In my vein of predilection, it's the hi-hat that is most important to me; the bass drum is used mostly simply as punctuation, not the 'big beat'. Old-school swing style. Of course, things change a little when 'Daddy Cool' is in the repertoire, or 'Highway To Hell'..!

[/quote] This ^^ makes no sense to me. assuming you're meaning 'at live gigs', and not rehearsal (there's really no need to mic up a kit for rehearsals..!), then surely it's a call for the sound engi to make as to whether to have the drums miced, and how, and maybe (just maybe..?) feed some back to the drummer's foldback if he/she needs it..? I can't imagine how or why a drummer would want to dictate what the FOH gets; even less the monitors for the others..! Maybe I'm unusual, but when I've been playing my drums, in any formation over a long career, it's never once occurred to me to amplify what I can already hear very well indeed (and I'm now rather deaf, due to ageing..!). Very rarely, usually on open-air 'festival' type stages, I've wanted a touch of BD in my foldback, but even then only a tad. Is this common amongst drummers, then..? What have I been missing all these decades..?

As an aside, and notwithstanding the superb innate qualities of the performance that merits viewing in its own right, this could be shown, maybe, to any of those 'drummers' that suggest that they can't (it's really 'won't'..! ) play quietly..! Magical, could go on for hours longer. Uplifting, pure joy in ingot form. Smiles (perhaps tears..?) guaranteed, or, if not, consult.

  19. It's a bit like the difference between an 'off the peg' bass and a custom-built master craftsman one. If it is in budget, there's a fair chance that the custom bass is 'better', but for very much less, and with maybe a bit of compromise in the research for the absolute, a 'standard' bass is just fine, and maybe better than one would have constructed oneself on the kitchen table with little or no carpentry experience. For my part, and for what it's worth, I use... [url="http://www.curioza.com"]AAMS ...[/url] ...for 'automatic' mastering, which brings a certain homogeneity to my efforts. Is there better out there..? Quite likely, but this one is free, and does a fine enough job for my cloth ears. Would a Mastering Engineer approve..? Maybe not, but my needs are too modest, anyway, to merit such treatment. Does it make all of my production sound the same..? Not at all; it just polishes my t**ds a spot, bringing them that tiny bit more closer to the 'target' sound I wanted (orchestral film, pop, acoustic folk etc...). Magic bullet..? Of course not, and I don't use or need it every time, but it does a very good job for the price I paid (donations to the authors are accepted for the V2 that I use; the current V3 is free to download, and limited to 4 minutes, so one is encouraged to register for 65€ ...). Just sayin'; hope this helps.

  21. If you import the MIDI track into a separate, spare, track in the DAW, then test to see where the bass drum lies, it's pretty easy to transpose the whole lot down or up an octave, as required. Then copy/paste the result into the 'real' track your using. I use a very varied selection of MIDI stuff, as well as several virtual drum Vst's, so that's how I match 'em up. It is also true that GM is exactly what it says, ie: 'general'. There are as many exceptions as adherents to the norm. Superior Drummer, for instance, has almost a drum map for each kit, often with no real equivalents in other kits. It's part and parcel of the 'fun' of virtual instruments. After a while, one tends to go with the set-up that gives the best results for most things, and only get into wild experimentation when there is time to [s]waste[/s] spare. One can spend hours trying out various combinations of MIDI source and Vst kit, only to go back to the 'tried and tested' in the end. Just sayin'.
