Mix bus processing vs Master bus processing
Dad3353 replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in Recording
If I'm reading this correctly (that's not certain...), I can think of only one 'good' reason for having a separate, common, channel for Fx destined for the Master. During the mixing, it may end up desirable to have a channel not going thought these common Fx, or at least switch between in/out to compare. If sending to a common Fx, it would be possible to 'dose' the amount of Fx for each 'send', which would no longer be possible, individually, if the Fx is only on the Master. If this individual control is not required (overall compression, for example...), having this on the Master alone could make sense. There's nothing wrong with using both notions, though: route all channels through a common Fx channel, to 'dose' them if they require tweaking, and have global Fx on the Master as well, knowing that these will affect everything, together. I'd use both; for instance I have my drums in a group channel, and apply individual Fx to each drum element, but also a NY Drum Bus Glue compressor on the drum group channel. I have another NY Glue compressor on the Master, too. My answer, then, is... Both..! -

Math Rock gets serious (and fascinating)
Dad3353 replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
A lot of my compositions sound like that 👆, without resorting to rigid maths. Semi-random can often yield quirky results, too. There are many maths or pseudo-maths approaches; fractals, anyone..? Or tracing the path of a wandering insect and attributing sounds to it. I tried, once, a concerto constructed from a photo of a brick wall... -

Residency. Kind of. Who has done one, pros and cons?
Dad3353 replied to Paul S's topic in General Discussion
A residency is also the term used when a band takes over a venue for the purposes of working out a set, a recording session, a concert or a forthcoming tour. Often with no audience, but sometimes with, so as to gauge reaction to the performance, or for filming/video/promotion. It can be as invasive as 24/7 for a few weeks..! Just sayin'; what's in a word, eh..? -
Top three attributes of a drummer - your opinion?
Dad3353 replied to Mickeyboro's topic in General Discussion
Do you mean 'use of hi-hat'..? I play 'lefty', so left hand for the hats. I'd agree that it's important (or even 'key'...). -

Tribute Bands - do you play in one? Just for fun

Don't hold your breath; he's still busy trying to scrub the make-up off..! -
Well, almost. My vintage Hofner Verithin is not ideally suited for slap (thank goodness...), especially with its black nylon-coated Trubass strings..! 'Thump', yes, 'Slap', not really.

It's a long-standing joke; more about it here... Wikipedia ... Disclaimer : I'm a drummer, so of course it needs more cowbell..!

S'not you, it's our friend Nick in the preceding post. You're OK for now; keep moving, don't block the pavement.

Protect your hearing for as long as possible. Tinnitus puts paid to the luxury of Silence, for ever. As a dubious 'bonus', I now have a Dawn Chorus at Dawn, Noon, Midnight and all points west. Nowt to do about it, but if it can be staved off for as long as possible, it's worth the effort. Just sayin'.

So, you're back, are you..? And where have you been all this time, eh..? Eh..? Answer me, me'lad, or... Oh, I'm sorry..! I thought it was Black Adder..! My mistake; carry on...

A high respect for this outfit, and Rod in particular. I bought a drumstick bag, discounted as being 'last of series'. After payment, Rod contacted me to explain that, since recent EU changes, it would cost a fortune to send the bag from the UK to France. He suggested cancelling the order, after which he would offer the same bag again, but from his 'Etsy' outlet, which operates from within the EU, at this same reduced price, and I could buy it from there. Deal done, and the bag really is splendid (it will outlast me, and a generation more, I'd say...). Such attention to individual orders is definitely 'above and beyond', and the communications were friendly, smooth and pertinent. No hesitation in recommending them for their fine products and excellent customer service. OK, not the cheapest around, but at least worth a look if quality is of any importance.

May I add the usual comment... Have you tried to play a right-handed bass at all..? Being left-handed does not automatically oblige one to use a 'lefty' instrument. Many Lefties get on perfectly well playing 'righty' instruments (guitar, bass, accordion, piano...). Half of our family are 'lefty' (Our father was a 'hard' lefty...); I have a lefty brother that took to my righty guitars, and was much better than I was, much faster. It's not the case for everyone, I know, but if you're starting from zero, it's worth at least trying a righty bass first. Just my tuppence-worth.
