1. Yes, I have been in touch with Alan and know of the bass bash in March. Not sure I can make that weekend. I've started looking through the ACG build thread too. Might give me some ideas.
2. Nice. Surprised the previous owner didn't also add a tugbar.
3. That's a great looking bass. Bargain price too. Shouldn't be around for long.
4. I've been thinking about selling off the herd and investing in a more bespoke instrument. I noticed some articles recently on the No Treble website about 'travel basses', one by a French luthier, Paul Lairat and another by Alan at ACG in Scotland. I live a few hours away further up the west coast of Scotland from ACG HQ and thought this may be a more sensible start. I would like to know what owners really think of their models and how you would describe the tonal and handling qualities etc. I don't know if being a lefty may limit my build options or push the price higher. Cheers in advance :-)
5. That's a nice grain on that fretless body. Makes me regret not buying an early neck-thru fretless 5 Thumb bass when I had the opportunity and the funds.
6. When are you taking orders? .....:-)
7. Love the look of this.
8. At that price it's going to be home use only for sure if played at all.
9. I would snap this up had it been a lefty. Fender jap models are excellent. I own several. Bargain price :-)
10. If it has provenance that he owned it that will be enough for many a collector. ( Time to dust down the fretless.....mwaaah!! )
11. Wowser! Must be like a Fender museum in your gaff Rick.
12. Definitely a Marleaux lookalike. Are you sure its a zero fret and not just a painted fret line like the rest of the neck? Looks that way to me.
13. The colour combo may be one not produced outside of Japan. I've been looking at Fender mij basses for a while and there are many more colour options. The knobs are definitely wrong. Should be flat-top knurled chrome ones.
14. I would have snapped this up had it been a lefty. Keep coming back to this thread just to drool over it.
15. Looks superb! If only all Thumbs were made like this.
16. I bought a 1/2 size db to learn on ( being small) but was dissatisfied by the lack of presence and the physicality of what I imagined an upright should be. I moved it on quite swiftly and hope to find a more suitable instrument for my needs.
17. Of all the Limelights I have seen on their website and of course, on here, this one has to have the most mojo in looks alone by far!
18. I'd like to see you re-consider adding truss-rod covers. I think they add a touch of class.
19. Very unusual and all the extras make it rather special. Might be a bit heavy to sit on the top of the xmas tree though!
20.
Send them to me & I'll do it for you
Thanks! I'll have a think over the festive season as I may opt for your stack-knob wiring kit as well.
21.
If it's just for cosmetic reasons - I wouldn't try it myself... If I were to do it - I'd leave a short run (say 2 - 4 inches / 10 cm ish) of regular plastic insulated wire - solder to that, shrink wrap the splice / join... That way I get a nice cloth wire in the control cavity without desoldering / adding solder and heat directly to a pickup - which I'd never touch for fear of needing to rewind the pickup!
Good suggestion!
22.
Just curious as to why?
Ha! Indeed. Well, I bought some because when I had my bass re-painted I thought the existing plastic wires were pretty flimsy and fragile. It was only on closer inspecyion of where the wiring connect to the actual pups that I realised a change-over was not straightforward.
23. Interesting that you have gone from almost getting a beat-up relic jazz to buying a 'as new' looking reissue, albeit a very cool example. Hope it's a keeper :-)
24. I have two J basses. One strung with rounds and one with flats. I like to switch between depending on the feel I have in my head for a tune. They both get outings to rehearsals. I prefer rounds on my P bass with the tone rolled back.
25. I would experiment and have someone make a gold-coloured pickguard. Would really set off the maple neck.
