2. Nice try, but it's over 300 kms from me, so, with regret and apologies, I'll desist. Next time you're in Normandy, maybe..? Have yourselves a great time, of course..!

 4.
Sorry, I did mean useful for my son, or me, even - And yes, played/triggered on Guitar rather than Bass. It's the vib and possibly volume pedal expression, that I might be interested in.
Having seen the video demonstration s of the unit, I can well believe that it's capable of great stuff. That that's within the grasp of a sub-simian clumsy oaf such as myself is yet to be proven. My needs are modest; I'll give it my best...
 5.
Sounds like it could be useful. Could you do me a favour, Douglas, and trigger some Orchestral samples? Strings, Brass and Woodwinds would be good. Just wondering how light vibrato would work. I presume that the expression on The English Horn was baked into the sample? or maybe not?
Useful..? To me, definitely. Will it do all..? Quite probably not, but I'll find the limitations as I continue the trials. For the moments, I'm having best results using a guitar, rather than a bass (but that's the range I'm wanting, anyway, for now...), and using the 'chromatic' mode, which hones in on exact semitones rather than absolute pitch. I'm finding (but it's early days...) that the pitch sensitivity is too high for my poor playing; one has to have a very 'clean hand' for it not to waver about . Only hundredths, but enough to throw it, so I'm not using the guitar vibrato at all, only that of the Vst. I'd say, then, that half of the expression is 'baked in', as you say; the rest is the lightness of touch and playing style. Certainly, I can do a run through of a few instruments; I've been using Alpine's English Horn (it's like an oboe; also known as a cor anglais...), but will strike up a session with Philharmonik this evening or tomorrow, and run through a few favourites. String ensemble, solo violin, trombone, harp... I'll test out a few, then post the results here in the same fashion. I'll try source vibrato, but no guarantee that I can, as yet, master that. We'll see... Remember, this is purely monophonic, so any chordal work (counter-point, fugues...) will have to be done one instrument at a time. If I get inspired, I'll try a compo of the sort, to see if I can get it to 'gel'. Any other requests, while I'm here..? Vangelis, did I hear, there at the back..? Gerroff..! You're just takin' the Mickey..!
 6. One last one... Audio guitar panned Left, MIDI Vst English horn panned Right, to show tracking and latency. Some tiny glitches edited out, otherwise raw... Sonuus, hard-panned Audio guitar and MIDI Vst ...
 7. Here's a bass noodle; my Hofner Verithin, with black nylon Trubass strings pretending to be a Ricky (Vst...), both p/us, DI, played through MIDI with the Sonuus interface. A few glitches edited out, and my bad timing 'massaged', but otherwise pretty much raw... Sonuus Bass Noodle, Ricky ... ... and here's another; same thing, but triggering a Bass Juggernaut Vst Synth ... Sonuus Bass Noodle, Synth ...
 8.
... maybe ?
OK, then, but grudgingly... [sharedmedia=core:attachments:170081]
 9. Just a noodle; here's a Soundcloud of the interface, received about an hour ago. Straight out of the (tiny...) box, plug'n'play into Reaper, using my guitar (Xaviere XV600...), playing a Vst Alpine English horn; one take... Sonuus 1 Noodle ... Does it work..? Yes, for what I want it to do. I'll do a bass one later, once I've sussed it out a bit more.
 10.
I found that an interesting process. I suspect the scales competence question is much more relevant to sight reading than general playing. Anyone using scale/mode patterns/Nashville method as movable shapes should find little difficulty shifting keys. Reading in 4sharps etc is a bit more tricky. That may throw up a bias. For notation complexity a better metric might be speed of reading and error rates when reading a particular set of notes on a stave. Both playing and transcribing note names... More complex to measure and collect data, though.
Indeed; a good point. I took all of the questions to be concerned with playing, not reading, nor even understanding.what one is playing..! I can play in any key, or no key at all. I can't play Shostakovitch with ease, though. The wording of the questions is in favour of those with academic musical skills, not just bass-playing.
 11. ... and here's another. Two notes, basically, but it's how they're played... http://youtu.be/9A7jM-7bNYs
 12.
...even the guys the rest of know from the song and noodle challenges are actually sh!t hot...
[sharedmedia=core:attachments:185803] Sorry; couldn't help myself. If only, lad; if only..!
 13. I'm a fantastic bass player, but my basses are ****, which is why I sound rotten. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Self-confidence is a wonderful gift. To listen to reasonable (and reasoned...) criticism of one's behaviour is one thing; to stand up and do as one thinks best to the best of one's ability is just fine, too. I'd let no-one's opinion alter my own self-esteem (which, incidentally, is quite low, in fact...). It's not complacency, it's self-confidence. You're as good as you are, and better than a very high percentage of folks on the planet. It's not a competitive sport, either; there are no medals to go for. Compare 'yourself' to 'yourself a while ago', and to no-one else.
