1. Wow, that is a truly spectacular bass. Congrats on your new arrival Steve!
2. He seems like a nice guy, very modest about his equipment. His videos are always a great watch too, the guy has buckets of talent!
3.
Exactly! It sounds louder because you are boosting the treble and bass and cutting the mids. But in a band context you sometimes need the mids to cut through the other instruments so it can be the wrong sort of loud. Sometimes its better to turn off the pre-shape and turn up the volume.
+1. This will make the amp seem louder to you, but not the other band members, which reduces the risk of being asked to turn down (who does anyway? )
4. Front is Neck, and Rear is Bridge, unless there's some sort of Metric-Imperial conversion going on with pickup naming now too!
5. Wow, that was an absolutely fantastic watch. I got a lend of the DVD recently only to find out that the region wasn't supported on my DVD player - boy was I missing out!
6. So many great tunes listed here already - I'd learn them all! In the true spirit of Motown Friday, I'd recommend anything by Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye etc etc etc, the list goes on! Particular favourite If you come from a punk background (which I know you do!), it'll expand your playing repertoire beyond belief when you learn some of these sorts of stuff. Syncopated, non-root based playing at it's best.
7. I'd recommend buying a used OLP MM copy and replacing the pickup/circuit (maybe not both for under your budget though)
8. I dealt with a guy called Napper down there, I'm not sure if he's still around, but I'm sure he'll be able to talk you through your options if you got on the blower/dropped him an email! They didn't have some Warwick parts listed on their website that I wanted, but he was happy to order them in for me.
9. I'm pretty sure that Aguilar supply covers for their cabs? You could give the Bass Merchant a call, they stock a lot of Aggie gear and should be able to help you out one way or the other! I've dealt with them in the past and they're very helpful.
10. Around a year ago I tried to set up an endorsement deal with Rotosound for strings for my band, which consisted of them supplying strings for - - 2 Electric Guitars - 1 Acoustic Guitar - 1 Electric Bass - 1 Electric Mandolin - 1 Electric Fiddle ...and also drumsticks for the drummer. The deal they were offering was absolute pants, it would have actually worked out cheaper to strike a deal with a supplier than to get them direct from the company! So my advice is - don't get ripped off. If you all use the strings religiously, go for it, otherwise you might find that you're stuck promoting something that you don't believe in.
11.
What the hell is seeding a torrent, can anyone do it, and is it considered impolite to do it at the dinner table?
It just basically means that you're hosting the file for others to download.
12.
Thing is, like Kev pointed out in the overpriced listing thread, how could you ever prove it was genuine? I'm sure umpteen million of these things were turned out and it wouldn't surprise me if Fender used different suppliers for screws. So even if there was a way of identifying an early seventies screw there would be no way of knowing if it had ever been near the Fender factory.
That's true, but presuming it was a genuinely identifiable Fender 1973 screw, it'd be a steal! I've seen original neckplates and the like go for £300+, which to me is a justifiable sum for the value they'd impart to a period instrument (although their provenance is a lot easier come by) Danny
13. Great find, they look superb! 2 of those plus a couple of floor mounted lights would be enough for any full band.
14. Slightly OT, but did anyone catch the guy playing it on Sky1's 'Don't Forget The Lyrics' last night? He left out one of the notes about 3 notes into the opening riff, sounded very strange!
15. You can see his point though. Say you had a 1973 Jazz Bass which was all original except for one pickguard screw that you lost back in the day. Technically, this instrument isn't all original, and if you had one more period correct screw then you'd surely be able to advertise it as such. Of course, we can argue the merits of having the bass with exactly the same parts as when it left the Fender factory, but in essence it would be an all-original 1973 Fender Jazz Bass, and therefore could be advertised as one. It's a bargain IMO, if it'll increase the selling price of the bass by £5-600 then a tenner is nowt to pay
16.
+1. Lighten up, everyone. We could all learn a lot from this.
+2. The guy's intentions are good, I don't think he's immediately intent on challenging against the big cabinet makers in this world, but if it does sound good in the end, then who knows!
17.
Shouldn't it be BFB for Bare Faced Bass?
+1?
18.
occludes to a cab or just a powersection, sort the grammar out chap.
Alludes to? The irony is simply delicious
19.
at the minute my personal fave is the neck pickup up full, and the bridge turned right down, does an excellent P Bass impression.
+1 to that! WHAT A TONE!
20. I think they're generally held in higher regard than the new models, as they were all built in the UK back in the days when Ashdown had seemingly better quality control. As far as worth is concerned - they will probably go for less on eBay due to being older, but I'd imagine that any bass player in the know would give you a good price for it!
21. FWIW I use the 84's in one of my Jazz Basses, and I think your description of 'big bass and pokey treble' could definitely be achieved with them. Didn't even know that Wizard had a new pickup out, must take a look now!
22.
I for one would love to hear a proto-type
+1. I know we have a couple of other cabinet builders on the forum, but it doesn't hurt to have more creative people with new ideas on how to amplify our instrument. I like the concept of the 'plug and play' idea. As we all know, some EQ sections out there colour the sound vastly, even when left flat. Of course, this will suit some basses more than others! Will be watching this thread closely over the coming weeks - best of luck to you
23.
Audiences love busy blues bass players but they are generally not liked by the other musicians.
+1 on that point. It's got a lot to do with the ego of the band leader sometimes (in that they don't want any spotlight taken away from them), but the bassists who get the most work in a blues environment are always the ones who don't play overly busy. Of course it's all about taste. If the song needs more energy, you know how to add it by playing a few more notes here and there to drive it. I always find it's easier to get busier when required than to get less busy, if you get my drift.
24. Not a single reply! FWIW I downloaded the Guitar Pro file of the song you asked for, it includes Bass, Drums and the works, but haven't been able to check it out or compare it to the original because I've not been using my own computer (complete with GP4) for the last few days. I've attached the file anyway for your perusal in case you have the necessary software. It's widely available for download from the net too if you need it. Hope this helps Danny
25. As you said, you've went for simplicity and efficiency with your cabs, so IMO the logo shouldn't be any different. Being identified on TV wouldn't really be a priority of mine when designing the logo. At the end of the day, your cabs will be known by bass players for the right reasons, and once you build a reputation for quality and sound (which you hopefully will), then surely this will be your main selling point. I think the aesthetics of the cab come second to this, and I'm sure that sensible bass players buying cabs place visuals near the bottom of their checklist. Danny
