I have 2 lefty MIJ 62 RI Jazz basses. The white one is in pretty relic'd condition and has DiMarzio pups. The sunburst has Seymour Duncan pups fitted. Both are early 1990's but I would say the white one is brighter and the neck feels better. It is also very light in weight. Many people say the Jap reissues are better than some MIA models as you dont get that awful lazy routing hole round the front pickup and can take the pickguard off, ala Jaco.

Its back to basics for me with a fender CIJ 57 RI P Bass and an Ampeg VR micro rig.

Im currently enjoying my P bass.

The sound IS ultimately in the hands. Im pretty sure any famous player with an obvious sound could play any decent random instrument through a decent amp in a music store and you would recognise their sound. Partly this is because their style would shine through but also because they would quickly tweak everything to suit what their ears wanted to hear. My advice would be to either search out that dream bass or if having one built, make sure it looks exactly how you imagined it using good quality materials then let your ears and your fingers do the rest.

Sterling by Musicman have finally made a lefty Ray34 in natural with all maple neck. Now if only they would include a lefty SB14.

I would say the late Mick Karn who played with Japan. A great and unusual fretless player. Also, Robert Bell of The Blue Nile, a lefty like me. Derek Forbes, ex Simple Minds recorded some great baselines. Finally, because he's not technically a bassist, but how about Ray Manzarek of The Doors who played all those fantastic keyboard basslines.

Beautiful looking bass. I have a Warwick Thumb BO 4 lefty and was contemplating a 5 string NT fretless. Have you ever built a lefty? Is it the exact same process?

Why not ask over on the double bass thread? Bound to be plenty experienced users of different acoustic-type pickups there.

Im one of those lefties who play with the bass strung for a right hander, ie. upside down. Its useful in that I can pick up right hand basses instore, flip them over and have a try. The downside is when I get any lefty instrument I have to reverse the nut and sometimes the bridge saddles. At the moment I only have one right hand bass, an Aria fretless. The rest are all lefties. Easier for balance, neck access and not interfering with the controls mid tune. A symmetrical bodied bass works best for just flipping like a Hofner Violin or Gibson EB/SG bass.

The new Fender Mustang closet series has a humbucker pickup. If they made a lefty model I'd probably buy one.

Thank you! Great to have this I think. Lets hope we can have some interesting conversations here. Certainly makes it easier to find other southpaws to share musings, ask particular questions and even show off instruments. I queried the Editor of Bass Player magazine recently about the lack of models being produced by bass manufacturers for lefties and he said it was a subject worthy of an article in a future issue of the mag. Are there any particular basses or models not currently lefthanded that you would like to see put in production and why?

I'll leave starting forums to others more knowledgeable. Im having to access the web via my mobile at the moment and this site doesnt work so well, eg. posting images, creating posts. Lots of glitches for me using an Android phone. Are there web browsers that work more smoothly than others for accessing the forum?

May I just add @icastle that the existing lefty thread did not have to be taken down. Its title could have been changed to Lefty Discussion thread, moved appropriately and lefty members could still have a place to intermingle. It wasnt just about selling basses.

I think a yearly subscription is fine if it means becoming a full member with all access etc. I do think however, that to place an individual ad at £7 is steep, especially if it fails to sell and also remember that ebay have free listing weekends every month, with no sale, no fee. Im sure many will start using the ebay option for smaller item sales. In fact, many items often end up there as it is the biggest online marketplace. I think the initial proposed ad price was fair as was the free listings for lower value items. Im sure the people who run the site could have raised the rates for business ads instead. Must be many bass-related businesses willing to advertise on a busy forum like this.

As long as there is an obvious thread like before, for discussion amongst lefties, minus the selling of gear, peeps can interact as before. It was great meeting other southpaws. Personally, I cant understand why the lefty thread was removed. I would have simply changed its title. Im sure something will get sorted out.

I already made a post asking about a lefty thread and got no replies. There should at least be a lefty thread for general discussion. Ive given up hope.
