IMO it's just a horrible synth-like mess compared to his earlier tone as heard on Live At Leeds etc (which was fantastic)! But each to their own and all that

There are a lot of recommendations for round, flat and half wound strings in THIS thread that might save you a lot of time Danny
Over the last few years I've gone from an active bass with 3-band EQ with switchable mids into a rack preamp with 'aural enhancer' and 4-band EQ with dual semi-parametric mids, to a passive bass into a rack preamp with no EQ other than a handful of presets. It was a slightly scary couple of leaps but I love where I've landed! Join me!
Interesting approach, I've made a similar leap from 3 band EQ active to passive and keeping my amp options as uncomplicated as possible. There's nothing that can beat a brilliant, simple tone IMO, although I suppose one man's great tone is another man's noise (John Entwistle's sound in his later years springs to mind!)

Just type your band's name into Myspace. How many serious bands do you know that don't have one?

Bass Parts Resource - good selection, good prices and fast delivery. As with all Fender scratchplates though - you may find that the screw hole positions are slightly different as models are updated/upgraded over the years, if you're worried then getting one custom made might be an option to consider!
I'm studying options at the moment and I have an idea of what I'm looking for, but I'm open to trade suggestions before I make my next move. Neos, ceramics, single cabs, pairs... try me...!
I bet a cab with some 12's would make those Jazz and P Basses sound sweet!

Everyone has their own brand bias - justifiable or not. Isn't that what discussion forums are for?
I was gigging in Guildford one night about ten years ago when Mr Foxton walked into the pub. Funnily enough, we were in the middle of an acoustic set and we were playing "Tube Station" as he came in! Anyway, he stood at the back of the pub and watched us until we finished our set. Then he came over, bought us all a beer, and sat with us 'til we had to go back on. He was a really nice guy, very modest and unassuming, and it was a pleasure to talk to him. I've seen him a few times since around and about and he still remembers me each time. Top chap.
Great story! It's always a nice thing when your favourite players turn out to be genuinely decent guys.

They definitely do have a lot of work to do if they are to be held in the same stead as companies such as Trace and Ampeg, but FWIW I do have a lot of love for their amplifiers (that I've tried anyway)
-
I hope all of this criticism can be justified when the amp is released. Remember that Mark Gooday had a hand in designing Trace Elliot amps when they were made in the UK, and remember the big 8xKT88 amp that they made? If it's anything like the V8, Ashdown will have taken a step forward. I know that most of their business comes from the fact that they have a mountain of endorsees in the UK, but my EVOII 2x10 combo does sound brilliant nonetheless despite my non-pro status!
-
I believe he also used an Ibanez 4001 copy for some of their stuff? Top quality bassist, really underrated.

Very interesting! Is there really any point in having tuning pegs on them at all I wonder? The one with the metallic green/blue finish looks gorgeous, I don't think I'd venture out on stage with one though for fear of being confused with a member of Spinal Tap or something.

I'd probably choose one of those Alembics with the multitude of knobs and switches - that way, if I was stuck on a desert island, I'd DEFINITELY have the time to figure it out properly!

I was a little wary of putting flatwounds on my SSII at first too, because I thought (probably the same as you) that it would detract somewhat from the growly, bright characteristics that most Warwicks are known for. However, I put on a set of Thomastik flats and was pleasantly surprised. The tension was a lot higher though, so a little adjusting of the truss rod was needed to maintain the same action. The sound was great, totally different to the sort you get with roundwounds, very vintage! I'd highly recommend putting them on your Fortress if you're after a 50's/60's style sound. Let us know what you decide to do either way

Someone (I'm not sure who) once said that Jazz is one of the few genres where the people playing it enjoy themselves more than the people listening to it From my time playing in a free improv Jazz ensemble, I tend to agree. It is truly great fun, but I wouldn't like to be on the other side of the PA speakers! That was however extremely experimental music, I know there are a lot more structured and listenable forms out there!
Cheers guys, that has explained alot. Can you plug the bass and guitars straight into the mixer and then back to our amps??
It's pretty much all been said, but to simplify the brilliant responses given by Bod2, Happy Jack and Stewart, it goes like this -

Guitar to
Amp to
Microphone to
Mixing Desk to
PA Speakers

..all connected using the required cables. If you wanted, you could put an effect between points 1 and 2, or even 4 and 5 For bass, it's simply -

Bass Guitar to
DI Box to
Mixing Desk to
PA Speakers

You can then take a connection out from the DI box into your amp to hear yourself on stage. And for vocals, simply -

Microphone to
Mixing Desk to
PA Speakers

The above is also true for mic'ing drums. Hope this helps mate

New Squarepusher album - 'Just A Souvenir' - monster bass album
acidbass replied to urb's topic in General Discussion
I got the album last week from the internet and was largely disappointed (as discussed in another thread somewhere on here!). I'd never heard his music before, and decided to give it a listen after many good reviews on BC, but sadly the first track on the album is the only one I'd go back to. I'm not normally a fan of Jazz-tinged music though, so perhaps I jumped in at the deep end! Oh well, horses for courses I suppose -
Actually that should apply to ALL Musicians... Garry
Agreed. I've had lessons on how to do this in a rock context too, it's the mark of a great musician no matter what the genre.

And mine! Entwistle was notorious for incredible OTT embellishments in his live performance, particularly in songs like 'I Can't Explain' and the famous 'Won't Get Fooled Again'. I suspect I Can See For Miles is something similar, despite being one of his simplest lines in the studio. I'm not sure I've heard the version you refer to though, maybe a link would help us see right through the haze?* * - I absolutely HAD to

I've just totally bitten the Jamerson bug today, what a fantastic musician. Does anyone know if any transcriptions of his basslines are available online or in published form? There are some of his basslines I'd love to learn (Darling Dear!), though I may well sit and transcribe them myself if there isn't any notation available already!
-
That's a lovely bass, Delbert. Now...to the Build thread!
-
I completely agree with you. I used them for around a year, mainly because a lot of my favourite bassists used them. During that 12 month period, I must have broken at least 10 string, even some of their E strings fell victim! I eventually woke up and realised that they aren't worth the cash. I'm currently using Hartkes which are twice as good at half the price!
-
I'd recommend Sound Control, they stock a wide range of RCF stuff as well as lots of other brands! Delivery is reasonable too, although it does depend on what you're ordering.
-
Paul uses his thumb in a downstroke motion, try to keep your nail as short as possible to get that rubbery sound! In THIS video at around 1:06, you can see the technique he uses, although the attack that he uses is slightly exaggerated for video purposes.
I would think they would only use cloth covered wire on vintage reissues – though they might not even use it on those.
That's true. If your bass has normal plastic coated wires, there's no reason why it couldn't be a genuine American Fender. If you want to buy a new wiring kit, there are a few guys on the forum here who'd be more than happy to make you one (check the Affiliates forum for more info). You could, of course, buy one from a parts website, however the P/J VVT configuration might be a slightly harder layout to find.
