Just ordered an Audere pre for my 70s Jazz.
acidbass replied to neilb's topic in Accessories and Misc
Ooh very tasty! I've been considering getting the same preamp for my primary Jazz, which at the moment has a plain old stack knob configuration. Let us all know how you get on -
VERY nice bass! Were there any issues with changing from a 20 fret neck to a 21 fret?
-
How do you find the difference in fretting the notes? It looks like carpal tunnel waiting to happen
Donkeys years ago i went to Music collage in the states.... And the advice i was given for the audition was.. Try to show some Musicianship.. Rather than just a Bass chops merchant with stick on ears.. [ And at the time i proberly was both ] Whatever you do try and make it sound musical. A chordal arrangement of a tune is usually good for that. Good luck, with whatever you do. I am sure it will be fine. Garry
+1 for the chordal stuff, that always sounds nice! I'd try to include as many grade 8 techniques as possible, but in a tasteful manner. Small sections of tapping, harmonics, slapping and so on can really impress the 'judge'. Don't overdo it though, as most won't want to see a 5 minute summary of your chops, but rather a taster of your overall musical ability.

OG's comment about the mailing list and street team is well worth taking on board too. All it takes is a couple of mates to sign people up during/after gigs and it'll cost you the price of a stamp (plus the stickers and badges which as you know are relatively inexpensive) to supply them with their fan items! I've received some in the past from bands and you always feel that warmth of appreciation when you open the envelope. It's even better when you were loaded at the gig and can't remember signing anything!
sorry but i'm not impressed at all, mind i'm not a Jaco fan either. somebody once gave me a Jaco cd to listen to & i tried to like it but to me it was just a load of self indulgent sh*te.
I should think that's to be expected of most musician's solo albums I've never listened to Jaco in a band context before, having only bought his eponymous first album. I don't consider myself a fan of Jazz music at all, but it's definitely worth a listen if you're a bass player. Those performances with Joni Mitchell on Youtube are really superb by the way, cheers for the links guys!

I'm a fan of Jaco's playing but I can imagine that Joe Bloggs in the audience at that Joni gig probably wants him to get it over with ASAP!
The Move = great band.
+2, I'd never listened to them before (bar Blackberry Way), but after watching the video you posted I've ordered the 4CD Anthology, saw it at a great price by pure coincidence! Should be here before Christmas
Very mysterious basses - find one, and you'll be a rich man (or woman).
Steve Currie's exact bass was on eBay not so long ago - I think it passed through Entwistle's hands before reaching him, which makes it an even bigger piece of rock history!
Not really sure what you're asking. I go louder and quieter when I think the song needs it - I normally lead that side of things onstage, trying to support the singer as much as possible. One thing I tell all the guys is that the turn-around on any sequence is the place to take it up a notch or take it down a notch, and I'm trying to get the drummer to mimic whatever rhythmic thing I do on the turn-around to either increase or decrease intensity. Apart from that, I tend not to play every note as loud as each other. I tend to accent or camouflage certain notes 'cos that's just how I like to phrase things. Everything grooves more that way, I think. Are those the kinds of things you meant?
Great answer! The part you said about going up and down a notch is a good point, I tend to play at a consistent level where I can easily shift up or down depending on what the song needs/the way the band is going. Definitely makes for a more interesting performance for me and (hopefully) the audience!
Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. The verse part is pretty straightforward, albeit with some timing subtleties. But the notoriously tricky horn break (which repeats every chorus) was a right b*st*rd. Took about four hours to nail it. Being able to play it is sweeeet though, and now I'm annoying the hell out of my girlfriend with it. Sounds great on a Precision.
Great bassline! I'm never sure if I'm playing the little run in the last chorus right (the one that starts with the Fm arpeggio type bit) but hey!

I currently own 3 fretted Jazz Basses, 1 fretless Precision, an Ibanez 4 string and a HB Beatbass - covers my sonic needs perfectly!
Difficult considering he died in 1981.
Whoops! I wonder if his family still has a hand in the company?
'sometimes I can not avoid the fact that I just like the sound of cheap mass produced gear'
Great point. I like to take quite a simple approach to bass playing, passive basses through simple 3 band EQ preamps. The most liberating experience I've had recently with regards to bass was playing a Squier Jazz through an Ashdown Electric Blue practice amp - it sounded great!
That tonika bass, apart from the shape of the body, looks a lot like the bass the guy in flight of the conchords uses. I wonder if he's using a soviet era bass then? Interesting.
That was my initial thought too! I'd love to know what type he actually uses, I'd buy one just for comic value more than anything else!
I play Blues
Same here, and I LOVE it! Although it's quite a simple form of music, it's amazing what the right group of musicians can do with it. I know I basically use the same basslines and fills for the entire set though
Are you the Moderator? I've come on this forum by mistake
Stop saying that, Warwickhunt, of course he's the moderator! To the original poster - cracking bass, I know a guy locally who owns one just like it and it sounds fantastic!

Rush / Geddy Fans... Isolated Tom Sawyer Bass Track!
acidbass replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
Sounds almost chorused, with a 5th above added in parts - any idea how he achieved this? -
I tried one of the new line Hiwatt 200w Bass heads a few months ago in a music shop near me - absolutely superb tone through the matching cab, but I'd imagine that would be forgotten about after lugging the thing to and from gigs! If I had a roadie, I'd probably still be saving to buy it as we speak! And I wasn't aware that Dave Reeves was producing a new Bass head until now, it looks awesome!
-
Yes, they are essentially the same head. Have a look at THIS PDF file and you'll see that all of the specs are exactly the same, it's just the small change in cosmetics that's the difference! Hope this helps :0 Danny

Congrats on the deal While we're on the topic of Vintage basses - I don't think I've seen anyone play so many duff notes confidently than the guy demoing the EST96 MM copy that they sell, has anyone seen that video?
-
Managed to blag a VIP ticket to see them in Belfast a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't a huge fan before seeing them, but what a FANTASTIC live band! Managed to get a pint with Bobby G and Mani afterwards too in the backstage area, top guys!

Reuel's bass travel plan. (Shipping has now been paid for!)
acidbass replied to Shockwave's topic in General Discussion
I think that a few people have over-stepped the mark when expressing their views on the subject matter. By now, we have all realised the wrongs of the Jakebass' actions. I think that any further commenting on the topic would simply serve to escalate the hatred towards a forum member, and this is not a practice that we as a Moderation team condone. Thankfully, the situation has been more-or-less resolved. Those who have generously volunteered to handle the exchange and delivery of the item in question are firmly in contact with each other by now. I assume that those who hold particularly strong opinions on the matter (as expressed on the previous few pages of the thread) are also in private contact with each other, and so this thread simple serves as a public outlet for these negative feelings. This thread has been posted in the 'General Bass Discussion' forum, and will remain here as a guide for Shockwave and others to keep a record of the guitar's progress back to it's new owner. However, there is not much more that can be done to improve the outcome of this situation. As a consequence, this thread has been locked. Lastly, I'd like to extend a very meaningful thanks to all who contributed to the delivery fund. This shows that the community are much more than just a bunch of people who post on this forum. Thanks, Danny -

IMO it's just a horrible synth-like mess compared to his earlier tone as heard on Live At Leeds etc (which was fantastic)! But each to their own and all that
