Thanks LeftyJ, Hadge. What I did was just cosmetic but I suppose gives the bass a rarity value. Cant imagine many lefties around with that type of pickguard. The bass didnt need much setting up at all. I just tweaked the intonation and string height. The bass has a lovely even tone, not too bright. On a Precision style bass I tend to play using plectrum or thumb so flatwounds may be tried out at some point. Im pleased with the way it turned out.
It looks NICE. I'm thinkin about buying one of these MIJ 57 Pbasses (I can't decide between the 57 and the 62... I like maple fretboards, but my other bass is a Custom order 51 pbass with the maple fretboard). By the way, where did you get the picjguard?? Thanks!
I'd also like a '62 re-issue in sunburst with rosewood neck. The gold anodised pickguard is from Fender. As far as Im aware they dont do a lefty version so before I bought it I asked a guitar workshop if they could flip it and fit it. The finish on the flip side is matte as opposed to the normal side which is brushed but still looks good. The guard was flippable because of the single ply flat edge metal . However, the workshop guy had to counter-sink the holes on the other side and slightly file around the pickup area to help it fit. Only one or two holes didnt match up when flipped so a little tweaking there as well. Will hope to fit a bridge cover plate soon.
Hi! new bass player here. I see some of you have a Japan 57 pbas. I'm thinkin about getting one, but I would like to know what you guys think about the basswood + maple combination. Too bright sound? Thank you!
Hey Ronnie. Now my Japan '57 p bass is up and running I would have to say I think the sound is very old-school depending on the strings you fit. Some precisions are bright and I like that. Easy enough to boost the bass eq on the amp. Just put up some pics of mine. Cheers.

Its quite straightforward. Just take your time. Tools needed will be a tuner and guitar cable; suitable screwdrivers and allen keys. Depending on the type of bass you have will determine the exact type of screwdriver and size of allen keys. The string height should be adjusted first. Play all the notes on each string as you adjust and best result is no buzzing on any of the frets. To adjust intonation use the tuner and press and play the 12th note of a string, followed by the harmonic on same fret. They both should be as close as possible to each other on the readout. To make them match up you will need to move the bridge saddles that the strings rest on, backwards or forwards. If there is a problem with the neck relief then this will require a truss-rod adjustment. This is best left to a guitar tech who would set bass up at same time. Hope this helps.

Here is the finished result and it looks pretty good. -
Ok, here are some pics of the '57 Fender Precision CIJ I bought from LeftyJ recently. The first image is the bass as received and the others are after fitting a gold anodised pickguard with thumbrest. Now looking for a chrome bridge cover to add to the look. Left handed precision/ray/sabre control plate?!
sblueplanet replied to Mabrothrax's topic in Accessories and Misc
If the control plate is not bevelled and is flat edged it might be possible to reverse it and have the screw holes on other side counter-sunk. Im also a lefty and was talking to a guitar tech who said he could make one in plastic, any colour for around 20 quid. Making it in metal would be a much bigger job given the tools required. -
Anodized pickguard for Fender Precision
i just looked at my one and the finnish on the back is a bit ropey and i agree with your matey who said just countersink the other side. if you were down this way id let you try it out but Scotlands a bit of a trek from me. sorry if this isnt very useful Tom
Haha! Thanks Tom. All input is useful. Im going to look at a new one in a guitar store in Glasgow and Im taking the bass along to see what it could look like. The store has an in-house luthier and repair workshop so may get something done then and there. Im also considering making a metal control plate as bass currently has no pickguard but just a plastic control plate which is cracked. -
Looks like someone is receiving his new '57 P RI today
I certainly did! Cheers LeftyJ. Its as nice as I had hoped. Its going to Glasgow with me tomorrow to see if it can have a fender gold anodised pickguard converted and fitted. Ive spoken to Wolf of 'wolfsmusicweekly' who has a fine collection of lefty fender basses and he has done this on several basses so it might be a 'goer'. Failing this I hope to make a copy of the current plastic control plate in metal. I will post my progress and may try for both options as both seem feasible at the moment. Just a matter of cost.

Anodized pickguard for Fender Precision
sblueplanet replied to sblueplanet's topic in Accessories and Misc
UPDATE: Ive spoken to a collector of left-handed Fenders online. He has several instruments featuring gold pickguards. His method is to flip the righty pickguard over and counter-sink the screw holes on the other side. He says the finish on reverse side is not as good but is close, even more relic'd looking. It may be the way to go if I want this look for my bass. -
On both my jazz basses, acquired 2nd hand, the stock p/u's had been replaced. One had Seymour Duncans fitted and the other Di Marzio. I'm guessing the originals just weren't up to the job. Both are excellent replacements.

Anodized pickguard for Fender Precision
sblueplanet replied to sblueplanet's topic in Accessories and Misc
From the image I found the pickguard itself looked flat edged. Ive contacted a seller to ask the same questions so Im hoping to get a response. I'll quote the reply if I get one. -
Hi, Ive just acquired a 57 re-issue Fender Precision cij. Thing is, it's a lefty and has no pickguard. Does anyone know if the righty gold anodized pickguard available from Fender is the same finish on both sides and could be flipped over as I'm darned if I can find a lefty one. I believe from photos that it is not bevelled but I'm guessing the screw holes will be but that can be overcome, right?

Oh man, i remember this bass really well. I was after my first ever bass in 1982 but didnt have enough for a Squier. I remember the jazz bass being £250 and the precision at £230. Me and my older brother played them and loved them but with me also being a lefty i was pretty much scuppered. In fact that same year you could pick up a 70's USA precision for £120 and a 60's jazz for under £300 in Glasgow. My brother must have had 3 or 4 during the 80's before settling with a musicman sabre. Ive just acquired a 57 re-issue lefty Fender precision cij which looks identical to the one here minus the pickguard.