 14.
"Residents reported that the extraordinarily loud noise, which was heard over most of Kent and even in some parts of northern France, was reminiscent of the song 'Cosmic Girl' by '90s funksters Jamiroquai. The MOD have refused to comment, and a 30 year old man from Cliftonville is helping Police with their enquiries"
"The china jumped off the shelves..!" said a French resident (name withheld for legal reasons...). "We thought the planet had been rent in two..! A shock..? Not arf..!"
 15. Done. Quite thoughtful questions; seemed to be aimed more towards those with some formal knowledge (not necessarily a bad thing...). Some ambiguity in my replies, as I forgot that it's aimed only at bass guitar players, so db answers may not be applicable.
 16.
I recommend magnetic pickups whit very low impedance
These can only work at all on certain types of string. No good for gut, for instance (no ferric content...). Just sayin'.
 17. Whilst not suggesting that speeding up or slowing down is the sign of a good drummer, it's good to note that most decent drum software or hardware includes a 'humanise' feature, so as to sound a bit less clinical. An absolute, 'rock-solid' tempo is good for many styles of music, but not all. Playing to a click (or rather, being able to play to a click...) is good, but it's not necessarily in the best interests of the music being played. Having a 'rev counter' on display before my eyes would not serve me, I'd not invest such a sum, or even half of that. It'll suit some, surely.
 18.
I guess I'm pretty lucky to have a basement to use.
Drumming 'Tip of the Day'... It's a bit easier having the throne on the other side of the kit. ...
 19.
Going to give it a run out in the morning, not really sure what the sound library is all about.
There's a couple of dozen arpeggios in there, in all keys and various tempos, with a 'mix' and the two constituent parts. I've given 'em all a listen, and will be able to fit some in sooner or later, although I'm not particularly EDM-style, myself (as others will testify..!). A nice, if a bit bulky, gift; I wouldn't have paid a lot for anything of this sort, normally. I'll break it out, perhaps, next time there's an 'Angry Birds'-type Challenge pic.
 20. Yes, and I 'phoned Chad to explain how he should have played 'Under The Bridge'. He thanked me warmly, as usual.
 21. The important bits are not the most 'fun'. I'd start with breathing, coupled with relaxation. Any tightening up, anywhere in the body, is going to have consequences, so, if you've not already got that sorted, become able to relax and breath, steadily, deeply. Relax. Yes, yoga (at least, the breathing part...) can and does help, a lot. Second important part: rudiments. Playing the whole kit is fun, and is the objective. Do it, that's fine. But before you do, have a session of rudiments, with a drum pad, a decent set of method books, a metronome (optional, but recommended...) and a good half-hour or more. Go through the snare rudiments slowly, doing single strokes for a while, then double strokes, paradiddles et al. Slowly. Accurately. Relaxed. Breathing. Ignore the rest of your body. Ignore the world. Relax, concentrate on playing, reading the dots, breathing, getting it right. Once you've done that, go to the kit and do the same: rudiments, on the snare drum, on the hi-hats, on the bass drum, on the toms. There are tons of methods for doing the simple exercises on the kit. Once you've done that, you can have a bash about, relaxing into whatever grooves take your fancy (I recommend bossa-nova, or salsa-types beats as a change from 1-2-3-4 metronome stuff...). Don't neglect other time signatures, such as 3/4, 5/7 etc, and relax. Breath. Relax. Now for my usual words of encouragement... It's the first forty years that are the hardest, after which things sometimes tend to become (slightly...) easier. Now relax. Breath. Relax.
 22. I've been many a time on the sound engi end of things, and have always appreciated any (competent...) aid before or after. As a band member, I'm now well past any more than rolling up cables or rolling away flight cases, but, if it helps the tech team (a solo bloke or a whole flock...) I'll never refuse, once my own gear was done. I'm not the jealous kind, so I don't care about who's being paid for what, and at two in the morning, it's too late (or too early..?) to think about getting home a few minutes sooner. Having done this for over forty years, it's now second nature, but I really can't do much more, now, than stay out of the way and crack dumb jokes till it's finished. We all have our different attitudes; that's mine.
 23.
For a short time, Chroma RMX library free - four gigs. Just a case of giving them your email before checkout. https://insessionaud...roducts/chroma/
S'gonna take a while to download; hope it's good stuff. I like Stylus; most that I have is drums, however. It'll be good to have a bit more to play about with. Thanks for the tip-off.
 24. It depends, perhaps, on what you want your teacher to teach you..? If it's his goal to have you 'dig in' more, then discuss it with him, and maybe change teacher. If you've asked him how to play like [Insert appropriate bass god here...], then maybe try it out and see if it gets you where you want to go..? In general, it's recommended practise to turn the amp up and use a lighter touch, letting the amp do the work, but that doesn't suite all styles.
