  1. Hi guys I want to expand my bass solo vocabulary and patterns for when I get the nod. I’m a decent improviser but really just looking for some new licks. Can anyone recommend some good solos I could check out and learn? Could be on any instrument but obviously translatable to bass. Going to give Donna Lee a bash as a start - similar suggestions welcome! Thanks! EDIT - I should add that Donna Lee is probably slightly beyond my range as a player but I guess this is the idea!
  2. Really love this movie! Her synth bass playing on Girlfriend Is Better is great too
  3. Reviving an old thread but watched most of the Glasto coverage on the iPlayer - must have clocked 20 or more hours now! Kylie’s bass player is superb - super tight playing, so much so I wondered for a while if it was tracked! Those Sandbergs are lush 😍😍😍
  4. I'd imagine NAMM would have to offer advice to their exhibitors re this particular area?
  5. +1. I think this is my all time favourite bassline. Two notes which straddles two keys seamlessly. Amazingly efficient line.
  6. I worked out costings for my band to perform at a festival in Bangladesh and I think it came to around £10k including all travel, accommodation, Visas, other sundry expenses and musician fees.
  7. Yep - I actually don't associate the sound of a Jazz with zingy top end at all. To me, the sound is round and full like JPJ, or all bridge pickup burp like Jaco. I'm aware that people like Marcus Miller use theirs for bright slappy tappyness, but it's not a sound I could ever see myself needing.
  8. Love them! Usually use La Bella 760FL on my jazz basses. Just the right tension IMO, not too tight and not too bouncy. On the other hand, I feel TI Jazz flats suit my Precision better. Would love to check out Chromes and Fender flats at some point too. Are they comparable to rounds, tension-wise, or a bit looser feeling?
  9. I bought a set of DR Low Rider steels by mistake - I usually use nickel, just put the wrong ones into my shopping basket online! I have to say the difference is quite noticeable, I much prefer the nickels and will be going straight back to them. The steels were verging on harsh at the beginning although have mellowed somewhat. Overall the sound of the nickels is much more pleasing to my ears right throughout the life of the string.
  10. Have to agree. The J Retro I had was very underwhelming. I hated the fact that some of the controls didn't have a centre detent! Might work for some but not for me. I much prefer the passive Jazz Bass sound, although going to look into a series/parallel switch soon
  11. Ah very good, sure it's a great town! I was brought up just a few minutes walk from the Coach Inn. Since moved on to Belfast and back again! Not as much music around the town now as there was even 10 years ago but we still get by
  12. Small world! I play in a band with Gerry Bradley's son, you'd prob remember him?
  13. Hello and welcome from sunny Omagh!
  14. Roy Orbison - Vocal Tom Morello - Electric Guitar Richard Thompson - Acoustic Guitar Joni Mitchell - Piano Stevie Wonder - Organ Jaco - Bass Tower of Power Brass Section Jeff Porcaro - Drums
  15. There's a guy called Stevie Porter who owns a company called Belfast Backline Hire - he can provide PA, drums and everything you need. Highly recommended also
  16. Slightly OT but what also really annoys me is when the strings don't line up exactly over the pole pieces of the pickups - surely this affects the magnetic pull and therefore evenness of tone from string to string.
  17. The way the string angles change past the nut really annoys me lol. How many bass manufacturers get the basic engineering principles wrong?
  18. Sterilise well and superglue that mother closed!
  19. I've used a Thomann own brand case (Thon) for about 4 years with mine. It's great! Not sure if it has shock mounts etc but it rarely moves off the top of my cab flightcase, either at gigs or in transit, so this isn't really a requirement.
  20. Absolutely gorgeous! Enjoy!
  21. I obsess over note length and attack in most genres of music, this definitely comes from my love of synth and keyboard bass. I don't think I'll ever be perfect but I love trying
  22. What are the Sunbeams like in comparison to Nickel Lo Riders? Has anyone had experience of both? Liking the sound of the Sunbeams, may go for a set next.
  23. I use Lo Riders on a passive Jazz Bass - love the nickel variant but I ordered steel by mistake for my current set and don't like them as much. There's a significant difference in tone to my ears - will be going back to nickel as soon as these are done.
  24. Who remembers LOUD cabinets?
  25. Seems reasonable actually?
