+1 for moving up the HK ladder, my band uses the Actor DX speaker system and it's simply superb, although I'd assume, a little too big for your needs! As has been said above, I'd stick with simply putting the bass drum through the PA. You'll find that, depending on the venue, this will be more than enough to achieve a good balance of levels.

I normally make some drum loops using Guitar Pro and then save them as MIDI files - serves as a great practice tool, although it does cost $30 or something to download. I'm sure there would be some sort of free equivalent out there? As far as the original question goes - definitely drum machine. You'll get a much better idea of phrasing and locking in with patterns than you would playing along with a metronome.

Increasing the mids will most likely have the effect of adding a curve to the sound, peaking at the 300hz area (which I suspect is the frequency that the Mid knob affects based on my experiences with other Hartke amps). I should think that the curve won't affect the frequencies accessed by the Treble knob (somewhere around 4-6khz, peaking at 5?) Of course this is just my own speculative analysis! I'm definitely interested in buying one of these heads very soon, despite the preset mid-scoop which is something I'd have left out personally.

I'm pretty sure John will accommodate you with regard to the pickup switch, probably best to post over on his affiliate forum to check

Fender Precisions are definitely not the most suited bass for heavy metal music (I'd imagine it has one string less than required for a start!), but if it sounds good, then why not? +1 for whoever said that Precisions sound crap on their own but great in a mix. Just interested as to how many of our members have joined/actively use Talkbass! Personally I've never felt the need to use it as I find this forum a lot more relevant and informative. If you're gigging a lot, they'd probably love to have you endorsing them!

The 2003 Licensing Act states that children are allowed on licensed premises at all times when accompanied by someone over 18 years of age. Members clubs can enforce their own laws though, so unfortunately if they don't permit it then your best bet wouldn't be to quote the law, but to persuade the publican privately and see if he/she will see your side of the argument.

I don't own a Rickenbacker myself, but I suspect it may well be a simple screw on job as it's simply a superficial addition to your bass. Hope this helps Danny

Watched the gig last night on Sky Arts, never saw any live Lizzy stuff before and it was a fantastic watch! I agree with the comments about Lynott's stagemanship, but IMO he also put in a blinder of a performance on bass! I'm in awe of his ability to seamlessly jump strings using a plectrum, something which I aspire to having only really started teaching myself over the last couple of weeks. On the same note - I normally find myself watching Sky Arts a lot more than the regular music channels these days, there are some brilliant classic live performances every night at 9pm! Always good to know that someone's here to give us a heads-up in case we miss them tho

At the end of the day, it's all relative really. People can hold opinions on whether or not to like the style of a certain bass player, but to dismiss their playing as meaningless nonsense is a bit much, and somewhat insulting to the intelligence of those who hold said bassist in high regard. For example, I can't listen to the bassist out of Muse (or the band really), but I do respect that they're a very talented bunch of guys who are great at what they do. Each to his own, horses for courses etc, but skankdevlar and others were right in saying that to violently criticise someone else's taste in bass players (the basis of this thread) is probably not the best way to conduct oneself on the forum.
