1. Make up a picnic lunch box, with scotch eggs and sarnies, or leek quiches, a tomato and salad; maybe a yoghurt..? Use a disposable cardboard box; job done..?
 2.
...However, the 'freedom' of improvisation does not come easily to me...
One 'trick' to improve this is to sing along, or hum, an accompaniment to anything, anything at all, on the car radio, adverts on the telly, CD's you're listening to. Different melodies, different rhythms and/or beats, or just drone notes or harmonies... Let it come out naturally, without looking for any particular structure, and see how it develops. Not just bassy stuff, either; anything goes. Best practised when one is alone, rather than in a cinema, of course. Hope this helps.
 3.
Many sellers don't seem to know that payment as a gift is not free to the buyer, if that buyer is not registered with PayPal...
There is a buyer's fee even if one is registered with Paypal. Years ago it was free, but that was changed; I can't remember when (but then again, I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, either..! ). Paypal is fine, I find, between trustworthy folks; it can go wrong, as can any scheme, even cash (forged notes, anyone..?). One has to be wary, especially when dealing with strangers, whatever the system. Just sayin'.
 4. Doesn't word exclusion help at all..? Searching for 'Fender -Squier' would bring up only ads with the word Fender, as long as there is no mention of Squier. Not perfect, but what is..?
 5. I don't think that 'stretching' is really the right term. The string isn't any longer afterwards than before, it's just more 'settled in', or 'bedded'. The pulling, extra tension and all just takes up any slack there may have been (and usually is...). Maybe for nylon strings on a classical guitar; they can stretch, but not steel strings. I may be wrong, of course, and the result is pretty much the same, I suppose.
 6. Ha..! The world is small. Say 'Hello' to Doug from me, the next time you see him, please..? We're homonymous, you see. Ha..!
 7. Basses and guitars get the same treatment from me (or rather, us, as our eldest and our youngest do the same...). Fit the new string(s...), bring up to pitch, then, holding the string in the middle, gently lift the instrument and give it a gentle 'bounce' its own weight for a second or two. This beds in the string, at the ball end, ensuring that it's well and truly in its place, and also at the tuner, ensuring that the turns are tight around the peg. It's always necessary to re-tune after this, but from then on, the tuning (electric, folk, nylon guitar, baritone, bass...) needs no further time to stabilise. This has been my (our...) procedure for decades. I've buddies that don't don't do this, and have to play and tune up for a few days before stability sets in. I say 'don't'; that should be 'didn't', as most have changed to my (our...) technique since, having witnessed its benefits. YMMV, of course.
 8. An old thread, but I'll mention it just the same... 'Cranked' volume can be controlled quite effectively by turning the cab face down on a carpeted floor. This'll tame even 4x12 cabs, but works very well for home combos, too, as long as heat dispersion isn't an issue. Valve warmth without the shattered windows. Best with sealed cabs; 'open-backs' could have a cushion over 'em. Just sayin'.
 9.
OK, won't try and reason with such a radical view.
Not so radical as all that, I'd say. There are many 'reasonings' that are entirely valid, I'd say.
 10.
So if you remove musical from the last response, are you happy funding education with your taxes? If so, do you really feel that you should be able to pick and choose on such a level as to how education is delivered? Music has a profound effect on literacy, much music theory is intrinsically tied to mathematics, and it has a great impact on the soft skills that children need to learn (the latter being much in demand by groups including the CBI and Russell Group universities).
All of this is true, but equally true of many other curricular or extra-curricular activities. Sports fields..? Cookery classes..? Basic home economics..? Sex education..? Debating societies..? Chess club..? School (and local...) libraries..? The School Play..? Does one have to choose one or other of these as a priority, or other things for public money to go on..? How about diverting some of the Trident - submarine fund, or aircraft carrier money, to something with a known, and wanted, positive outcome..? Music is fine, but there's so much more, too.
 11. Lest we forget..? The Water Babies, by Charles Kingsley ...
 12.
Mamies on 35th and National, Friday night 11/18 9:30- 1:30am....
Darn it..! Just when Koh-Lanta passes on 'telly..! I'll have to give it a miss, I'm afraid. Sorry.

 14.
Ha, I know exactly what you're saying. It was just a bit of a rant that had kind of been brewing for much of yesterday. I'd spoken to the guy on Monday afternoon, and we'd been chatting about things. I mentioned that I was going to be at uni in London yesterday. That's when he told me he'd got a degree too, and how he'd got it in 2 years etc, etc.
Ah, but has he got a BC Composition Challenge Certificate..? That's the real test..!
 15. T'ain't just drummers (I'm a drummer; have you guessed..?). How many times has the PA set off a high-pitched scream as a mic passes too close, or the keys decide to try out his new orchestral stabs without checking his volume..? The list is long (including a bombarde doing a sound check; that sent our whole band reeling back a few metres..!). Brass can get very loud, too. Tinnitus and hearing loss often set in in any case with increasing age (don't ask how I know this...). It cannot be cured, but it can be staved off for as long as possible.
 16. As long as you're happy with what your hard work has brought you, I don't see the problem. If others have a 'short-cut', or degraded version, they presumably won't have your acquired skills. How does that debase your own work..? I doubt that any decent job you'd be after would be 'snatched' by one of these fly-by-night pieces of paper (or, if it was, it wasn't a decent job needing your skills...). Let the children play; trace your own route and ignore the others. It doesn't sound as if you regret having put in all of that work, so you're the 'winner', no..?
 17.
I was in Sofia, Bulgaria earlier in the year and went to a store there. This is Music Division. The manager is Boris Raikov. www.musicdivision.bg. Their retail prices are probably lower than UK prices as well.
It can't be that expensive to pop over to there for the day, maybe..?
 18.
The ecler is 1600w in bridged mode and i had it in bridged mode............an output spike I'm guessing.
And are you having the glass replaced in the windows and concrete cracks repaired..? Good gracious, we use a 200w amp and never get past halfway 'cos it gets too loud..!
 19. The original question wasn't bass solo, nor solo bass, but using bass as a lead (implies other instruments..?) or melodic instrument (which, by the very nature of its fundamental frequencies it is not ideally suited, I'd say...).
 20. I've posted it before, but here's Mr. Casady pushing the boundaries of bass playing (kicks off gently at 1:30, then goes for it at 3:30...)... http://youtu.be/PyFIBEvNXbM
 21.
Bit far for most you but Friday night will be at Nouhant (Dept 23)...
Only by a few hundred kms..! Nearly...
 22.
Avoiding I, IV, V and I, V, VI, IV does not mean deliberately being left field and convoluted. How about I, I, I, I, I, I, I etc. for example?
Disco, huh..? As a drummer, I'm all too familiar with the 'One, one, one, one...' Big Beat.
 23.
This, most definitely. Betterer to have tried and failed, than not have tried at all.
Yes, that's what Icarus was told, too.
 24.
Completely true, however, some songwriters take the most overused, off the shelf chord structures and turn them into dull, formulaic fodder for the masses.
And some songwriters take the most convoluted, left-field chord structures and turn them into dull, formulaic fodder for the elite.
