... I can't believe people have gear that leaves the house and isn't insured.
It's only stuff, after all. A hassle if nicked or damaged, but not life-threatening in any way. Insurance is just betting, really; so far, by luck and diligence, I've never had any occasion to win such a bet. It could happen, of course, but in the meantime I'm not concerned by looking for insurers, comparing rates, having to renew (and fork out, naturally...). I can safely say that I've never lost a bet in my life, so far, and for good reason; I never bet.
Hi, my band need to get some 'Public Liability Insurance'...
Have you considered the Musician's Union (MU...)..? PLI is one of the advantages of membership, and included in the subscription cost, which I gather is rather modest. Worth looking into to see if it fits your needs, maybe..?
... Actually when I say 'goals', it's more the fear of utter humiliation at my next lesson encourages me to practice more, but I didn't want to say that.
Understandably; it's not the sort of thing one wants posted on a public forum..! ...
Good work Dad. No disco beat? We'll get you converted to ambient before you know it.
Please don't tell him that; he'll be furious..!

I've posted my 'Orchestral Piece' now, with a slight 'Sniff', though, as Soundcloud tell me I've overrun my quota..! I've gone back in time to delete my first Challenge entries from three years ago (I still have 'em, of course...), so they'll no longer be available to my diligent followers. I'm sure that Soundcloud will suffer from the ensuing outcry..! Never mind; onward and upward, eh..?

Something I started a year or so ago, and dusted down since. I've only shown it to a couple of people, so no idea as to what reception it could have. Be warned, however; it's fourteen minutes long, with not a hint of a disco beat..! Here then, is my 'Orchestral Piece'... Enjoy (..? )
... And yes Douglas, it's in Dm ...
... Nice piece, despite the Dm. Good Stuff. Just by way of contrast (in no way in a spirit of competition; just for fun...), I'll put up a piece of mine. It's being prepared now; t'will be posted shortly...

This sounds like a couple of chapters from Dave Vader's previous book..!
Sorry, 'twas I. I felt two stood out above all the others this month. Nothing to do with bad arithmetic.
Phew..! Thanks for that. No worries, no-one is obliged to vote for three; I just found it odd, and pretty well every month. I'll get back to thinking about important stuff, then. As you were, men; nothing to see here. (Pops back behind the parapet and tries, by telekinesis, to untie his shoelaces. Gives up after a while; they're Velcro, anyway. Twiddles thumbs for a few seconds, then nods off again...)
How come all you guys play covers????
Someone has to, or folks would never get to hear 'em performed live.

Mid-'70s, the variety band I was drumming with had a 'Stones' segue, one part of which was 'Satisfaction'. At our first rehearsals, I play 'my' version, with accent splashes and dynamics. The band leader calls it to a halt, and asks me to play 'like the record' (but in French, of course. Do try to keep up... ). I query this, but the fellow insists. 'OK, you're the Boss' (In French, of course...). We go through it again, and I play what's on the record. I don't know if you've listened to it recently..? Mr Watts does a constant 'One-One-One-One' on bass drum, hats pedal and snare drum, all the way through, relentlessly, with no variation at all. The tiny 'lift' in there is only provided by the tambourine doing the 'chink-chink-chink' at the end of each phrase. It's dreadful; absolutely dreadful; boring as hell to play, and even more boring to listen to..! The band leader objected; I get him to listen to the 'real' track (not his memory of it...), and we all happily agree to keep my interpretation, with its dynamics and accents an' all..! Playing like 'the original hit record' does not always translate to a 'live' band.
Wouldn't it be better to have a spare loo roll
As reading matter..? A bit dull, don't you think..? -
I can...
...which is good; very good indeed. When I was drumming with variety bands (mid '70s...), I had to write out the drum parts myself, as they were simply not available. I've never, ever, been handed a drum part; still less asked to play one by sight. I wouldn't have been able to play reading 'real-time' anyway at gigs, however; not for lack of ability (I wrote the parts..!), simply the impracticality of having an A4 folder propped up beside the kit, all the while playing and paying attention to the MC and other musicians..! Most of the work was done at home, in practise sessions, going over the parts and more or less committing them to memory. At the gig, the folder would be there, propped up, but I'd have little time to do much more than turn to the right piece, a cursory glance and we're off on my count... We all have differing needs and levels of experience, so it seems reasonable to me to have different styles and methods of coping with whatever we're doing. For some, a written score is a boon, to others it's a hindrance. As you say: to each his/her own.
-
Arithmetic tells me that, if that were the case, others have chosen more than three..!
-
I don't think many people sight-read tab; I don't think many people sight-read dots, either. Experienced musicians, of course, but for most folks that can read music, it's a case of sitting down and deciphering, bar by bar, line by line. Reading a score is one thing, sight-reading in 'real time' whilst playing is an extension of that, but not that many attain that level, in my experience. It depends, of course, in which circles one gravitates, too..

I've always found that a little bit intriguing; five voters have cast fourteen votes. Perfectly legitimate, of course (voting is not yet obligatory...), but it seems that, every month, someone decides that there are less than three pieces worthy of note. Maybe there's another explanation..? Dunno; just seems odd to me, that's all.
