1.
Did Cort used to be Kay?
I don't know about that, but I have a couple of MIK Fender guitars that have "Cortech" written inside them. They are pretty good although the frets (on both) were a bit sharp and needed to be rounded off.
 2. Again, if you like everything else about it then a change of strings (especially if you are you using stainless steel round wounds) to something mellower might be the simplest option. After that, a pickup change (are they the default MEC pickups?) could be your second port of call; I changed the MECs on my SS1 to standard EMGs and they do sound fuller and deeper (I also tried the EMG-X range but found them to be very bright and very similar to the original MECs). After that, you could look at a a change of pre-amp, etc. Basically, if I had a bass (or a guitar) where I liked everything else apart from the tone, I'd persevere with it and tweak it until I got it right because it's a lot easier to do that than fix one where you like the tone but hate everything else (cough cough, Gibson Les Paul with 50's profile neck!)
 3. I have a habbit of buying guitar pickups, selling them and then buying the same ones again at a later date; always searching for that elusive perfect tone but ultimately chasing around in circles trying to find it.
 4.
I am not a fan of Prince's music, but I would imagine he would be in anyone top 10 gifted multi insrutumentalists. If anyone fits the bill, he is a definate.
Absolutely agree.
 5. Rob Holliday - guitarist with Curve, The Mission, Marilyn Manson, The Prodigy and Sulpher was also bass player in Gary Numan's band for a few years, and was pretty good.
 6. Just a thought ... there may be posts on here that you wouldn't necessarily want the other party to see. Maybe it would be an idea to move this thread from a publically viewable area to a "members only" area such as "off topic"?
 7. Propaganda - one proper album (the excellent "A secret wish") and a remix album before they split. The band did carry on with one original member and Derek Forbes and Brian McGee, who had both recently left Simple Minds, for one more album (1234) but it lacked the first album's dark edginess and quickly disappeared (as did the band).
 8. I'm in a similar boat; I have quite serious tinnitus in my right ear (sounds like a constant high pitched whistle in my case though) accompanied by a constant feeling of fulness also in the same ear. Occasionally my tubes can also become inflamed sometimes, usually the result of a cold, meaning that I can temporarily lose my hearing except for a fairly muddy sounding mush. Everytime so far, though, my hearing has returned eventually. I use a steroid based nasal spray (Avamys) twice a day and when I feel particularly blocked up I have found that a "bronchial dilator" such as psuedoeffedrine can also help. On the positive side, each time that my hearing's gone it has has returned to normal after a week or so however the tinnitus still remains as does the feeling of fulness and dizziness but after all these years, I've learned to pretty much ignore these and they have minimal impact on my life.
 9. https://youtu.be/GNTH1rhJTLo For me, this is about as good as it gets.
 10. The Pet Shop Boys are one of my favourite guilty pleasures and many of the titles of their songs are quite witty and obviously written with a wink. Eg. After being accused of being a bit dull and boring they go and release a single called Being Boring.
 11. Would a Status graphite neck be more stable?
 12.
The effect of different timbers on the tone of a solid electric guitar/bass is negligible
Uh oh, here we go - can of worms time. I think I'll just sit back and watch this from a safe distance!
 13. Was it clamped between the pick guard and the body? If so, maybe it's to earth the pick guard.
 14.
One thing to note if you are looking at 5 string sets is that the low B is tapered, but the taper ends 50mm from the ball-end so it might not sit on the saddle (which is what you want ideally).
That's good to know, my Spector Euro 5LX needs a tapered B to fit through the string guides on the bridge. Does the nickel 5 string set come with a tapered B?
 15.
When I went to see Willie Nelson, one of the band went off whilst the others were playing and came back with what looked like a tray with a pot of tea and mugs on it. Given Mr Nelson's.... err...interesting past with other substances, this seemed quite amusing. Also what about the famous Rick Wakeman story when he was with Yes. At one of the Free Trade Hall gigs, Rick Wakeman drank eight or nine pints and began thinking of curry. He told his keyboard tech below the stage, "John, we'll go for curry when this is all over." John only heard the word "curry" over all the noise. Twenty minutes later, he brought Rick a chicken Byriani, a few poppadoms, and an onion Bhaji. Rick enjoyed the smell and decided to lay the curry on his organ and eat it. Jon turned to him and said, "I don't believe it - he's eating curry!" Steve Howe was also displeased.
There's also a YouTube clip of Sneaker Pimps doing a gig with one of the guys eating a burger on stage while playing - didn't look very "professional".
 16.
There's a couple on early ac/dc albums, but this is probably the stand out. http://youtu.be/_W-fIn2QZgg
Of course! I'd forgotten about that one.
 17.
I got a Squier bridge from Custom World Guitar Parts. They're in Holland, so no chance of getting clobbered for VAT and import fees. Might be worth asking them. http://www.customworldguitarparts.com/default/
Thanks, I'll look them up.
 18. Spinning off at a tangent to the Chuck Berry thread; So Chuck Berry had his ding-a-ling, David Bowie had his laughing gnome and Paul McCartney had his Frog Chorus but what other "comedy" songs have otherwise credible artists released? By the way, despite considerable evidence to the contrary, I'm not sure that Duran Duran's cover of Public Enemy's "911 is a joke" counts as a comedy song.
 19.
The Ian Hill models have a 'regular' nut, but the neck is thinner back to front on those. Might be the perfect solution for you. And yes, Spectors ARE pretty :-)
There was an Ian Hill model for sale on here a while ago that I almost went for - have a look through the basses for sale section; it might still be available.
 20.
I'm now starting to wonder about the depth of the neck and whether that would be a long term issue (the ghost of a previously owned Wal). I went back and played my Stingray last night and the playability around the first few frets is exceptionally good. If I could find something with that kind of neck profile but a much more modern sound and a compact body shape, I'd be in business.
How about a Sterling? ▪thin neck ▪ceramic pickup / modern sounding ▪smaller body
 21.
I did notice that the Les Paul wasn't mentioned in the list of designs in the quoted article. That shape must represent more of the output of copies than the rest put together by a long chalk.
Hasn't the Les Paul shape lawsuit been and gone quite a while ago, hence all the so-called "lawsuit" copies and the reason that USA ESP Eclipses have only 1 tone control and a shorter bottom horn?
 22. I'm only 5'8" and I play a 35" scale Euro 5LX with no problems with reach - guess the small body helps to keep the over all length down. I really wouldn't worry about this.
 23.
... and also being unable to wander around the stage whilst playing.
Yamaha DX100 on a strap! You might still be able to pick them up on Ebay.
