technical term...) made on the bass intro to Karma Police. Nothing else needed much at all, just cutting up into bite-sized separate songs for commodity. It's now our pride and joy, being our first 'live' recording. I suspect that it's linked to witchcraft, or at the very least voodoo, to get such a result from the murky original we fed into it. It was worth the night spent on a dark hilltop beheading chickens. I'll see if I can dig up the tracks for comparison, all these years later... Now then, where did I put those shellac disks..? Hmm...

Maybe the best £20 you'll spend (get the spiral-back edition, which will lie flat on a table, or even (gasp..!) on a music stand..!). It's very progressive, has interesting enough pieces to play and goes through just about everything you're likely to ask, at your own pace. Recommended, even whilst going over Youtube videos and all. This method has the keys to bass playing that you're looking for.

[/quote] Not strictly true; it's a 'Balance' control between listening to the interface direct input and listening to the DAW. When playing an instrument, you may want to not listen to the DAW (there could be a delay due to latency, for instance...), in which case you'd dial anti-clockwise to 'Direct'. To hear the result of your input [i]including [/i]any DAW treatment or tracks playing, you'd dial to 'DAW'. Anywhere in between is admissible, of course. Just sayin'; hope this helps.

A buddy of ours, running an events business, is from the '80s 'disco' era; his 'default' sound is based on the subs being audible for literally miles around. When he's doing the PA for our gigs, there's quite a lot of 'education' involved (difficult, and sometimes painful, as he's a very big chap..!). The ears of this generation of sound guys are not tuned to 'hifi' systems, but to festivals ending with a dub session, with hour after hour of DJ, or reggae. Typically, our fellow will arrive with three times too many subs for the occasion; that's just his way of thinking that the event will go down well. It usually does, too, but there's a fair bit of re-adjustment for our sets. It's an inheritance from the dark days of disco, I think, which has skewed their hearing and expectations of what constitutes 'good sound'.

More..? ) you'll be looking to upgrade; till then, just get on with recording, mixing, creating... You'll know when it's time.
