[/quote] So much the better..! Is there not an increasing trend for guitarists to use a pre-amp/DI and go through FOH, with no back-line amp at all..? Sounds like an approach to [i]that [/i]approach, to me..! A bit of modelling and, bingo..! As you've already mentioned, though, it can't do any harm at all to plug in and listen to the result. Dry, perhaps not so authentic, but with a bit of treatment, it may be quite satisfactory for home use.

[/quote] Well, technically, reverb is, effectively, a combination of a multitude of 'delays' all superimposed, such as the effect of a cathedral, or large cavern. A single 'delay' is often simply a single repetition, as an echo from a mountain cliff. In practise, they are different effects, which can be used together or individually to great effect (groan...). Do I have any luck with this..? I have, amongst others...) a Fender Bassman 50w, an 'old-school' valve amp. I play guitar through this, into a Fender Bassman 2 x 15 cab (see pic...). To obtain a more fulfilling sound, I play through a Boss Fender Deluxe pedal (in the pedal-board on the right in the photo...), with which I can add delay, reverb and/or overdrive. It sounds fine to me (bear in mind that 1 - I'm 'old-school', and 2 - getting progressively more and more hard of hearing. I've used this same rig for the last 40 years or so, though, so I'm beginning to know how to set it up for my 'style'. If we're talking home practise, that may be a bit too voluminous for some (not for me; I have all the space I need...), but the notion of playing at home into a (quality...) bass amp, with a reasonable pedal or multi-effect, seems fine to me. What's the alternative, if one is really looking for 'that' guitar sound..? A Fender Twin..? At home..? An inexpensive combo would be fine, but the Aguilar rig will do a good job, too, I'd say.
  4. It'll sound fine, but won't give of its best without a pedal or two. A bit of delay, a decent reverb, maybe a spot of overdrive if that's what you like. Electric guitars have their sound greatly through the use of pedals, especially in home practise territory. Just my tuppence-worth.

If he's got a set (whatever their make or provenance...), then he's doing very well. Getting 'em to work in differing genres is yet another challenge, and, you're right, none of it comes cheap. My snares are a Camco 14x5.5 maple, a Tama 14x6.5 Maple and a Tame 14x6.5 steel. To me, they're very different; to most, in a band context, I doubt if they could be distinguished, as I'd be adjusting the playing to suit the song. A different 'ring', different dynamiques, different 'voices', but just a snare in the mix, especially if mic'ed. Still, I take the general point. Maybe I should start taking my collection of cymbals, too..? My Paistes are well different from my Sabians, or Meinls. Who'd know what I had mounted at any one time..? What does your drummer use..? Could you tell from listening alone..? Are they just for display..? After all, many great drummers got by with a pair of hats and a crash-ride. What are the others for..? Spare..?Showing off..? Maybe.
  9. When I see a piano on stage, it's only from the name written on it that tells me it's a Steinway or a Bechstein (other factors are available...). If I close my eyes and concentrate really hard on the tone, I'm none the wiser, either. Maybe I'm just a Philistine, or a non-tone freak, but I really find it hard to believe that it's of interest of any but hardened bass buffs to even think of such stuff. If the maker's name is not on the bass drum, can [i]you [/i]tell if your drummer plays Pearl, or Tama, or Sonor, or ... (the list is long...). Is that an oak kit, or maple..? Birch, maybe..? These things are the subject of some drum forum sections, but raise very few eyebrows in more general circles. Counting the basses..? My eyes are shut, listening to those precious piano tones, so how would [i]I [/i]know..?

I think that it's close enough to Christmas to suggest that this would be a very good present, either to yourself, if you've not yet a copy, or to someone around you that you really, really like a lot. A great read; not quite in the 'Tolstoy' category of modern literature, perhaps, but direct, straight writing, telling it just as it is. It's not 'cheap', it's 'inexpensive'. Order now to be delivered in time; I think they'll gift-wrap, if you ask 'em. Go on; you know it makes sense.

If my bass pedal fails, there's not bass drum. I'd do my best on the floor tom, probably.
  13. The Good News is that I managed to play it through (and capture it, for replays...), so have now run it through a few times. The Bad News..? None, I'm afraid; in fact, the Official Term for pieces of this quality is 'Jolly Good; Jolly Good Indeed'. It's been quite a while since I've had the opportunity to listen to a solo piece as good as this. Criticism..? Well, I could, if you insist, but that'd be simply a question of personal choices and taste, rather than really spot-lighting flaws (maybe a tiny glitch where the guitar solo comes back in, close to the end..?). The composition is sound, the arrangement fitting, the execution spot-on, the lyrics worthwhile, the singing correct for context. It made me think, if comparison is to be made at all, of Trevor Reznor in his 'noisier' days. My choices..? I'd have chosen a 'thicker' snare, maybe doubled with snares on during the refrains..? I'd have chosen more tonal separation for the principal guitars, to better distinguish them, I'd certainly have doubled the vocals (not that they're not well sung; in fact they're really excellent...), simply to, again, 'thicken' the voice in the face of the wall of shred behind, and which I'd lower by a brick or two. Tiny production details, really, that don't brig discussion; they're just choices. All in all, you can be rightly proud of the work, and need fear no exposure. I'm perhaps not the harshest of critics, but if it's bad, I'd say it's bad. It's not, it's Jolly Good; Jolly Good Indeed. Well done, lad; we'd like to hear more from you, in similar vein or otherwise. Thanks for sharing.

Aw shucks; t'was nothing ([i]gazes at carpet, hands behind back, twiddling pointed foot to and fro[/i]... ) The trick is to use the 'Share' link from Youtube, pasted into the post, then to remove the 's' from 'https' at start of link, that's all. Simple, really. And the band is fine. Merits better than the auto-volume sound recording. No way of mixing in a feed from the PA..? Good stuff; will go far.
