1. Superb mate, congratulations! The first act to be announced for Glasto 2010 - I'll definitely make a mental note to come and see you at it!
2. I dunno where I'd be without this forum either. Over the years, it has provided me with a wealth of information, problem solving, recommendations on new products to test/buy (which has proven expensive!), and it's by-and-large filled a great bunch of helpful, friendly people. Hear hear!
3. Is the string spacing at the bridge the same? Sometimes even 1mm of difference can feel like you're playing a totally different bass. Danny
4. I've sent a message to our site Admin, phatmonkey, so he should be in touch with you shortly! Danny
5. Some great porn
6. You'd be surprised, fatgoogle - there are a lot of lurkers around here from Northern Ireland that I know of, and I'd say the same for people from the South! Watch this space
7. OT - but who'd be up for an Irish Bass Bash sometime, perhaps in the New Year?

My Gigs

Hello all, Just thought I'd start a thread to keep those in Northern Ireland informed of when and where I'm playing, in case anyone feels like coming to see a fellow BC'er embarrass himself some night! I'm working on a week-by-week basis at the moment, so I'll probably update the list every week. At the moment, the diary looks as follows: Fri 9 Oct - tbc, Magherafelt Sat 10 Oct - Main Street, Omagh Fri 16 Oct - The Kiln, Larne Sat 17 Oct - Strangford Arms, Newtownards Sun 18 Oct - The Point, Lisburn Sat 24 Oct - tbc, Newry Tues 27 Oct - Culloden Hotel, Belfast Thurs 29 Oct - Belfast Castle, Belfast Fri 30 Oct - tbc, Magherafelt Sat 31 Oct - tbc, Armagh Sat 14 Nov - tbc, Newry Mon 16 Nov - tbc, Belfast Sat 21 Nov - Christmas Lights Event, Enniskillen Fri 27 Nov - Hilton Hotel, Belfast Sat 28 Nov - tbc, Armagh Fri 4 Dec - Lough Erne Resort Hotel, Enniskillen Sat 5 Dec - Hilton Hotel, Belfast Tues 8 Dec - Crawfordsburn Inn, Belfast Fri 11 Dec - Hilton Hotel, Belfast Sat 12 Dec - Hilton Hotel, Belfast Thurs 17 Dec - tbc, Belfast Fri 18 Dec - tbc, Belfast Sat 19 Dec - tbc, Belfast Tues 22 Dec- Hilton Hotel, Belfast Thurs 31 Dec - tbc, Belfast Fri 1 Jan 2010 - Electric Hooley Festival, Cookstown Sun 2 May - Phil Lynott Memorial Night, Arklow If anyone from NI is reading, it'd be great to see some of you, there'll be a pint waiting for those interested! Regards, Danny
9. You'll always get pr*cks like that Dave. If the groom wasn't happy, think of how many people enjoyed themselves, which means potential bookings in future! As long as your agent sees your side of the story, you'll be fine for gigs in future. Rise above it mate, I'm sure you were great! Danny
10. I'd have it in a flash if I had the money and need. It's the kind of bass I could see myself using for theatre work - slightly shorter scale, wide range of tones from the pickups and preamp, and an absolute beauty to boot! Danny
11. If you're not comfortable being the frontman, you'll undoubtedly enjoy your role in the band so much more by stepping back and doing your bit on the bass, it sounds like you've made the right choice on that front. With regards getting a new frontman - I don't think it'll be as easy as it sounds. A new singer can totally change the sound of the group as a whole. You'll have to be prepared to accommodate his/her new style, musical tastes, expectations, ambitions etc, and try to work with him/her on that. In saying that though, there are plenty of lead singers out there who yearn for a ready-made, full band to hook up with, especially one that has been playing together for a length of time and is therefore tight and has a few contacts locally. Best of luck with your search anyway Alex, and let us know how things pan out! Danny
12. Gigging tonight with an amp I got a lend of this week - an Ashdown MAG 4x10 combo. Sounded great at rehearsal, now for the true test! Supporting Status Quo tomorrow night too so hopefully should have a few updates on this thread over the weekend
13. Used an Ashdown MAG 4x10 combo last night at our new rehearsal room, and it sounded GREAT! Slight touch of boost on the Bass, Low Mid and Mid controls made my Jazz Bass sound fantastic. Competing with 2 guitarists, a keyboard player and a loud drummer (aren't they all?), I had the gain set at around 90% and the output at around 30%. Plenty of power to spare!
14.
Fingerstyle - Lenny Kravtiz's bass sound on the whole Mama Said album, especially Always On The Run and It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over.
The great Henry Hirsch! I met him once and we talked in depth about his bass playing, style and tone. In particular, I recall him talking about It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over - he used a generic American Jazz Bass straight into the desk, with the gain maxed out as much as possible just to the point before distortion, hence the super fat sound. Amazing that something so simple can sound so good - although that always has been my attraction to the Fender Jazz Bass I guess! Danny
15. The Black Keys are a pretty good rock band who don't have a bassist - I always miss it when I listen to them though.
16. Just over four hours on sale - and they're SOLD pending the usual!
17. Hello all, Up for sale is a set of brand new, unused Wizard 64 Jazz pickups. I bought these from Andy a few months ago, with the intention of installing them on a Jazz Bass of mine, but then I went and bought a Jazz with a set pre-installed anyway! They come in the original box, with the red paper, and a length of cloth-covered wire attached to each pickup. Unfortunately I don't have a camera to take a photo of them, but they really are untouched. Buy them now for £55 inc. P+P, and save £15 off the list price for what is essentially a gleaming new set of great pickups. Regards, Danny
18. I'm in a couple of bands, both of which I have a different role in the decision-making process. In one of them, we leave all the decisions about song-choices to the front man, as he knows best which songs he's capable of doing and more importantly, confident with. In another band, the decisions about songs and gigs and all promotion work are handled by myself and the other co-founder, who plays keys. I very much enjoy being a part of both, and I certainly have learned lessons from both roles which have been useful in the other band.
19. That really does look the canine's reproductive organs. Can't wait to see it finished
20.
Huh? Si
The control cavity cover itself would be easy, but what I mean is the surround, as shown below:
21. I've taken a SSII apart before, just to out of curiosity after I first bought it really! It was quite an interesting experience - Warwick clearly are one of the best manufacturers of bass guitars in the world, every cut and join was absolutely seamless and the hardware was a snug fit all over. Never got as far as taking the control cavity surround off though - I can imagine that would be considerably more tricky than removing the bridge, tuners etc. I would advise taking measurements (ie bridge height, saddle height, pickup height, distance from strings, 12th fret height etc) before you remove the parts, especially if you're currently happy with how the bass plays. That way, you can put it back together again quickly and make sure the action is exactly the same as before. Danny
22. Check out Sheehan's boots, immense! What's the point of having a double neck with two necks exactly the same though? Am I missing something, or is it just for showmanship?
23. Sounds excellent Nick! I love doing theatre work, it's a great feeling towards the end of the week when you start to anticipate your favourite sections in advance, and memorise them instead of just reading. Let us know how the live shows go! Danny
24. I've always loved the sound from my ABM 500w 2x10 combo, not a bit wooly but with plenty of warmth on tap if need be. The option to blend a valve pre with a SS one means you can get many usable tones without even having to change the EQ settings. I have, however, had to get it repaired in the past, and I have a feeling the speakers need replacing very soon, but it doesn't put me off using them at all - I don't mind maintaining good sounding gear which has paid for itself over and over!
25. What a great tone!
