1. Go for it mate! If you can afford to keep your day job, then you'll have something to fall back on if you have a bad month in the shop etc. +1 on whoever said about stocking the emergency items, such as strings, leads, straps and so on. It might be worthwhile to set up a repair side of things too, so I'd investigate if there are any luthiers or amp techs around your area who may be willing to strike some sort of exclusive deal with you. Failing that, your mate could always study it during the day if the shop is quiet - a few books and tools to practice with and Robert's your mother's brother? An online side of your business is also a good idea. It allows you to compete on a national scale, and you'll also find that sometimes people in your local area will find this handier than stopping by your shop, for various reasons. Maybe even an eBay shop? Hope this helps mate, and I really do wish you the best of luck for your new venture. Danny
 2.
I almost certain that was photoshopped....as "The Railway "sign is reversed
Thanks for setting the record straight, was a bit unsure there for a moment myself!
 3.
One of my fav lines of his: Violent and funky
I've never heard that song before, but is it just me or is his timing all over the shop? I'd have taken a more laid back approach to that line I think, but then again, I'm not a world famous bass player for a reason I suppose
 4. +1 for moving up the HK ladder, my band uses the Actor DX speaker system and it's simply superb, although I'd assume, a little too big for your needs! As has been said above, I'd stick with simply putting the bass drum through the PA. You'll find that, depending on the venue, this will be more than enough to achieve a good balance of levels.
 5. First Bass - Encore 3/4 Length Precision Copy Cost - £100 Today - £114 WHAT? That's cheaper than most chainsaws (which is what it sounded like)
 6. I normally make some drum loops using Guitar Pro and then save them as MIDI files - serves as a great practice tool, although it does cost $30 or something to download. I'm sure there would be some sort of free equivalent out there? As far as the original question goes - definitely drum machine. You'll get a much better idea of phrasing and locking in with patterns than you would playing along with a metronome.
 7.
The worst version ever of Dancing in the street was by Mick Jagger and David Bowie. abysmal.
+1. They really look like they're having a laugh in the video too, which makes me doubt their intentions murdering a Motown classic really!
 8.
I wedge mine between the A or D string on the bridge where the string sits on the saddle.
Is there a chance that it may dampen the string a bit though? Normally I wedge my pick between the body and the scratchplate a la JE and others, along the top edge - always comes in handy! Very interesting thread here, I (like so many others it seems!) only really picked one up recently* and have totally rethought how I play because of it. Although it's not useful in all styles, it certainly has opened up new avenues for me. Actually, come to think of it, I haven't played slap bass in 6 months! *pun very much intended
 9. Some of my favourites include - John Entwistle Paul McCartney Jack Bruce John Paul Jones John Glascock Andy Fraser Jet Harris Ace Kefford Pino Palladino Stuart Zender
 10.
So, if the knobs at noon on this amp result in a mid-scoop, I guess that get a flat EQ setting out of these you have to boost the mids, which due to the design also boosts the treble so you'll have to reduce the treble. Am I right?
I don't think it boosts the treble as such. Increasing the mids will most likely have the effect of adding a curve to the sound, peaking at the 300hz area (which I suspect is the frequency that the Mid knob affects based on my experiences with other Hartke amps). I should think that the curve won't affect the frequencies accessed by the Treble knob (somewhere around 4-6khz, peaking at 5?) Of course this is just my own speculative analysis! I'm definitely interested in buying one of these heads very soon, despite the preset mid-scoop which is something I'd have left out personally.
 11. I'm pretty sure John will accommodate you with regard to the pickup switch, probably best to post over on his affiliate forum to check
 12. For brunch I had a Big Mac meal with a strawberry milkshake - disgusting food normally but it appears to be the perfect hangover cure! It's got me right back on top form, which is good because I'm in the middle of a hectic week (8 gigs in 7 days!) Long live junk food
 13.
"The new lead is perfect for connecting a guitar to a guitar amp........" It seems they have thought of everything!!!
14.
Can we agree to disagree or is that not enough?
I think that might be the best option for everyone! Fender Precisions are definitely not the most suited bass for heavy metal music (I'd imagine it has one string less than required for a start!), but if it sounds good, then why not? +1 for whoever said that Precisions sound crap on their own but great in a mix. I've noticed this a few times, although I am generally a fan of the basic Precision sound on it's own too! Danny
 15. So are they actually flatwound, or just a smoother roundwound?
 16. Just interested as to how many of our members have joined/actively use Talkbass! Personally I've never felt the need to use it as I find this forum a lot more relevant and informative. The idea of dealing with our inferior trans-atlantic brethren doesn't exactly appeal to me either! Actually, on that note, I'm just wondering what gear I'd currently be using had it not been for Basschat. I can't even begin to think how much this forum has affected my buying (and selling) habits Danny

 18. The Avalon U5 is very highly thought of by some on this forum, and it also serves as a top-of-the-range DI box for live or studio work. I think Geddy Lee uses one too if that's any indication of quality?
 19.
The Shuttle 6.0 + Compact is going to be my exact setup soon!
I'm considering exactly the same setup! When are you planning on buying it?
 20.
I would but it's really hard to get custom gauge strings for a 36" scale... Alex
It may be worthwhile looking for a string endorsement, I think Dan (dood) got one from Rotosound (?) at one stage because the strings for his Shuker 7 were so far removed from theirr regular gauges. If you're gigging a lot, they'd probably love to have you endorsing them!
 21. The 2003 Licensing Act states that children are allowed on licensed premises at all times when accompanied by someone over 18 years of age. You can check it out HERE although I'm not sure of the section! Members clubs can enforce their own laws though, so unfortunately if they don't permit it then your best bet wouldn't be to quote the law, but to persuade the publican privately and see if he/she will see your side of the argument.
 22.
I have to order 6 sets to get custom bass strings now.
How come? Are they blaming you for the error? Sounds like very dodgy business practice. You should forward the original email confirmations for your first order if they want proof.
 23. I don't own a Rickenbacker myself, but I suspect it may well be a simple screw on job as it's simply a superficial addition to your bass. Hope this helps Danny
 24. Watched the gig last night on Sky Arts, never saw any live Lizzy stuff before and it was a fantastic watch! I agree with the comments about Lynott's stagemanship, but IMO he also put in a blinder of a performance on bass! I'm in awe of his ability to seamlessly jump strings using a plectrum, something which I aspire to having only really started teaching myself over the last couple of weeks. On the same note - I normally find myself watching Sky Arts a lot more than the regular music channels these days, there are some brilliant classic live performances every night at 9pm! Always good to know that someone's here to give us a heads-up in case we miss them tho
 25.
I like listening to Dusty Hill. Never going to be in the top 10 of techincal bass players but he's great to listen to/
A bit OT, but Jet Harris of The Shadows is one of those type players for me. Fantastic melodic basslines, but bafflingly simple in their construction and playing!
