1. I see. Never really thought that through. I think it would be Fender steel flats going on. The guy who owns the acousto-electric would like action a lot lower as he's a keyboard player and just dabbles in bass. Im thinking of changing the strings to flats first before tackling any bridge issues.
2. What gauge would help lower the action? A light 45-100 or medium 55-105 gauge?
3.
There`s a Midget going on here at pres, put up today - unless someones bought it already that is.
That Midget flew out of here! Must say something about their quality.
4. The Eden ex112 was the cab that made me start this thread. At around £200 it got me thinking how much for a quality small cab these days.
5. I reckon Barefaced cabs are at the pricey end of the small cab market if they are hand-built. Is there an official website? The Eden EX-112 looks compact but Im not reading anyone recommending it. I remember someone having a Hartke 4x10 that I liked the sound of but I def want to get a single 12". I have an Ampeg 2x10 but miss the bottom I can get from my old but tonne-weight Acoustic combo with 15" ported cab. I think the 12" should be an adequate and portable substitute. In terms of volume produced, I had no idea about displacement etc. Will leave that to the experts but all advice is good advice. As said before, cost will decide the eventual choice but hopefully from this discussion and fellow opinions it will be an informed one.
6. In my current quest to downsize to a portable rig that Im also able to lift and carry I have decided on a micro amp such as GK, Eden etc. However, my knowledge of small cabs is limited and I would be interested to read what 1x12 cabs other basschatters have chosen and why? Budget will come into the mix of course but at the moment Im interested in 1x12 users' opinions.
7. Sorry about that. Let's get back to bass. Since flatwound strings seem to offer the longest tone consistency are there any brands in this area that sit way above the rest? Also, which would be best flatwound replacements on an electro-acoustic bass?
8. Lady Macbeth from Macbeth play by Shakespeare:-) Walks around naked washing her hands once the murder starts. Much better than Inspector Poirot or Morse.
9. Maybe Lady Macbeth was a conscientious bass player. All that hand-washing.
10. Why oh why did I ever part with my fretless L2?!!!!!! Nice bass; nice case.
11. @DorsetBlue Sterling by Musicman range are made in Indonesia. However, the basses are checked over in the States before being shipped. Great quality but cheaper due to lower labour costs etc.
12. Oh the barefaced cheek of this thread.....
13. Just been looking at a Hartke HyDrive 1x12 cab, 300w and its switchable between 4 and 8 ohms.
14.
8 ohm cabinet gives you the option of plugging into another cab if need be on occasion. Whereas if you go with a 4ohm cabinet you can't. I'm a very happy Mb500 user with one 8ohm cabinet
Which make of cab are you using with the MB500?
15. I've been trying to downsize my rig and recently purchased an Ampeg VR micro rig with the 200w solid-state head and 2x10 cab. Bought it here actually. Anyway, my back has been playing up and I feel like trying to downsize further. I live on the 3rd floor and stairs are not my friend. Been sizing up the idea of a Gallien Krueger MB200 or 500 head paired with a 1x12 cab. There is a compact looking Eden 12" cab rated at 300w. Would it make more sense to play the MB200 through a 4ohm rated version or the 500 through the 8ohm rated version?
16. Thanks. I was expecting to get bass to look over last week but hasn't happened. I had forgotten about the pickup placement. Glad its cool to use flats. They feel great to the touch.
17. I have a black Ray34 but I've had an eye on the SUB models too. Sterling by Musicman have finally replied to me saying that a lefty SB14 is unlikely but they are considering a lefty Ray35. If so, I hope its in all maple.
18. Body chemistry? *puts some ph paper on tongue* Im guessing you mean sweat and grease build-up over time. I wipe my strings down every time I play/practice. I guess the life-span of certain strings is, to some extent, down to the production process. Obviously flatwounds will last longest given the types of tone they give out. There are lots of brands out there and maybe there is a perfect match out there for me somewhere.
19. Just a pity Hohner never tried producing a Steinberger copy in short-scale. Even I would want one of those.
20.
I have one on the rear of my Jap re issue 57 P.
What are the chances of two guys on here from Paisley both with 57RI P basses?
21. Still waiting for Sterling by Musicman to produce a lefty version of the SB14. Anyone know if they plan to do so? I emailed them a while back but got no response.
22. I bought a Fender P CIJ last year already fitted with a Kent Armstrong pup and it sounds fantastic. Best P bass I've ever played. Unfortunately I don't know which type is fitted but maybe there is a way to find out? Anyway the range of tones is excellent, from bright highs to muddy lows.
23. Cheers guys. I don't have the bass in my possession yet to look it over again and take any measurements but I'll be very cautious if I do attempt anything, especially since it's not mine. I suggested putting bass into a luthier so maybe he will find out a cost for that. He's a keyboard player who likes to dabble on bass so I think he assimes it isn't complicated to sort action issues etc. Maybe a luthier will know if regular steel flats can be put on. The guy doesn't like the bronze roundwounds.
24. My friend has asked if I can improve the action on his Alliance VP 800B electro-acoustic bass. It has a fixed bridge like most acoustic guitars and the truss rod is accessed just behind the sound-hole. At present it is pretty high and I'm wondering if I can try to take out the string saddle and sand it down with a possible quarter-turn tweak on the truss-rod. Has anyone tried this on an acoustic bass with success? Also, the bass is currently fitted with bronze roundwound strings. Would it be possible to put on normal bass steel flatwounds?
25. I currently have one but have only been using it for practice and home recording so never played it loud but I remember when I had a Gibson EBO, any small combo I tried couldnt handle the bass end from the neck positioned humbucker. It is only a 10" speaker with a low wattage rating after all so shouldnt expect a great deal of air pushing.
