All of your permutations above (and more...) are valid; the effect of each will be subtly different, and more suited to one person's taste or another. Plug 'em in, play around for a while, then decide. No, your questions are not unusual. You're entirely normal, but have confidence that there is no 'right' way for all. Only you can decide.

I'm a pragmatic, practical individual with very little, if any, imagination, and so looked no further than the end of my nose, and took the picture to be that of a G.A.S. mask.

If the bloke has no better than that to proffer, I'd suggest putting down his sticks for a while and getting a more complete education. The Hofner's are fine, but not long-scale. My Verithin weighs... well, it just doesn't, but it's medium-scale. Is that too far 'out of the box'..? Eminently giggable; I've done loads. No good for 'slap', though.

This is our solution; the flight case is lined with shock-resistant foam. Gig over, and cooled down, we just slip the case top back on, turn the butterfly latches and away it's under the blue 'bits' box...

Firstly, the twin sockets on the cabs (and, indeed, on almost all amps...) are wired in parallel. One can use either; it makes no difference. If an amp has two outputs, one would usually plug a cab into each, and the amp would 'see' the total impedance in parallel, just as if there was only one cab. For the two 8 ohm cabs mentioned, the amp would see 4 ohms. Your amp has only one output, so you would plug instead one cab into that, and the other into the second output on the first cab. The result, electrically, for the amp is identical; it will see 4 ohms just the same. The power handling question is also slightly askew. Each cab has a rating of 400w. Its impedance is of no importance for that; it just 'is'. The amp has a power output dependant to some extent on the impedance presented. It will give a certain power at 8 ohms, and a bit more into 4 ohms. The power rating of the two cabs combined is 800w. The amp will be able to supply 500w into that load (4 ohms...). The cabs are therefore 'safe'. One single cab can handle 400w, but the amp, into 8 ohms, will be able to supply only around 300 or so, so, again, the cab is 'safe'. A word of warning, just the same. The manufacturer's rating of 400w doesn't mean that much in real terms; it basically means that the speaker (probably...) won't burst into flames before that wattage. In reality, it may very well sound bloomin' awful well before then. Use your ears to judge if the cabs are being over-driven (and wear ear protection, if you value your hearing...). Don't wait for the magic smoke to appear. There; does that help at all..? Subject to completion, correction and/or contradiction from others.

[/quote] Ideally you'd do both, then compare the results and see which suits you better. Taking directly from the pre-amp means you no longer need the combo for recording. Using the combo, with or without the pre-amp, means you have the use of the combo tone controls, if required. Both are good (as, indeed, is the bass directly into the interface, if that's the sound you need for that particular take...). It only costs a few minutes (well, about an hour or so, really...) to go through all of the permutations, then you're set for the future to choose for each job the best match. Have fun.

If you like the sound from your combo, I'd recommend connecting the 'Line Out' from that into the 'Line' input of your interface (which is perfectly adequate for your purposes...). There is a 'Pre-Post' switch on the combo; you'll want 'Post' to get the sound of the combo's tone settings. The sound recorded will be that of your bass and combo, without the speaker colouration. If this is still not satisfactory, you'll either need pedals before the combo, between the combo and the interface or software pedals post-recording. Hope this helps.
