Isolation pad / vibration dampener for valve amp
Dad3353 replied to Basszilla's topic in Accessories and Misc
This is our solution; the flight case is lined with shock-resistant foam. Gig over, and cooled down, we just slip the case top back on, turn the butterfly latches and away it's under the blue 'bits' box... -
What do you need to get that "killer slap" tone?

Future Proof recording interface?
Dad3353 replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
...an excellent digital portable recorder for use with my good mics for finished product recordings.
I use a Fostex MR8-HD for this; 4 simultaneous tracks, for drums. I export by USB with a very ancient bit of Fostex software which causes no problems at all with Win-10, despite its age. -
Much obliged Dad. Is the 'share' text something other than the normal link, because I tried that without the 's' in 'https', but it didn't work.
[sharedmedia=core:attachments:167485] -
... If someone can make this embed work, I'd be very grateful.
Copy and paste the 'Share' text, but remove the 's' from 'https' at the text start. -
Bugger, I remember watching a band called '7 Year Itch' and now I am confused as to which one I saw!
Ah yes; I've been following them from scratch.
... Why people seem to think sustain is a desirable trait for a bass guitar has always baffled me, too.
Doesn't some music require long notes..?
... Cheers in advance for any help guys...
Yes, you're confusing a couple of issues here, but let's clear them up. Firstly, the twin sockets on the cabs (and, indeed, on almost all amps...) are wired in parallel. One can use either; it makes no difference. If an amp has two outputs, one would usually plug a cab into each, and the amp would 'see' the total impedance in parallel, just as if there was only one cab. For the two 8 ohm cabs mentioned, the amp would see 4 ohms. Your amp has only one output, so you would plug instead one cab into that, and the other into the second output on the first cab. The result, electrically, for the amp is identical; it will see 4 ohms just the same. The power handling question is also slightly askew. Each cab has a rating of 400w. Its impedance is of no importance for that; it just 'is'. The amp has a power output dependant to some extent on the impedance presented. It will give a certain power at 8 ohms, and a bit more into 4 ohms. The power rating of the two cabs combined is 800w. The amp will be able to supply 500w into that load (4 ohms...). The cabs are therefore 'safe'. One single cab can handle 400w, but the amp, into 8 ohms, will be able to supply only around 300 or so, so, again, the cab is 'safe'. A word of warning, just the same. The manufacturer's rating of 400w doesn't mean that much in real terms; it basically means that the speaker (probably...) won't burst into flames before that wattage. In reality, it may very well sound bloomin' awful well before then. Use your ears to judge if the cabs are being over-driven (and wear ear protection, if you value your hearing...). Don't wait for the magic smoke to appear. There; does that help at all..? Subject to completion, correction and/or contradiction from others.

Breathtaking in its deliberateness, magnitude, and hubris

A full bass composition "farewell to 2015"
Dad3353 replied to muratceyhan's topic in Share Your Music
... Any comments are always welcome...
Well done, lad; well done indeed. Very nice 'layering', excellent tone throughout, and a nicely edited, informative video. It doesn't get much better than that; congratulations. There's definitely an Oriental twist to some of your runs and licks, which I find refreshing (they may not seem so to you, of course..! ). One remark (not a criticism, I hasten to add...); I would have liked to have had a progression in there (up a tone..?, a middle eight'..? a 'B' part, then back to 'A'..?). The original 'building block' lick is fine; it could have handled evolving. Just my dumb view (and I'm a drummer, so what would I know, anyway..? ). Welcome again, then, and keep 'em coming. Thanks for sharing. -
This was really helpful thank you! I've got an Aguilar Tonehammer preamp pedal which has an XLR out, would I put this last in my chain and take the XLR from the pedal to the desk or use a jack lead like normal and take the signal from the XLR out of the amp?
Ideally you'd do both, then compare the results and see which suits you better. Taking directly from the pre-amp means you no longer need the combo for recording. Using the combo, with or without the pre-amp, means you have the use of the combo tone controls, if required. Both are good (as, indeed, is the bass directly into the interface, if that's the sound you need for that particular take...). It only costs a few minutes (well, about an hour or so, really...) to go through all of the permutations, then you're set for the future to choose for each job the best match. Have fun.
...any advice greatly appreciated!...
The sound of a bass, raw, straight onto record is not always that wanted. If you like the sound from your combo, I'd recommend connecting the 'Line Out' from that into the 'Line' input of your interface (which is perfectly adequate for your purposes...). There is a 'Pre-Post' switch on the combo; you'll want 'Post' to get the sound of the combo's tone settings. The sound recorded will be that of your bass and combo, without the speaker colouration. If this is still not satisfactory, you'll either need pedals before the combo, between the combo and the interface or software pedals post-recording. Hope this helps.

So it's Asambique that's bought the whole building, then..? Harrumph..! He could at least have split the cost..!

Come on now, lads, play fair. I know you're both proud, but this is really a bit much, don't you think..?
I appreciate that they're making it as short as possible but the extra half beat or beat could easily be fitted in and not extend the advert at all.
Advertisers are subject to fashions, too. Having a 'glitch' in a well-known tune is quite likely a 'subtle' way of attracting attention to the ad. There was a fashion, a few years ago, to have tunes which would change pitch slightly, just at the 'right' moment for heads to turn to the screen and see what was 'wrong'. How many of these little tricks incite folks to buy the products is anyone's guess, but for the advert agencies, it's all 'fair game'. I wonder what next week's trend will be..?

I'm slowly working through our basses; this month I may break out the Cort fiver, which hasn't seen action in... Well, far too long. One day (shan't say when...), I'll pluck up courage and bravado to do a stint of sixer fretless. Noodling..? I could open a chop suey parlour, I reckon. Can't play a tune for toffee, but oodles of noodles. S'gonna be a good year (no, not the tyres, you numpty..! ).
