Did you manage to see what amp setup he was using? Sounds as if there might be some trickery going on somewhere if he's getting a punchy sound from an EB-0!
2. I've moved the thread to Bass Guitars, as it's most certainly 'On Topic' Apologies to the OP if this wasn't your original intention. Danny
3. I must say that I actually prefer the sound of the P pickup solo'ed on the Franklin to the '71. The very fact that you have at least two totally different sounds on top of that from the J solo and P/J together adds yet more sonic value IMO. So, in my opinion: Twist!
4. I love these kinds of threads! You truly are BC's answer to Ed Friedland Gonna have a listen now!
5.
My keyboard player turned down the Kelly Rowland gig... I turned down the Corinne Bailey Rae gig...
Wow, it sounds like London really is the place to be for session work!
6. To save duplicating threads, and to keep all the valuable information in one thread, please use THIS thread from now on guys
7. This thread might be slightly better manned in the Recording forum
8. A definite yes, only have the girlfriend to convince and them I'm outta there!
9. Little Feat Delbert McClinton JJ Cale
10. By all accounts, the Yamaha Attitude models were incredible basses for the money. I think the Plus was one of the more basic models, but at £110 you can't afford NOT to buy it IMO!
11. I'm also contemplating taking drum lessons. It seems like the perfect addition to any bassist's repetoire really, a greater sense of groove and timing will always prove useful. The rhythm section is the heartbeat of any band, and as we all know, the more in-tune a bass player is with his drummer, the better the band as a whole sounds. Knowing what things are like from his side of the kit will definitely help achieve this!
12.
Doing these kinds of gigs will increase your musical knowledge & stretch you as a player. I've learned more about music by playing in covers bands than I ever did by playing originals.
+1. You'll improve immeasurably playing regularly in a covers band once or twice a week. Learning a bit about the playing styles of the bassists you're covering is a valuable asset in the long term.
13.
I got a branners Geddy Lee off a UK gadgey on the 'bay - well off the bay actually - and after minimal setting up it was fine.
The MIJ basses are notoriously more consistent in terms of quality control though, I don't think I've played one yet that I didn't like the feel of!
14.
Improve the proofing. I could do a small amount for free, we're at the outer limits of my philanthropy here though.
+1. I'm a real stickler for proper spelling and grammar, and would definitely give you a hand with it if need be. I don't read BGM that often, but some other suggestions from me for any good bass mag IMO would include: - A GOOD contents section - More gear reviews (some just don't have enough) - Reviews of pedals, cables, tuners etc as well as amps and basses - Transcriptions of popular tunes - Bassists Wanted/Available ...and would have less of: - interviews with left-field players - transcriptions of left-field tunes The reason why I've included the above two points is that I think any mainstream bass mag should include mostly mainstream coverage. An interview with MeShell Swallow once in a while is great, but when I read a magazine filled full of interviews of bassists I've never even heard of, it does put me off buying the next one somewhat.
15. Looks the business, I might well invest in a wireless solution now over the next couple of months, provided I can justify it with a relatively full gigs calendar!
16. Yeah, there was a discussion on this a few months ago about the onboard valve preamp - would love to hear how it sounds! Personally I'd just go down the outboard valve route, keep as much of the wood on the body as possible for tone reasons!
17.
Wouldn't that be 'Third Time Lucky'?
Lol, I hoped no-one had used that one yet when I first read the thread! Beat me to it by 4 minutes
18. Calm down guys! The OP obviously doesn't know much about our forum or flatwound strings, so it's probably not a good idea to put him off both just because of this thread. We all had to start somewhere! I think the $100 remark was taken too seriously to begin with, maybe the OP was a little sensitive, but let's put that shaky start behind us and try to help a newbie out! FWIW I've used two brands of flats in the past: Rotosound - I found that the tension was a little too high for my tastes, but they sounded good on my fretless P TI Jazz - My preferred choice. Nice tension but a little grippy at the start, this does wear down a bit over time though!
19.
Mornington Cresent
You shouldn't have been allowed to announce that without first collecting the Easy Pass at Euston surely?
20.
Danny Thompson
+1. What a fantastic player!
21. I'd recommend using a cabinet with 10" speakers, or a very efficient 12". You'll want as much articulation as possible when using an acoustic instrument - mud is definitely not your friend! Why the change of instrument? It'll be a bit strange having a 'john_the_guitar' around here
22. It's not the size - it's how you use it! I think we all go through that 'big amp = good idea' phase though, thankfully I'm out at the other side and still have a reasonably functional spine
23. Played a dep gig last night with a local classic rock band. The venue was pretty small (I'd say 150 max would be a comfortable number to have inside it), but there must have been 300 people there! We were playing in a corner with our backs pretty much against the wall, and there were people standing and dancing literally 2ft away from where I was playing. Caused a bit of hell with the mic stands from time to time but it was a unique experience! Showed up without any practice and no setlist beforehand, but it went great! Standard pub fare really, I'm sure there's a band like this in every town in the country. Went straight from my Bravewood Jazz into the desk and had an onstage monitor to hear myself - it sounded great. The guitarist was full of compliments for my tone too, I just solo'ed the neck pickup with the tone up full and I got a very meaty, Precision-like sound. The Wizards really do work their magic in a live situation! Feeling pretty chuffed today, their bassist (whom I filled in for) has a lot of other commitments so I might score a few more gigs in the coming months! Danny
24. At the moment I'm working my way through Jamerson's part in 'What's Going On'. I think I'm slowly getting closer to understanding his playing style, but I'll NEVER be able to play it with one finger!
25.
Wizard!
+1. You can get one wound to your own specifications for the same price as a standard, just tell Andy what sound you'd like and he'll work his magic (pun very much intended)
