1. Another one to think about is contingency plans should a member not be available. Do they pull the gig or do they get a dep? Equally important should you yourself be unavailable for whatever reason.
2. A rather infamous blues singer over in NI here once punched a woman in the mouth when she grabbed his mic. Absolute chaos!
3. Changing times and changing trends. If a pub or bar owner doesn't understand the positive effect that a band can have on his takings (if presented and marketed right by the venue) then no one can tell him. It's often a risk outlaying a few hundred quid for a band with no guaranteed return. Sadly the way a lot of venues are going nowadays.
4. Give iReal Pro a look - not sure it does all of what you need, but I use it as a double bass practice tool and it is superb.
5. Definitely call in and see Larry Hartke at Sam Ash music on 34th Street (I think)? He's usually there and always has a great story or two. Amazing basses too including high end examples from all the NYC builders (Fodera, Sadowsky etc)
6. Nick was a pleasure to deal with, thanks!
7. Grace Jones (!) tomorrow night in Dublin!
8. Sir Duke! Can never get the runs in the final chorus nailed. All my note choices sound wrong!
9. ^^^^ I have one of those pickups sitting around if you're interested in it - PM me!
10. Just checked out that video of the band covering Spirit of Radio - one of the best live versions I've heard, super accurate to the original!
11. Yeah I love it when he digs in with the 70s Jazz on the Jackson 5 stuff particularly, but give him a washtub bass and he would still rock it like a pro!
12. Probably been done to death on BC, but just had my annual watch of 'This Is It' Absolutely the greatest show on earth, what a pity it never happened. Alex Al on top form on bass, lovely pocket playing with the odd flourish. Spotted a couple of nice SR5s (fretted, fretless) and a 70s Jazz with an array of synth bass too. If you haven't seen it - do yourself a favour and check it out! Superb musicianship all round and a great insight into the world of high level show production. Haven't put my bass down since watching it earlier! Danny

14. My first thought was GK MB500 too, as recommended twice above. Super clean amp.
15. Wow! What is with all the beautiful F Basses on here at the moment? Superb.
16. Geddy Entwistle's later stuff Jaco and anyone who solos bridge pickup really.
17. Played support to The Beach Boys just before they hit the stage, 12,000 people - amazing gig! Also did a similar sized (but slightly smaller) gig supporting the Quo.
18. Hi All Thinking about investing in a decent practice setup for home. It ideally would be portable so I could bring on tour etc and practice in hotels and the like. Would be using electric bass only. My thoughts are something along the lines of: - Bass - Practice Device - Decent Set of Headphones (over ear) - MP3 Player for playing along A drum machine or metronome would be useful. What’s everybody using these days? I had a Korg Pandora a few years back but lost it in a house move! Thanks D
19. Bass > Shure Wireless > REDDI Direct Box (to PA) > Aguilar DB751 > Aguilar DB410 > Sennheiser IEM system > Ultimate Ears UE11 Pro buds
20. Brilliant gig, Flea used his shell pink Fender Jazz hybrid with a single humbucker in the Stingray position - surely going to be a Custom Shop line of these? Sparkling tone! Usual array of GK 4x10 and 1x15 cabinets too. I think I spotted a silver Modulus too used in By The Way (tuned to drop D) Catch them if you can!
21. Genz Benz - had one myself and never got on with the tone!
22.
I went through Rotosound (too tight), Thomastik (too loose) and D'addario (too tight) before setting on La Bellas. I've also played basses with Fenders on and they were pretty good. I think there is a lot of variation in tension and for me it was the La Bellas that nailed it. You just need to find the ones that suit you. See if you can pick a second hand set up in the marketplace or take a punt on some Fenders.
Ageee exactly re: your tension findings, I went through exactly the same strings before settling on 760FL LaBellas.
23. My choice would be an Aguilar Tonehammer 500 which you could find used within your budget, it could replace any larger head too for bigger gigs.
24. Class! Health to enjoy!
